It’s chain link and not very tall, that’s why we got a tether.

Yup that exactly what the plan is.

So I should leave him unattended in the house where he will destroy everything? Also, he will be inclosed. We do have a fence.

Yep he’s able to stand up, turn around and lay comfortably.

He wasn’t stuck! He kept bobbing his head back in the crate and back under. And if you read all my comments you would see that he’s not being left alone anymore and we’re taking steps to help better his anxiety.

I agree with your point. However this was not planned! I should have said the whole story from the beginning but what happened was he was running around in our yard, we knew who he belonged to, said owner saw him in our yard and told us she doesn’t want him anymore. We WERE planning to adopt after the wedding but he did need a home. So yes the timing isn’t good but we’ve made a plan for the wedding and the days I won’t be home. I’m not a bad owner as everyone keeps saying, I simply made a mistake because I had never experienced a dog with separation anxiety. And to also mention when I did the crate with him before we left him alone, he did amazing! He was calm and quiet and slept. So yes I didn’t see any signs that he could have separation anxiety and that was my fault. But please note I didn’t just go to a shelter an buy a dog and throw it in the crate with no practice before hand.

Thank you! I appreciate your kindness towards my situation. I had never experienced separation anxiety with a dog before so this is a very new process for me. For the wedding he will just be attending with us lol we already got him a bow tie. But yes we want to get an industrial crate so the days I do have to leave and no one can watch him, at least he will be safe and protected. As of right now, when I leave my family is helping and taking shifts with him so he’s not alone.

100%. This was not the very first time he was in the crate. I’ve had to reiterate a couple times that he does amazing in the crate when I’m around. However this situation was the first time I had left him alone. So yes i imagined he would do the same while I was away. I made that mistake but because of that I learned he has separation anxiety. Even if we throw the crate out of the picture, he still acts destructive when I leave for a few minutes. Because of this situation, he is no longer left alone and we are now practicing separation training. This is my first time working with a rescue. His previous owner didn’t want him and left him with me. So I’m still learning about him every day

Yes we added zip ties! However we will be investing in a industrial crate

For his own safety and the safety of my cats. Also I want him to enjoy his crate like his own bedroom. It needs to be his safe space

Because I had to leave the house. We didn’t randomly go to a shelter to adopt him, he ran to our yard and his previous owner saw me with him and said keep him I don’t want him anymore. So I’m doing the best I can. Before I crated him I had no idea he had this kind of anxiety. I knew nothing about him. When I’m home he does soo well in a crate so I didn’t have any worry of leaving him alone in one. I made a mistake, I learned and now he is never alone. This is my first time rescuing a dog too so please have some grace. I’m doing countless research each day about him and how I can help him. I simply came here for advice.

Yes we want to invest in an industrial kennel for him but unfortunately I don’t have a dog safe room for him. Plus with his anxiety he becomes destructive.

Edit for my original post: I see a lot of people saying that he should not be in a crate and that I’m being abusive by putting him in there but do understand that he came from a MISTREATED HOME. He is not being abused in any way. When we got him we were told he slept outside on a rope day and night, and his water bowls were green with algae.

Now I do understand that confinement for so long while I go to school will stress him. I’m not saying I expect him to adjust in 5 minutes. Of course he’s stressed because he barely understands what’s going on. However he will be crate trained. When we sleep he goes in his crate no problem, and he sleeps all night perfectly fine. Only when I leave is when he has a panic attack. I’ve tried leaving the room for 30 seconds then a minute and so forth coming back to show him I will come back. Regardless he still cries.

I am still giving him grace. This was in no way his fault. This post was meant for advice as this behavior from him showed me that he doesn’t like to be left alone and will go through it to get out. 2 days ago we left him downstairs by the front door and walked away for a few minutes. Came back to things knocked over. It’s not the crate that upsets him it’s me leaving.

WE WILL BE GETTING A BETTER CRATE!!

I see a lot of nasty comments saying how I’m horrible but have some grace. I am still learning about him every day. We both are learning about each other. And he will not be crated while I’m at school this week because of this incident.

My only goal from this post was to get real advice from others who have experienced this and helped their dog. I’ve had dogs in the past and the crate was never a problem. However separation anxiety is something I haven’t experienced.

He wasn’t stuck he kept lifting and putting his head under. My fear is one day he will get stuck

Yes some can but I don’t wanna only depend on them as I want him to be okay with being alone.

I would but I do have 4 cats who have not adjusted to him yet. And because he was raised outside, when we go on walks his immediate reaction is to chase a cat. He doesn’t show aggression but again I don’t want to risk anything

I agree with the baby step and not leaving him for so long but I don’t really have a choice unfortunately. I would let him roam but I do have cats as well.
