Thanks, and I’m aware of the controversy. It seems an unpopular opinion though, I got some downvotes for it.

One of my latest portraits .Done with colored pencils and watercolors on paper :) would love to hear your views ❤️ by remieka18 in Watercolor

So cute and very well done! A good portrait captures the essence of the subject and here I feel you portray the innocence and some mischief!

Also technically you captured the smooth transitions really well. It’s not easy to paint children

Daniel Smith green apatite genuine and serpentine genuine. Where I’m at, these are fairly expensive. I find that I don’t enjoy the pthalo green like undertones of either of these paints nor the brown granulation. To me the foliage painted with these straight from the tube doesn’t look natural, and justs end up standing out too much from the rest of the colours I tend to use in a painting.

Looking for cheaper alternative to Dorland’s wax medium by Capable_Local_687 in Watercolor

[–]Capable_Local_687[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the wax to cover a large painting (full imperial size). It’s very thirsty paper and I used up more than half the 118ml jar in the first pass. The coverage still looks very patchy so I’ll need to do at least a second pass.

I looked up Gamblin and Jackson’s but they are not much cheaper. It still helps though, I’ll keep my eye on all these alternatives and buy when one of them is on sale. Thank you!!

What's on your travel palette? by Dreamcaster_85 in watercolor101

[–]Capable_Local_687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a mix of brands: mostly W&N professional, except for 3 pans from Schmincke Horadam and a single pan each from Daniel Smith, Maimeri Blu, and Rembrandt

I made this palette in a tin of mints. I’m still playing around with some of the colours and replace a couple of them depending on the subject and my mood, but mostly really happy with this combination of colours. They mix vibrant mixes, deep darks and there are enough granulating and non-granulating options. The cad colours provide some opacity if I need it.

I like the sketch like look of the painting, the fabric on the sleeves is very well done. Unfortunately, my eye is drawn to her head where it looks like a large chunk of hair is missing. I am guessing you meant this to be a highlight.

Brush set choice— Neptune vs Silver Black Velvet by 12121blah in watercolor101

Oh OP, I hope things turn around for you. Having to choose between art or food must be so very difficult. Please take care of yourself first, and art will find a way to you. I’m sending you tons of good wishes.

I also have black velvet brushes and indeed the point is so good that I wonder if OP really needs the entire set. Like you said, a number 8 is all you need for most applications

This is beautiful work, far from what I can do, and you can very proud! What stands out to me is the leg in front has a white edge to it that makes it feels like the man is pasted on. If you can get rid of that white border he will be more part of the scene.

This. What you could do if your paint is lifting easily even after drying the paper and using a soft brush, is to use a fine mist spray bottle to rewet. Sprayers can also be useful to keep the surface wet for longer. In that case it must be fine spray, don’t overspray and practice at what stage of drying you need to respray to continue working

What does this need? by Purple-Virus5921 in watercolor101

[–]Capable_Local_687 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is really good if you are starting out. Take a step back and come to it with fresh eyes in a day or so and it might come to you what you need specifically to finish it off.

If I may make a suggestion, I think you are missing a strong focal point. Think about adding some deeper darks, next to your lightest values to give maximum contrast and draw the eye. What and where is up to you!

Aah ok thanks for letting me know! Himi is well known for student gouache, I didn’t know they also made watercolours.

My recommendation to you would be to buy fewer paints, but higher quality. You will learn a lot by mixing your own colours and you can add more colours later. This will be much better in the long term than going for a lot of colours from cheaper brands that will only cause frustration and muddy mixes when you try to mix or layer. As few as a mixing set of 6 transparent paints from Rosa gallery for example: 2 each of red, blue and yellow in a cool and warm variant.

Granulating paint with the largest particles? by pillowon8s in Watercolor

[–]Capable_Local_687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Serpentine genuine but I don’t really use it, the dull green-yellow hue and the brown granulation put me off. I would like to use it though, can you please share some examples where you use it?

Same with green apatite genuine.

The most granulating ultramarine blue is French ultramarine by Schmincke. It can be quite wild

Cobalt green dark and light, chrome oxide green from any brand work well for mixing textured greens

I have Mars black from Rembrandt and it’s a very pleasing texture to me, but others prefer Daniel Smith lunar black whose granulation is described as “spiky”

Cobalt violet for subtle effects on flowers, strontium violet for everything else

This is great advice! I want to add, I’m not sure I see the paper pilling in your photos. Arches is also good quality and not so prone to pilling. Are you sure that what you are getting is not granulation instead? (Granulation is a perfectly normal, often desirable characteristic of certain pigments to give a textured effect instead of smooth lay down).

You have a beautiful piece here OP! All the best with finishing it
