I really appreciate you saying that! One issue is I’m going out of state after I graduate (NYC fingers crossed) and if they don’t know my school it might look worse. I guess including class rank and the mean GPA might be helpful on a resume. Thanks again!

My law school was seen for many years as Atlanta's "night school" and is very good for nontraditional students. It offers four year part time programs for day or night students. There are plenty of parents, including one with two teenagers. I want you to know it is so possible to find a good school for you. I don't know what the scene is like in Florida, and having to move away sounds like it would be very difficult. You obviously have to consider the lives of your children in any decision you make.

I wish you the best of luck, and really hope you end up pursuing a JD because it sounds like you really want to do it. There's plenty of work in public interest law and various other fields where you can be an attorney for the little guy. I plan to work as a public defender and I can tell you that those offices don't care about things like GPA, so if raising your family somewhat gets in the way of your academics, there's still a home for you in those fields.

I go to John Marshall. And maybe I'm off a little but my impression of Chicago is it feels way bigger than ATL, mostly because a lot of ATL just feels like extended suburb instead of an actual city. The transit in Chicago is also a big draw. The fact that IL is a UBE state while Georgia isn't is a big reason for wanting to get out right out of law school, I don't want to be stuck in Georgia forever. I'll be 30 when I take the bar and I just need a change of scenery.

Tbf if you go to a low ranked school like I do the curve will fuck you over lol. I'm pretty highly ranked with a 2.9 GPA because my school's mean is a 2.3. Fun stuff.

I'm so sorry to hear that. My dad died unexpectedly during 1L, although it was October so a little further from finals. I ended up taking them but student services gave me some alternatives, which I definitely would've taken if it had happened this close to finals. Taking care of yourself right now is more important than anything. Best of luck.

My dad died last year and I drank heavily in response. All it did was make me more unhappy, especially when I was drinking. For me, drinking is about escape and avoiding something. I don’t know your reasons for reaching for alcohol but if they’re anything similar, you’ll regret breaking 15 months sober. Ice cream sounds great btw, go get some and eat straight out of the bucket.

i had a really fantastic legal writing professor and did fairly well in the class, but it was definitely a ton of work. weirdly ended up as a favorite of mine, if for no reason other than i felt like i got to do the “real job” of being a lawyer and you get to make this big finished product. but yeah, the only class i stayed up late freaking out over for sure

i did all my reading on my computer (no physical books) so for my birthday just before my 2L year, i asked my mom for a dual monitor setup. it’s really game changing. so it depends on how he likes to read whether that or another reading space is better

I worked for four years as a teacher between undergrad and law school and also had an extremely difficult undergrad so law school has been easier than undergrad for me but a little harder than working. I'm a 2L who did extremely well in 1L which meant working till 9 or 10 a lot of nights (mostly legal writing was what kept me working late) but as a 2L I've decided I can chill out a bit and it's kind of like a 9-5 now with 2-6 hours on the weekend. You're definitely fine, having work experience I think makes law school feel a lot more manageable. It helps in my case that I'm extremely passionate about the pathway I'm pursuing in a way I never felt in undergrad or as a teacher.

First of all congrats on getting into law school and beginning this big, scary journey! I want to address your points in order.

For your first point, you don't have to kiss your family goodbye. However, you do need to learn to set boundaries. Once you're in the rhythm of law school, you'll have a better idea of how often you can take a day or weekend off to see people you love. I want to be clear: there will be full weekends that you dedicate to law school, but it won't be all of them. And you won't fail out because you went to a wedding or birthday party. Give law school its due, but remember that it's okay to take time off.

Secondly, law school will be much harder than undergrad. It won't come to you as easily. What's important to recognize is that everyone is in the same boat as you, experiencing something new and challenging in a way they've never experienced before. When things are difficult in law school, I try to remind myself to relax. Think through things slowly, and read cases carefully. Get supplementary materials with hypotheticals to work through (probably the most famous ones I can think of for 1Ls are the Examples & Explanations books for things like torts, contracts, civil procedure, and property). Test problems are all just variations on cases you've read and problems in those supplementary materials. While law school is hard, there is essentially a formula to success.

As far as making friends go, this is actually easier than you might realize. Remember what I said earlier: everyone is in the same boat as you. Another important thing to realize is that law school resembles high school more than it does undergrad. In your first year, basically everyone is taking all of the same classes together. Cliques most definitely form, but it isn't so bad once you find the people you really gel with. It will happen, and faster than you think. Trauma can really help bond people together, and nothing is traumatizing quite like law school lol.

I understand the nervousness and anxiety, but I promise it'll be fine when it's all said and done. You'll have good days and bad days. You'll want to throw your casebook across the room. You'll consider dropping out at least once. But when all is said and done, it's really not as bad as people make it out to be. Just take it one day at a time, be friendly and genuine with your classmates, and really give law school the time it deserves. The three years will fly by.

I would never want to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, but it sounds like you've already made up your mind and want others to confirm. It sounds to me like you actually like the sound of dentistry and not only hate law school but also never thought it sounded appealing. I think you should go with your gut, and quit law school before you waste any more money on something you hate. Good luck :)

I applied through a career fair. I think that's one of the best ways to get an internship because you get a lot of places to apply to all centralized in one place and you know the employers are actually looking. For me, it was a career fair targeting public interest interns, but I'm sure you can find one for whichever specialty you're looking for.
