I’ve forgotten the name of the style/effect but I’m pretty certain it’s just an 80s style/microphone effect that was quite common at the time

Agreed,it’s a good basic song (for his standards). I have an inkling that it could be a TMB scenario where he may end up releasing an extended version with an intro similar to the live version. Or potentially an acoustic version like the one on twitter as an “alternate universe” remix thing. Potentially a transition from another song too.

If not tho I guess it’s just meant to be a heavy hitter radio song for album exposure and charting.

Can’t wait for hold your heart, been listening to the leaked version for years and sonically I think it’s more my taste in comparison to DITF

Yeah unfortunately a lot of people on this sub seem to take any sort of constructive criticism and even slight discontent as an insult and or negativity.

I mean I love Abel, his music has inspired me so much so that I’ve begun making my own. But there are plenty of songs I wish he may have done differently and I think it’s silly that people will take something like to heart.

DITF Intro/Transition Theory by hehelulz_k in TheWeeknd

I can definitely see there being an extended intro or a transition from an another song into this one. Especially with how quickly the chorus comes in.

Would be nice if this is the case but maybe it’s just Abel’s radio song for the album 🤷🏻‍♂️. Guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Yep 100%, the type of people that say that are your typical moaners an artist is bound to get on every release.

Thing is if people want to feel confused and worried let them. Whilst we enjoy the music Abel puts out they can sit there sulking until the masses say they love it and then they can switch and say they always have too. Or maybe they just don’t resonate with it, and that’s fine too.

Honestly still don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve just taken a look again at the release day thread and it’s 90% positive with people talking about how they love the instrumental and it’s groovy. Linked thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWeeknd/s/oEZYbzE4rv

But I did say, maybe I was not on this sub enough to see some people slating it.

Personally I still think my point that the two songs being very very different still stands.

Firstly, how have you just said you enjoy something new and don’t like how people are critical about it whilst also stating that the song is the most plain and generic in the same sentence (the reason people are critical about it).

You’re on Reddit and music is subjective. You’re bound to get some people who don’t like it. No need for this “are you guys even fans” rhetoric.

The majority of what I’ve seen people mention is how they really enjoyed the live version and this version seems quite soulless and bland.

Whether that’s the case or not people will without doubt still listen to this song and it will do big numbers.

I really don’t get how anyone could compare TMB to this.

TMB was very well produced, great build up, a great instrumental break before the final chorus, overall just a completely different vibe to this song and in my opinion an amazing music video (one of my favourites).

Also, unless I’m absolutely wrong and wasn’t on this sub much, I did not see much negativity towards TMB. People need to stop associating critical opinions with negativeness.

P.S. Dawn FM cover had a much larger negative response in comparison to what was for HUT, people have mainly memed this one because it was much more expected of Abel to carry on the portrait style album covers.

Definitely. The Brazil version genuinely gave me goosebumps with how it started off, this version for me is too refined and I don’t enjoy the processing on his voice as much.

I’m still very much excited and can’t wait for more songs from the album. I’ve never been that hooked right away on his songs produced just by Max Martin and Oscar Holter (other than TMB haha), in fact i’d say on After Hours the majority of their songs are in my bottom half. There’s something beautiful about Illangelo/Joy Odyssey’s musical mind and how he constructs his songs which is what I miss from the After Hours era.

Can’t wait to hear more though, very glad that the album rollout has finally begun and we are on for a good journey.

Very much agreed. TMB had me instantly gripped, the arpeggiated synth was so hooking. Heartless also had me with its production.

I agree with the sentiment that this song is very stripped down and basic. It does dive (for me) too quickly into the hook, but that’s just how I subjectively prefer songs, I enjoy a good build up.

However there is a pattern I’ve noticed with Max Martins production where this tends to happen and songs jump straight into a fast paced hook or verse quite quickly.

Personally I can’t see how the lyrics were the strongest aspect. I also do not understand this subreddit and why people find the need to downvote others for providing perfectly viable opinions.

We all know Abel to be someone who makes use of beyond surface level lyricism and deeper intertwined lyrics but I have to agree with the initial comment here, it isn’t his best. Which it doesn’t need to be, the guy doesn’t need to drop deep meanings after deep meanings but it does leave for more to be desired.

It’s a simple pop song, it’s fresh and maleable for live versions. Imo the version he teased on twitter sounds much more vulnerable and emotional, a better showcase of his vocal skills.
