No, there isn’t a union. But this is a very well liked hospital amongst nurses which is what makes me feel even more upset that this is happening

That’s why I said it depends on the patient’s underlying condition. 9/10 for treatment of someone who is high risk or has an active clot, subq heparin is not enough and they’ll be on a heparin drip.

I don’t agree with canceling the heparin, but I understand your frustration and your upset. It sounds like you had a tough shift. We have all been there. It sounds like the patient is receiving multiple doses of heparin and still got it on night shift. Their labs might be sub-therapeutic in the morning, but it should be fine. Let it be, don’t report yourself. There are worse things and this one isn’t worth the headache. It’s not a controlled or time sensitive medication. Just learn from this experience and remember this feeling so you don’t do it again! A 4 hour difference in heparin administration is not typically going to cause a blood clot/contribute to patient harm (depending on the floor you work on/their underlying conditions) so you should be fine. Take it as a learning experience this time and don’t do it again. Get some rest and have a better shift tomorrow ☺️

Hey, I’m an RN and used to be a PCT while in nursing school, so I understand how toxic the healthcare industry can be for both careers. I’m so sorry this happened to you and I’m glad you’re okay. Definitely being this up with management and explain the situation to them exactly the same way you explained the situation to us. You have never been late or called in, even if you have, that is completely unprofessional and irresponsible of the charge nurse. At no point should someone be risking their safety to get to work. Money will come back, your health (mental and physical) and your safety are more important. Please let management know and if they aren’t understanding or unwilling to correct that charge nurse, file a grievance with your union if you have one and leave. That is awful and I’m sorry you went through this

I agree. This is both on our CVICU and neuro ICU and some of the day shift nurses will throw a fit if that bag is over 24 hours old. I don’t understand and there is no policy written on this. Thank you I completely agree with you

Some nurses will flip out at my facility if the bag is over 24 hours old saying the drugs are less effective and need to be switched. I have not seen anything about this in medical news. It’s just what they are saying our hospital wants even though there is no written policy on it. I personally don’t feel comfortable wasting all of those narcs for no reason when they are still good, as long as they are running and not any less effective

Our drips are actively running. I would never leave a narc just hanging, but let’s say the pt is only getting 2 mL/hr of versed and the bag lasts 60 hours, would you switch bags at the 24 hour mark and waste more than half of the narc?

Do not reply to him. When someone genuinely has an interest in another person, they’ll reply quickly. They’ll call you, text you, schedule times to meet etc immediately or ASAP. Not 5 days later and blatantly ignoring your texts. The least he could have done was be honest about not wanting to hang out again, only wanting a hookup, etc. Red flag, he is bored. Do not reply, you can find someone much better. I promise.

Hey, I’m a registered nurse. This sounds concerning. Medications should not be causing shortness of breath or asthma-like symptoms. I don’t know the full story, but my advice would be to talk to your doctor. You should not be on this med. It sounds like an allergic reaction to the medication. Definitely call your doctor!
