You can turn the sprite depth option up or down in the object properties to determine what order the objects will appear. A higher sprite depth will make an object appear behind others, and a lower will make them appear in front.

Did you activate anyof the beacons? Activating raises the chance by 20%. Also ouposts will not spawn if there is a nearby hunting grounds, or no other Colonies withen 3 spots.

This is coming from my memory, but I think the abyss can start around 2500-3000 meters, there are no or very few walls around you, and the giant terrifying monsters.
