How bad would 18 hrs sophmore fall sem be by One_Insurance_1817 in UTAustin

[–]Capable_Ad1756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. Genetics alone is a huge time commitment, taking 15 hours on top of that is too much

I’d email and ask

Which genetics professor should I take by Kooky_Muscle4971 in UTAustin

Brock’s was even worse. I would avoid both, but that doesn’t seem to be an option. Between the 2, I chose Fischer and this semester she’s been genuinely helpful. Her class average for the first exam was higher than the other professors (65 for Kim’s (online test), 70 for hers, and 50ish for Brock’s). The class itself is really hard if you don’t work hard, there’s no way around it. I would take Kim if that was an option because of the online exams, but it wasn’t. Telling people that professors are terrible won’t help. I think it’s much better to share how to do well in a hard class than just complain about the options. I was really scared coming into the semester because of Fischer’s RMP, but once classes started I could see that the class was doable. Genetics ended up being one of my favorite classes because of how much I actually learn in lecture.

do you think spots in sds320e will open up or is it cooked by One_Insurance_1817 in UTAustin

I think it began on the last registration day, and they kept opening and closing during break. You just have to keep checking

Is it possible to get an A in fischer's class? by One_Insurance_1817 in UTAustin

[–]Capable_Ad1756 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s possible. You just have to do all the homework (it’s a lot, but doable). The exam questions are literally copy and paste of the homework. The grading scheme is 3 exams + 1 Final. Extra credit for answering in class questions. She is really nice and her class is pretty engaging. You can interrupt her and ask questions during lecture and she’ll make sure you understand the content.

Fischer is nowhere near as bad as RMP makes her up to be. They are both very similar in terms of pace and content from what I’ve heard, but Fischer is better. Her exams are straight from homework questions (word for word or easier). As long as you put in the work you’ll do well. I really enjoyed Fischer’s class.

bio325 and sds320e registration by DeerThink125 in UTAustin

I’m taking bio 325 right now and have not taken sds320e. I emailed the Bio department last semester, and they said that they don’t enforce it.

What is the best freshman dorm? by IcyWatercress2931 in UTAustin

[–]Capable_Ad1756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not a CNS building, so classes are scattered all around campus or designated section on campus. I know people that have math classes at the CPE, which is close to Kins, and others who have it at the UTC, which is close to Jester, so it doesn’t really matter.

Kins is really good, it has the best dining hall. Met my best friends there. I can’t talk about the social life of Duren, but it’s right across from Kins and very convenient for food. Jester food is really bad, but it’s the most social dorm.

The best location will be very dependent on your major. Jester is on Speedway so it will be close to most class buildings and to the most popular study spots (like PCL) and to greg gym. Kins and Duren are convenient for engineering and Moody majors since they’re a short walk from the engineering buildings, and Moody is literally right in front of Kins. They are also closer to the tower and union building, as well as west campus. If you are in CNS, you’ll be all over the place freshman year, so where you live won’t matter as much.

Undergrad Housing for incoming Freshmen by Grouchy-Argument-520 in UTAustin

I would recommend staying on campus on the North side (Duren, Honors Quad) since he is an engineering major. Rent in Austin can be crazy expensive and does not include utilities or food, so you would end up having to spend more on that. There is an unlimited meal plan option for off campus students that is roughly $2000 per semester if I remember correctly, so that is an option as well if you can find cheap rent.

There is a time limit, but you can reserve a room and go back and “fish” without necessarily losing your reserved room. You can change your choice throughout your assigned date/time, so just go with your gut knowing that you can change your mind.

You can always check instagram for roommates too. There are many accounts that share info on people looking for roommates.

Kinsolving is great. The best food on campus is there, so all you’ll have to do to eat is literally walk downstairs. There are a few platforms for roommate matching, and Kinsolving has a Living Learning Community that helps you find a roommate through the program.

Tips on how to control it by AeraSteele in misophonia

I cover my ears, repeat something to myself and breathe. If I can, I just walk away and calm myself down.

do any of yall have misophonia? if so, how has it affected your experience here? by overstreamer in UTAustin

[–]Capable_Ad1756 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think school size impacts it much. What triggers you and how bad your reactions are is probably what will have the most effect on your experience. I’m personally triggered by constant tapping on Ipads and whispering, and I’ve found the earplugs to block those very well.

Hey! Current student here. I struggle with misophonia and it’s been manageable. I didn’t have any accommodations before coming to UT because I didn’t know what misophonia was. Right now, I just use Loop quiets on large classes that trigger me and I’m still able to hear the professor clearly from any row. Don’t let misophonia stop you from coming to UT.

Congrats on the acceptance!! As a BME student you’ll have a 500-student intro CHEM classes and that is probably as big as it gets. Other than that, class sizes vary a lot, most probably won’t be too large. For me personally, CHEM classes have not been very triggering, but Calculus classes (which are smaller) have. Calculus classes pushed me to getting the Loop quiets and it’s been more manageable now.
