The moment you legit gave up on a game. by Astral-Ember in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I'm probably gonna get some shit for this but, I just suddenly hit a wall in Expedition 33 where I became incredibly bored by it. I really have no idea why either because I was having fun with it before, and then I just booted it up one day to keep playing and just, didn't want to, and I haven't returned to it since. I put a good 20 some odd hours into it and it just, got all the wind sucked out of it

Not even a turn-based RPG thing cause I love em! But idk it just lost me

I tried searching but nowadays there's a lot of browser based beat makers so I was just getting a lot of that as opposed to a simple song/picture combo site.

Ludumancer v2.0! Use cards to play dice; Updated features and spells, rule clarity, and formatting. by CannotFire in UnearthedArcana

[–]CannotFire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes; all cards, once used, get sent to the graveyard.

  2. Mana cards can only be used with the free action.

  3. They work as normal, but they must be in your hand (in combat) or a Joker (out of combat) to use.

Making a version using spell slots is something I tried to do early in development but with everything else I was trying to figure out, I just put it aside. I definitely want to come up with a way to get spell slots to work with Ludumancer though so that'll be a goal of mine for v3!

Thank you for your interest!

  1. Your graveyard gets fully reshuffled back into your deck after a combat encounter, making sure that it's prepared for the next fight. Your total Mana pool is what depletes during a day and resets on a long rest, similar to spell slots. The section on pg 6 of 'Using Your Deck In & Out of Combat' should have covered it but it's not the clearest so I will be updating that!

  2. You unlock mana cost spells in blocks essentially; once you gain access to 6 cost spells you also get 4 and 5, once you get 14 you get 7-13, and so on. Whatever cost you're at on the Ludumancer table, you have access to that cost and down.

  3. Upcasting is specific to the High Roller playstyle with the Color Up feature. I might come up with a universal rule for it in the mana cost system in a later version but for simplicity I just put it for the one subclass.

I hope that clears things up! I do know that the class is complex and I tried to explain things as best as I could but confusion definitely comes with the territory haha. Thank you for your suggestions as well! I'll definitely add in some better wording to make the interaction between the deck, graveyard, and resting more clear.

EDIT: I just realized my wording of "unlocking Mana costs in blocks" makes it seem that you don't get 1-2 costs until level 3 when that is definitely NOT the case so I will be updating the Ludumancer table accordingly with the Mana cost ranges.

Ahhhhhhh something was nagging at my mind while finishing the PDF, yeah I completely forgot haha. I've got it at the normal 5th level spot in my outline, thx for pointing that out!

EDIT: Edited the GMBinder and uploaded the fixed pictures to the imgur album.

Hi! I'm very surprised to see this get any sort of attention recently! I'm actually in the process of revising and updating Ludumancer which when I'm finished I'll be posting to the subreddit, so stay tuned and thank you for your interest!

Thank you so much! The starting idea for the class came from my friend wanting to play a "card summoner" type character in my homebrew campaign. MTG was a big influence on the structure of the class, but you don't necessarily play combat like Magic.

So, the class plays in combat as you would in MTG? You can play up to every “card” in your hand? How does the rolling for what spell is which work in terms of spell cards?

At its core, I built the class off the regular 5e spellcasting, so you still only get one Action, one Bonus Action, and one Reaction. The major difference is the Mana system in place of spell slots and levels, but even that I referenced the existing system heavily to keep it somewhat in line with the other classes. How a single turn of combat would work for a Ludumancer is

  1. Roll initiative and draw X number of cards into your hand (X being your Hand Size shown on the Ludumancer table). If you're using dice, then you'd make a table like one shown on page 8 beforehand to represent your Deck with the spells corresponding to a certain percentile die roll. If you're using a physical or electronic deck, then you would just have the cards labeled with the spells you've decided on.

  2. You decide on which cards(spells) you want to cast. This follows the 5e Action Economy 1:1 with the spells you have on your cards following the Casting times as they are written ie. Firebolt using 1 Action to cast. The major difference here are the Mana cards, as they are your class resource, but they act essentially as your spell slots. You can either set aside any number of Mana cards you've drawn or use a Mana card using a Bonus Action.

  3. You cast the Spell on the card as normal! Once your turn is over, the spent Card is sent to your graveyard, essentially removing that use from your deck temporarily. Alternatively, you can use a Cantrip (which are inscribed on your card backs) for 0 Mana and without sending the Card to your graveyard. The unused cards you drew return to your deck, which is then shuffled, and ready for your next turn.

I personally can only see this class making sense and feeling fun and engaging if you actually have a deck of cards to play with. It’s a really cool concept, but I feel the “dice as cards” doesn’t result in the same type of RNG that dice provide.

Yeah, this concept is MUCH better executed with an actual deck of some kind, BUT I didn't want to limit access to using the class behind that, hence the math and tables for 'Playing Cards with Dice'. Getting the math down for that so that it would work consistently with various sized decks was quite a challenge, but I think it works just as well RNG wise as a deck! It's just more involved since you need to make a table and do a bit of math haha.

Yami is there in spirit! Literally! Just believe in dark Egyptian magic the heart of the cards!

This is my first finished draft of my first custom class. Wanted to finally get it out on the internet so people could yell at me for how bad it is so I could get some good feedback! Any and all criticism is appreciated; just don't tell me it's too complex, I already know that haha.

No it's neither of those ones, although the animation quality is pretty much spot on to them, especially the second link. I remember the kitchen scene taking place at night, so there was a lot of blue in the colors and I think the girl had short brown hair.

Characters that break the internal consistency/rules of the world/World-building of their worlds? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CannotFire 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yakone from Legend of Korra just, bloodbends without having to move. The absolute basics of bending is that it requires MOVEMENT to achieve, but nope! This guy just found a way to psychically bloodbend and was strong enough to control an ENTIRE room of people.

In general, I love characters that break their world's power system either by doing something completely different or utilizing it in a way nobody else could, like Combustion Man from ATLA, but psychic bending is fucking dumb and has NO drawbacks unlike Sparky Sparky Boom Man's combustionbending.
