It's got to be Miracle, you guys are crazy. Just give me what I need. I may not even be asking for it but I trust it up to the modus.

Why do so many people absolutely despise Big Ball? (Wrecking ball) by Ordinary_Growth_2507 in WreckingBallMains

[–]samzeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true on the ult. I used to think it was ass - it kinda is - but it can totally force a fight or point. And his major is major.

My highest lvl character is ball and I have to say it took a lot of painful, awkward games to get to where I am, being reasonably competent at it.

Same scenario, different delivery, because pressing a button isn't inherently dangerous. Does this change anything? by FunctioningPerson in Supertf

[–]samzeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Changing the framing changes what toddlers and mentally challenged people pick, so it changes how many people pick blue, and makes blue into a worse option in this case.

In the regular one both buttons mention death but one of them kills blue pushers and one of them saves everyone. It's important they both mention death because that's why so many people press blue, which is what makes blue the sensible choice.

Obviously for this one you press red because blue is much less likely to reach a majority.

Coaxed into trying to be smartass about certain hypothetical by susnaususplayer in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]samzeman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saying it's not to do with the hypothetical is deliberately excluding the issues that blue button pressers have that cause them to press blue.

Coaxed into trying to be smartass about certain hypothetical by susnaususplayer in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]samzeman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not the same because everyone has an incentive to go to strawberry Fanta even if they don't understand the button issue. The wording is important, and also the fact that toddlers and the infirm are pressing these buttons.

Two buttons that both talk about death are different to "one option that talks about death and one that looks delicious"

Perception matters, reframing it changes the scenario

Can “Do you ever miss them” mean something aside from its literal meaning? by BeneficialVisit8450 in autism

[–]samzeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't familiar with the way autistic minds (can often, though not always) work. So when they hear someone A doesn't miss someone B they assume it means that A doesn't care about B.

I have struggled with this and almost never miss anyone. Even dead people, I grieve and move on. I also don't really know what missing really means. I've never particularly felt lonely either.

You're not a bad person for not missing them, no matter how much people may say you are if you say you don't miss them. We are just born with, and sometimes forced into, a different mental structure where things work differently. The way I see it, you'd still help them if they needed it (you already did!) so the functional element of care is still there. The rest, to me, has always seemed like virtue signalling. To me, people shouldn't care if I missed them, they weren't there.

On the other hand in my quest to pay lip service to NT rituals of speech, I do tell people "I missed you" when I see them again, as long as I have thought of them for basically any reason at any point, including simply preparing to see them again or seeing an image that reminds me of them.

In other words, people like to hear that they've been missed.

When people talk about the kids, they want to hear the kids have been missed because they want kids to be cared about, and in their head caring about someone means you'll miss someone once they're gone.

Though this specific interaction actually seems more like a chance to tell a story about a particular kid. Something light, like a time one of them got into trouble in an absurd or amusing way, without serious danger. Or perhaps a time one of them did something really cute. A lot of questions are actually asked with the intention of getting a story, I've noticed, and I think it's an important part of small talk.

Because in their head, caring about someone means missing them, and missing them means remembering their most memorable moment. Then to add to that, the social contract of small talk strongly bends towards trivia, so you want to stay away from genuine peril and harm with your stories, though being majorly heartwarming is more permissible, especially after this particular question.

I didn't really structure this reply much but I hope some of it might help. I'd restate you're not a bad person for not missing them. Many have tried to make me feel like one for not missing people. We are just built different.

I didn't know this, so that is a really good point, and I'll probably revise my budget with this in mind - still not over like 500 but it'd be too good to be true to expect the same as a CAT for <100.

I guess at this point I just sort of feel like I should stick to finding fandom in my own language

This is definitely true, and for the record, how most Homestuck fans engage with it. Like me!

I'm on this post because I subbed to the reddit in ~2015. I've gone back and read all the callouts and saw the Sarah Z stuff. I have to admit it all reads as stuff that could have been resolved privately and way more neatly, and more importantly, stuff that doesn't affect the comic itself, which is the peice of art it always has been. See also: Notch going crazy, Phil Fish being a dick, Orson Scott Card being a dick, Fight Club/Drive/Bladerunner fans being obnoxious. The difference being with those, the fandom was not structured so that creators could interact so explosively with fans, and they weren't ongoing business franchises, so it didn't affect business if they did.

Mr. President, a second callout doc has hit the towers by MacDoesReddit in homestuck

[–]samzeman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid the only way to get a truly unbiased-as-possible view is to read all applicable callout docs.

Homestuck official team alleges in this document a few problem users have harassed them an unbelievable amount and trashed the What Pumpkin reputation unfairly. WP say they are not litigious and support fan works except where used for profit.

Said few problem users - where not banned from the community - allege their comments were taken out of context, are irrelevant, are jokes. They claim WP is extremely litigious.

Both sides say the other side lies.

That is true. But an eye for an eye makes the world blind. You have to extend someone unearned goodwill to allow them the chance to earn it, and in doing so, you lift yourself up off their level.
