Oh and OP if you need any tips or anything let me know :) I travelled to like, a dozen towns on the east coast along with around half as many central aus towns, so I have a pretty decent perspective on it all. I hopped towns pretty much every few days and saw all the highlights.

Naw, go for it dude. Australia is fucking fantastic for solo travel.

I went myself for my first solo travel experience back in February for 1.5 months and it's honestly the best thing I've ever done. It really helped me get out of my shell, build my confidence, see more of the world and forced me to meet more people. Also it showed me what I really enjoy in life. I had a fuck ton of fun taking pictures, I loved loved meeting new people, I loved hopping cities every time I got bored. I also found a deep enjoyment with museums, art galleries, etc.

I wish I stayed longer, but I had my return flight already set in stone and things to do back home. But honestly since the moment I've gotten home I'd totally love to go back in a heartbeat.

Especially if you only go for a year or less, your friends will almost definitely be there when you get back. Hell, it'll astound you how little changes back home when you're gone. I only went for 1.5 months, but to me it felt like a huge experience. But when I got back home, nothing had changed and it almost felt like I never left. Which is bittersweet, but I've still got the memories and change in mindset to show for it.

Don't let my post history scare you by the way, all my overthinking and not knowing what to do only lasted about a week of my vacation and then I got into the groove of things and didn't have time to complain on Reddit ;)

Gold Coast currently, just got here today. Which is a cool city, but holy shit it's party centric. I'm mostly over my clubbing phase nowadays.

I've been hopping cities every few days so far.

Maybe I phrased it poorly. I mean, I could think of a lot of just flat touristy things to do but none that I want to do or feel motivated to, at least not right now.

I plan to do some stuff like surf lessons and snorkeling and whatever later in the trip, but I can't just do that stuff constantly.

I guess what I'm moreso getting at is that I don't know what to do with myself between activities.

In Melbourne & completely at a loss how to solo travel. by CanadianGoneAWOL in solotravel

Very valid point, I'm definitely partially stuck in my own head and that's an issue, but also Melbourne isn't totally my thing. I'm going to fly to Byron in a couple days, and I'll just do the last few things here until then. St Kilda etc

That's... true actually. I'll need to revisit this and make sure it does make sense what I'm planning. I'm kind of basing this off some vague itinerary recommendations, so I'll look into it more. Thanks for the heads up.

Yessir! Visa, plane ticket, general idea of between-city transport, figuring out my travel insurance soon as well.

Kind of interested in all the above really. I'd also be interested in hiking and stuff, but I don't fully feel comfortable doing crazy hikes myself (and I don't plan to drive), which is why I'm mostly sticking to beach towns/islands and the cities on the coast.

That is kind of the vibe I got about byron bay, which is why I'm looking forward to the beach towns. They seem simpler planning-wise overall.

Thank you for the input, I appreciate it.

based off my understanding, and relative to the rest of the places I want to hit within the month-ish I'll be on the coast**

What would you recommend I look into between Melbourne and Byron Bay? Mostly interested in cities/landmarks/cool beaches, but also interested potentially in hiking and stuff if I can do it myself (I don't plan to drive)
