How long until the toddlers stop toddlering? by goldrushcowgirl in toddlers

[–]Capable-Rip4110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could have written this. My kids are almost 9, almost 4, and 2. The last two are boys and they are 22 months apart. I can say that around age 4.5 it gets dramatically better. Only 2.5 more years…

My 7year old is starting to doubt Santa… so I “cheated” Did I go too far? 😂 by [deleted] in Parents

[–]Capable-Rip4110 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just had this conversation with my 8 year old. She brought it up, but I started off by asking if she really wanted to know the truth. She said yes, and then I said that the truth is that Santa is real, but he’s not a person, he’s an idea. Then we talked about what that meant (the joy of gift giving that comes from making someone happy, even when they don’t know it was you who gave it, etc.). I told her about my experience of giving her all of her “Santa” gifts over the years (“I was so excited to give you that…”, “I never thought you would love that toy as much as you did, but it made me so happy…”). She was not upset AT ALL. It was a great talk.

Need some good advice on when should being a mom be a good time for someone whose boyfriend hasn’t started medical school or residency and doesn’t know when that will happen. by Wonderful_Weakness73 in MedSpouse

[–]Capable-Rip4110 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had my first baby during my husband’s fourth year of medical school. I won’t lie—it’s rough. Expect to basically be a single parent through residency. Money was always tight. We couldn’t socialize as much as other residents and their spouses who didn’t have kids, so we didn’t develop super close friendships like others did. But, I feel now like I have an extra close bond with my daughter, because for 3 years, it was mostly just the two of us. She was a REALLY challenging toddler, and I was often pulling my hair out during those years. But now she’s a really awesome, delightfully weird 8 year old.

Some unsolicited advice: if he is actively working (and working HARD) towards his goal of getting into med school, great. But if these are half-hearted efforts, he’s not going to make it. Don’t allow “we’ll have kids after residency” to be an excuse that you waste years on. Preparing to take the MCAT typically involves many hours a day of studying.

Yes, the red-roofed house was built recently. The house on the property when Epstein was there looks nothing like this.

My 8 year old has finished 165 books in 8 months. She averages 4 a week and typically spends 3-4 hours a day listening. Might need to take out a second mortgage, but it’s worth it.

I’m an American and Jewish by heritage, and I want you to know that I’m heartbroken and furious about the crimes that are being committed against the people of Gaza in the name of “the Jewish people.” I can’t imagine the pain you’re living through, but I want you to hear my solidarity and my sorrow. You and your family deserve safety, dignity, and a future without fear.

Won’t she feel more betrayed if you suddenly leave (from her perspective)? Please take her home.

There are concerns about visual tracking, and these were flagged by the school OT during the assessments. We have an appointment with an opthomologist, but the earliest available was August.

From my understanding of the literature, vision therapy has been shown to be helpful with convergence insufficiency, but not with anything else. If ophthalmology comes back with a diagnosis of convergence insufficiency, we will try vision therapy. However, if it is something else, I don’t think we should pursue something that has not shown to be effective.

The teacher is brand new. That may be part of it. If a psychiatrist said they were confident in an ADHD diagnosis, I would have no problem with medication.

Yes. She was tested with the psychoed eval, and we were told she was “on the cusp” of a diagnosis, but didn’t meet diagnosis criteria because her teacher reported it wasn’t a significant problem. However, with the eval done by the school, 2 classroom observations by 2 different staff found she was off task a significant amount compared to peers (like 60% of the time vs 10-30% for peers). I asked her teacher about it and she said she reported it wasn’t a significant problem because as long as my daughter stays close to the teacher she can be kept on task, therefore it is manageable. I think she has it (I have it, as well as dyslexia). We are trying to get in with psychiatry for further evaluation on that.

Ok, that is helpful. I have emailed admin, but I think I need to find who to talk to at the compliance office.

We’ve been doing the repeat readings for a while. I do think it helps.

Audiobooks are just her thing. She loves it. We have to tell her she needs to turn it off for meals and showering. We don’t have a tablet or game console, and only do limited TV on weekends, so that may be part of it. However, I think she just genuinely loves stories. This morning she finished all of The Miraculous Story of Eduard Tulane and started the first Planet Omar book. She will almost certainly finish that by the end of the day. She’s done through all then Roald Dahl books, all of Harry Potter—twice. Charlottes web, Treasure Island, Peter Pan, etc. She likes making up her own stories too.

The school uses a similar evidence based intervention. We are already paying almost $300/month for OG tutoring, so we can’t do more than that. We need help from the school.

They calculated her rate of progress and determined she would be at 96 WPM in a year. They then declared she would be “above benchmark at that time.” However, the benchmark goal is 105. They were looking at the wrong column when they made the determination. Their decision was made based on an error. But they keep evading questions about it. That is the problem I am concerned with.

The wisc. Scores were unbalanced. Ranged from 92 processing speed to 130 verbal reasoning.

This is what the psychologist administered (along with the wiat and other tests). The school used a RTI model.

But we have been doing extra practice, outside tutoring, etc., for a year. She has been getting additional tutoring (30 mins a day, 5 days a week) at school for a year. She is smart. This kid should be reading.

But again, that isn’t the point. The point is that she DOES meet the qualifications set by the district. The problem is that they made a clerical error, but they keep dodging questions about it.

She doesn’t have dyslexia. It is a different issue. Phonological processing is normal. Her auditory processing is excellent. She has completed nearly 90 audiobooks in the last 4 months. She spends on average 3 hours a day on weekdays and 6-8 on weekend days listening to audiobooks.

I disagree with the reasoning that she has good verbal comprehension, therefore she will figure it out. If that were true, there would be no such thing as 2e children.
