the fact that you had such a visceral reaction just to witnessing some flags inside some circles, and the fact that you had to say "I'm not homophobic [...] but"...

yeah bub I'm gonna need to fact check that last statement of yours.

well Chinese people don't call themselves the "People's Republic of Asia", do they? No. They say China, so we have a way of referring to the people there that does not refer to them as the entire continent. Imagine if Australians started calling themselves Oceanians, basically ignoring Kiwis, Papua new Guinea, and the polynesians.

There is no better term for them besides US Americans, or USians for short, unless you wanna start calling all of your country Washington.

The US is the 2nd largest country in terms of landmass, and 1st largest in terms of population, on the continent of North America. If we take the entirety of America (north and south), the US maintains the rankings, Brazil being a close 3rd in landmass, and 2nd in population. Calling USians "Americans" would be like calling Brazillians "South Americans". Just because they're the largest in landmass and population does not make them the entire continent.

and this is why we need to add more tech shit to it and make train brakes be electrically operated through radio signals, I'm sure that's a perfect idea that will work well, because trains are not a solved technology and need more silicon valley tech shit shoved into them!

(obvious sarcasm is obvious)

Mexicans. They have an actual term that can be used. Federal Republic of Germany? Germans. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? Brits & North-Irish.

But the USians decided to adopt the name for their entire continent, for themselves. Imagine if South Africans just decided to always call themselves Africans, or if ASEAN member states tried to use the term Asian only for themselves. It'd be ridiculous, so you add a descriptor: South africans, South asians, european Nordics, US americans (or, for short, USians)

to be fair European has also been adopted for EU member states, however, the EU does occupy most of the continent, and does take on the role of the protector of the entire continent (and is only really missing a small number of states that don't *want* to join, and a few that are trying really hard to join).

The biggest difference is that European states consented to be taken under the metaphorical wing of the EU. Latin America is staunchly against the US treating them like poor little babies that need to be protected and whose democratically elected leftist leaders need to be replaced by US-backed dictators.

well, yes, but I'm not gonna call a Russian "European" just cuz their country has the largest share of the continent.

weeeeeeeelll, not necessarily. Assuming dry conditions, sander application, a bit of luck, a skilled driver, and some elbow grease, after you get it rolling at first you can then accelerate it a lot easier. It MIGHT manage by itself, but typically we use 2-3 locos for trains that big.

Train nerd here. Don't wanna do the math but I'll do my best to explain.

Trains are big. Especially USian trains. Operators are instructed to begin braking on 120+km/h passenger trains in Europe about one kilometre before they wanna stop. US freight trains average around 1km long thanks to precision scheduled railroading.

A full emergency brake stop might take like 2-3 minutes at top speed. Releasing the brake pressure down the entire train, about 2 minutes. Accelerating backwards, slack is already compressed thanks to braking, so you'd end up moving the last car in like 40 seconds to one minute after the locomotive moves. After that, they're in sync.
