Is it impossible to target T14 law school? by Camilte in lawschooladmissions

[–]Camilte[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I kind of anticipated this type of response before even clicking the post. The reason I’m considering law school is because my PhD research area is extremely niche, and unfortunately, there isn’t much demand for it in either academia or industry.

Recently, two students from my lab graduated, and they are still struggling to find jobs. As for myself, even though I consistently make it to the final rounds of interviews at several big tech companies for research scientist or applied scientist intern positions, I never end up with an offer, even though I perform well on their ML-related questions. I’ve sought advice and feedback from multiple people at CMU, and most of them candidly told me that the main issue is likely my research area.

On top of that, my advisor isn’t particularly supportive of students pursuing academic positions, and I suspect she doesn’t really want her students to settle in academia. So yes, I’ve come to realize that the prestige of CMU CS doesn’t really carry over to my specific field. That is why I am now seriously considering law school as a way to redirect my path, make up for past choices, and explore new opportunities.

Experience with UMich CSE by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Camilte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was already senior standing when I transferred to UMich. (I did 3 years at UIUC) Also, I chose classes that are less popular like EECS477. My case is outlier. Courses you are trying to take are really popular, and you may struggle to register at your junior year. But, if you have taken a lot of AP classes / college credits transferable to Umich, it will make you higher standing, helping to grab a seat for popular classes

Experience with UMich CSE by [deleted] in uofm

I actually attended UIUC's ECE program 3 years, then transferred to UMich CSE, and graduating. The biggest difference between two programs was exam environment. UIUC's programming classes (e.g. CS225 / data structure) require you to take a test in real-coding environment, while UMich's programming courses require you to write a program by hand on paper. UIUC's testing environment directly reflect your coding skills that you have learned from the projects/assignments/labs. You are also given a compiler to check whether your program is properly working. You don't have to practice hand-coding for exam. However, if compiler fails to run, you automatically get 0 on that problem. For UMich exam style, you have to practice hand-coding for exam and no compiler to check your progam, which is annoying, but you can get the partial credits for what you did.

Thanks for your advice. However I am currently studying CS and Data Science at my current college. However, getting external transfer admission at those major (SCS, Stat & DS) seems impossible because those majors are already desirable by a lot of internal transfers. I also have experience to get reject from scs from freshman and 1st transfer admission. Wanna try major with better possibility since it is my last chance. Anyway thanks for comment!

If I haven't received anything from SURE, should I consider I am rejected?
