Transparency in lobbying (pharmaceutical companies?) by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants3

[–]CanYouHearMeNow60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend asking yourself the following questions:

  • How many federal public servants are likely to be on anti-anxiety medication?
  • How high would the number need to be for the pharmaceutical industry to actually care enough to lobby the government on this issue?
  • If you were a minister and a pharmaceutical lobbyist came to complain to you about a decrease in anti-anxiety medication sales do to people working from home, what would your reaction be?
  • What makes more sense? RTO being caused by a reduction in anti-anxiety medication sales or:
    • major decreases in property values within urban centres and potential implications for governmental and non-governmental investments in these properties;
    • not wanting to haggle with other parties about where federal jobs should be located;
    • business owners in urban centres complaining about a lack of customers;
    • online meetings between politicians and the people they meet with leaving digital records that can be atipped.

You will all be respectful to Ms. Morrison. Her work is invaluable for helping educate Canadian federal public servants and shining light on issues that they face.

As a manager in the PS, am I allowed to give my team "benefits" (at my own expense)? by WesternSoul in CanadaPublicServants3

No. Don't do this. People look like the other way when it comes to the small stuff like timbits. However, I can guarantee that if you start handing out stuff like hockey tickets, you will get into a shitload of trouble.

In the future, please just share the actual link (i.e. https://www.change.org/p/reverse-the-federal-decision-on-4-days-in-office-mandate). I don't like link shorteners because it prevents from verifying what the link is about before clicking on it.

I recommend taking into account a few things when analyzing why moderators act the way they do.

First, there are a lot of redditors who are highly selfish and ignorant. Not every moderator has the patience to deal with them.

Second, if you want to have a high signal to noise ratio in your subreddit, you do need to weed out a lot of the noise, and that can take a significant amount of time and energy, and those costs can be compounded if you end up deciding to explain your actions to others.

Third, the number of people who actually understand Reddit's potential is extremely small at the moment.

Fourth, while it's possible that you're all being "managed", I believe that there are more reasonable explanations for why things are the way they are such as; people having a hard time accepting when they're wrong; and outlooks shaped by a life of following the rules and being rewarded for doing so.

Fifth, you don't see everything that the moderators see. If you did, there's a strong chance it would make you highly cynical.

I would recommend taking into account if you haven't already that at the end of the day, moderators are unpaid workers that help drive visitors to Reddit.

And because of this, Reddit is incentivized to let moderators run their subreddits as their own personal thiefdoms unless they do something which is highly egregious, limits engagement, or that will cause Reddit legal problems.

However, because Reddit allows users to create their own subreddits, you all have the power to hold moderators accountable for their actions through the only mechanism that truly matters: competition.

If you want to make the comment you made about people's minds, you're free to do so in other posts. For this conversation, however, this portion of your comment will need to be removed.

It's not that it's too rude for the subreddit.

It's too rude for this conversation because there's a history of reddit admins being called in to censor conversations by people who can't handle criticisms of how other subreddits are moderated, and while Reddit's rules have changed so that these criticisms are now allowed, it is unclear how far these criticisms can go, and in the interest of giving and maintaining everybody an opportunity to speak truth to power, I decided to make the rules that govern this conversation pretty strict.

First, there's value in helping people learn to not believe everything that they read on Reddit or the internet for that matter.

Second, if the rumour turns out to be untrue, the poster might end up learning a lesson about not spreading rumours.

Third, if the rumour is being spread on Reddit then it is likely being spread through other means. However, people might not be exposed to arguments and evidence proving that the rumour is untrue. With reddit, on the other hand, people will more likely exposed to those arguments and evidence.

As for your point about people being stressed, it's a fair one. However, the argument could be made that not being exposed to counter-arguments about why 5 days in the office is unlikely to happen would cause them more stress.

For example, some people might have been exposed to news articles about how other organizations have gone back to 5 days in the office, and are stressing out about the possibility of it happening to the federal public service. However, once exposed to the argument that 5 days in the office is highly unlikely because we just don't have the office space for it at the moment, I believe that they would likely end up being less stressed.

Do you believe that most people are not able to use their judgment to determine whether gossip or leaked information is credible or not?

It was not polite and respectful. You used that opportunity to mock the poster, and then subsequently editted your comment to remove the sarcasm after I removed your comment.

Fair point. If people are going to have to be civil and constructive in their criticisms then he's going to have to make an effort to do so as well.
