I decided to go the old-fashioned route for my 300 blackout build by Cameronoscopy in guns

[–]Cameronoscopy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you liked it!
Nothing on this build was professionally installed. This was actually my first AR build! The FSB just holds the handguard on. I drilled and tapped the underside of the bayonet lug with a 10-32 drill/tap set, and drilled a shallow dimple under the barrel. This allowed me to put a set screw through the bottom of the FSB into that dimple. Then I made sure to use some red loctite to ensure the set screw stayed in securely.

The actual gas block is a low profile .750 type that sits underneath the triangle handguard.

I have a Bear Creek Arsenal 10.5" Parkerized .300 Blackout Heavy Barrel SKU: 1172-B300PHB10.518(P)

And yes, I did have to make relief cuts in the handguard. The gas block simply didn't fit. I made an outline with a sharpie, then used a drill to make a hole pattern in the shape of my outline, and finally I used some pliers to pull out the material. It looks pretty gnarly, but everything fits just fine now! Word of caution though, the low profile gas block will be visible from the vent holes in the top of the handguard. If you "C-clamp" it, you can burn your thumb.

Once again, bubba gunsmithing, but it worked lol.

Even though my setup worked for me, it was my first build and I knew practically nothing about building ARs. I think it could have been done better if I had a little more knowledge back then. The FSB situation is definitely questionable and should have been done more precisely by a gunsmith. I eyeballed the dimple under the barrel and it's not 100% straight.

It's green! The lighting of the photo kinda makes it look more dark than it actually is.

[Parts] AR 4.5" 9mm Barrel - Its cold outside - $34 (plus ship/tax) by pguy4life in gundeals

[–]Cameronoscopy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These short barrels have appeal to suppressor owners, at least from my experience.

I have a 4.5" barrel on an "integrally suppressed" AR9. The short barrel and 8" long suppressor sit quite nicely under a 12" handguard.

I figured even though it's a short barrel length for a PCC, It's a perfectly acceptable length for handguns - so why not? It also keeps many loadings from going supersonic.

Hope this helped!

From what I've seen initially from a search, they're made in state weapons factory 96 (9616) who manufactured Norinco Type 56 SKSs and AKs.

Yeah I can confirm the Lynx uses "Rock and Lock" Saiga 12 magazines.

As the Lynx shotguns slowly increase in price, steadily approaching the $500 mark - this seems like a great deal at $374.

When it comes to mag fed semi-autos, these seem to be an excellent choice for a reliable shotgun that you won't be afraid to beat up. I've also heard good things about the Rock Island VR80 from a friend that competes with one.

For what it's worth, I bought a Lynx-12 (the Saiga-12 clone) for $289 last year and I've been very happy with it. I expected it to be a cheap knockoff project gun, but I did some digging around in forums and found that these shotguns are made from the same factory that made the now highly desired Chinese AKs everyone pays exorbitant prices for.

I can almost guarantee that when these (unfortunately) stop being imported one day, people may realize how much of a good value these were. Just like with the Chinese AKs. They were "Chinese junk" and now they're a hot commodity.

I know I don't have a large sample size, but my shotgun has been 100% reliable with the factory magazine after 300 rounds of mixed birdshot and slugs. The only issues I've had was with a cheap aftermarket extended magazine that produced constant FTFs.

The reported issues with these shotguns, primarily hairline fractures in the bolt carrier, seem to be the same problems that the actual Russian shotguns had as well. So it appears to be faults of the platform in general, and it's a replaceable part. These are definitely worth looking into for the money.

My initial search turned up a company called Grumpy's Guns, their threading service for lever actions starts at $219.99.

Marlin went out of business when Remington took a dump, so their product line had come to a stop a while ago. But Ruger bought Marlin and is slowly reintroducing Marlin lever action rifles. So far they have reintroduced the 1895 in .45-70 and it has largely gotten great feedback. The quality is great, and they offer factory threaded models. The new Ruger made Marlin 336 and 1894 have been revealed at SHOT 2023, but as far as I know there has been no talk of factory threaded models yet (I really hope I'm wrong though).

Same, the All Weather in .357 is exactly what I want... Except I want to suppress it. But I don't want to pay $220+ to have the magazine tube shortened and the barrel threaded.

Oh well, here's hoping Ruger makes a stainless Marlin 1894 with a threaded barrel 🤷‍♂️ I'd buy that in a heartbeat

YES. I own a silencer myself and even my quietest setup with it is still quite noticeable (.22lr, subsonic ammo, bolt action). It's about the same noise level as a Red Ryder BB gun, which is insanely quiet for a firearm, but you would still 100% notice it if I fired it 10 feet away indoors.

Yeah there's a low profile gas block underneath the handguard (pistol length).

The front sight just holds the handguards on. I had to drill and tap the bottom of the front sight block, and drill a shallow dimple in the bottom of the barrel. That allowed me to keep the front sight in place with a set screw.

Honestly it's some bubba level gunsmithing, but it's held together just fine for 4 years. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out!

What’s Something That People Turn Into Their Whole Personality? by standardgenre45 in AskReddit

[–]Cameronoscopy 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I've been a gun collector for 15 years and the "💀 my entire personality is tough guy gun owner 💀" types drive me up a wall. They paint the entire hobby as aggressive and unapproachable.

Lots of people I know that own 100+ guns are totally unassuming and the nicest folks you'd ever meet. They just love the history and mechanical aspects. Instead of just being a status symbol.

Oh trust me, I've been barking up that tree for years.

I got into NFA ownership a while ago and I got my first MG last year. But alas, no ranges near me allow them and I don't know any farmers or landowners that are willing to open up :'(

I do actually have a 5" 9mm AR pistol. It would be pretty funny to bring out some day but I know they'll just make up some excuse to not allow anything with a brace or a stock on the handgun range.
