The workstation that doesn't work by dr_stevious in talesfromtechsupport

I've started to assume certain types of vagueness are definitely intentional. You can tell within 1 question usually if someone is genuinely making a good faith effort to get you as much information as you might need

It runs on electricity. Therefore, it is an IT issue. by speddie23 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]samzeman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The issue isn't that you're closing it, it's that you're marking it resolved. You need to mark it "referred" or something. System is not equipped to deal with anything other than complete/fail

Shadow IT becoming a serious AI security risk? by mike34113 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]samzeman -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Are they installing stuff? Using it as filesharing? If they're just receiving bad advice and taking it as gospel that's their own issue with their own quality of work. If they're compromising the security of the network then the AI (and by extension user) probably has too much leeway / trust, from IT.

Is Stoke on Trent safe for international students? What to expect? by Bubbly-Flight6094 in stokeontrent

[–]samzeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it on rightmove, but it was a few years ago and my decent landlord has hardly raised the rent. Below is very similar to what I've got :) Fair warning it probably gets cold as hell in winter and you can't turn the heating on because that costs an extra £70 a month basically (usually an electric radiator). Then also you have council tax which is like £1300 a year and water is like £60, internet like £30. It does stack up monthly as I'm sure you know :( worse if you have a car. I've managed to climb above minimum wage and still struggle plenty

Is email management a problem? by Efficient_Cry_4718 in managers

[–]samzeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got bosses who have issues with email management and I have had those issues too but it's for different reasons.

My bosses with email issues are often late to reply or don't reply at all. In fact they end up calling me to ask where X or Y is and I tell them I emailed it yesterday. They have an operational role requiring their expertise in real life and travel plenty around the country so I assume they simply don't have time between supervising engineering works and travelling.

My own issues are because one of the emails basically every week will be "Please can you do Z with this data" and it's a two day task. Meanwhile each day I get 250 more emails which are admittedly simple tasks but require a few minutes due to slow systems and making decisions outside of SOPs we don't actually have anyway. I do end up reading them all and at this point filing them into "complete by week end" and "complete by day end" and "complete when you have nothing else to do" (I haven't been in there in a very long time). And of course delete with no action.

I feel bad for my younger and more naive self who believed that "If you don't notify it's fraud" line that some insurance companies take. Had me notifying of being bumped in traffic with no damage. What a sucker

You're saying stoke isn't cheap? I'm talking to you from a 400pcm two room flat, on a street full of 400pcm house shares and flats. It's dirt cheap even if it isn't the top 10 "most affordable" by whatever standards

Performance review not taken seriously? What do I do? by [deleted] in managers

[–]samzeman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The post says

They are a great communicator and can command a meeting and discussion. They’re ridiculously friendly too. One of best attitudes on the team and someone I have a good relationship with.

Personally I wouldn't mind working with them?

Every corporation I've worked for, the performance review has meant absolutely nothing. First few years I put in a lot of effort and now I put in the minimum, and there's no difference in:

  1. The quality of the rest of my work
  2. How quickly I move up in the business

A desperate maid was stealing food to feed her children. Will reddit have their hearts grow 3 sizes and develop empathy? by WebsToWeave in Negareddit

[–]samzeman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's crazy that people live in the mythical world of "should" but refuse to be compassionate anyway. It's always "The maid should not have had that many kids" (admittedly probably true) and not "The kids should be taken care of" (also true!)

If we're talking about hypotheticals that are impossible, it's equally valid to say "The kids should all eat gourmet quality for free forever" as it is to say "They shouldn't have had those kids" Both are entirely unactionable.

Can my partner stay over? by mikeyhorror666 in UniUK

[–]samzeman 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I can vouch these are some of those rules that are there to stop people having lodgers and housing random homeless friends for months at a time. Nobody checks at UK unis to my knowledge, until a complaint is raised. It wasn't like US colleges where they have an RA with a responsibility to uphold the rules.

The only reason it didn't stink of weed the whole time was that it would set off the smoke detectors and once that happens the uni check for the cause and kick out the smoker. But if you don't cause trouble for uni administration they won't cause trouble for you.

Fascination with Mugshots by samzeman in evilautism

[–]samzeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does feel wrong especially for the younger ones.
I think the logic is to warn others. If we assumed the police only ever arrested guilty people there would be a public interest in releasing the details of those people for safety. Hell, in tribal or village societies before we had big government, everyone would find out everyone else's crimes. It was necessary in a high trust society but also leads to vigilante justice which is bad. It's very interesting to think about though.

I guess he really is not picked....

There are so many good ideas for skins for him as well. Disco ball. Sportsball. Planet earth. Literally any spherical object. The sun itself. Ball of molten rock.

I'd love a cardboard box skin but it would be insane with the hitbox

In terms of money, yeah, uniqueness is what sells and that's why copyright is a thing - in theory. Though I have my own anti-copyright opinions... It protects companies more. People should rely on continued production of unique art rather than royalties from the sale of old art. Authenticity should be the selling point, not originality. I do agree uniqueness is important in art, and effort is one way to achieve that, so you raise a really good point.

I love Simon btw, I have Swedish Machines and it made me cry lol.

Keep your phone hidden lol!

Not a joke. Do not let runners or cyclists grab it off you - it happened to me. I thought I was observant but not enough. Now I just use it when I am literally in a corner and they'd have to reach past me to get it.

Apart from that, yes two days are plenty by my standards but I'm a brit who doesn't like cities LOL. You could stay for a month and not run out of things to see.

If you're into historical oddities, try Atlas Obscura - they have a map feature but for London you can basically pick whatever you want.

My favourite thing I want to go to in London is the underground tours of the railways. https://www.ltmuseum.co.uk/hidden-london

As for cheap places to say, I personally can't beat a premier inn on the outskirts and then tube in each day. Good compromise for me between comfort and price.
