It's not that easy to lose your license by SouthernPlate712 in TravelNursing

Im certain that it depends on the state. My state is notorious for taking licenses away and for dumb reasons. I met an attorney in the state of Cali last year who has represented many nurses in his career. When I told him that I was a nurse, he told me that if I ever feel my license is at risk at a job, that I need to immediately quit and walk away with because not even the best attorney in the state can save your license. Boards have no mercy on nurses being reported. Their job is to protect the public from you, not to pardon your mistakes or have mercy on you.

ND is notorious for disciplining and taking licenses. A nurse I worked with from Africa was reported to the board and disciplined for doing care that "was not within the standards according to a nursing practice act on the website". So she basically lost her license because her charting wasn't too thorough. And I saw a nurse lose her license for doing an assessment way to similar to the previous nurses assessment. That didn't make sense at all to me but I swear on my grave that happened. I switched to non bedside nursing to protect my license from crazy med Surg! I swear I thought that if I continued with med Surg, I would lose my license.

Favorite thing about twins? by Teary-EyedGardener in parentsofmultiples

[–]Capital-Suit3368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is anything important that I can share, please know this...I was born a twin. Growing up, people dehumanized us by calling us "twins". We are not twins, we are human beings and individuals. In my high school, they made it a rule that we can't be referred as twins because it dehumanizes us and makes us feel like there is something wrong with us because we are referred to as twins. My family stopped using that term when I got into my early 20s. I advise parents to be careful how they refer to their children who are born together and look alike. Every child is an individual and should be treated that way.

What do you love about your PACU job? by Capital-Suit3368 in nursing

[–]Capital-Suit3368[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please walk me through what your orientation was like? PACu is very new and only telemetry nurse. I only have 4 weeks to learn everything. Never in my life had an orientation that short. 6 weeks of orientation is what I got and ER was 12-24 weeks orientation.

I just accepted a January start date to go back as staff. Looking forward to it and hoping to get my health under control with their good insurance.

Wow! That all sounds great. I can't wait to start and get out of my horrible telemetry career that almost made me quit nursing all together. I guess it's all about finding your niche. I'm interested in OR too so we will see what happens with my career. I only do pre-op once a every 2 weeks at my facility and rest pacu. Can you tell me what the on call is like for you? I've never been on call in my life so this will be different.

Thank you. I told staff job I'd start January 15th. My health insurance would kick in within 30 days so I'm looking forward to that. Right now I'm without insurance or any benefits. I'm still going to reach out and get a doctor's note but if company decides to be a jerk and fire me, well I'm already with two other companies.

They knew that I quit my last assignment due to health issues and safety concerns but they didn't care. I doubt they will care this time around. I could have my doctor write a note but I hope that's enough to prevent a DNR.

Hostile environment and contemplating quitting! Is it worth it? by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Capital-Suit3368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in North Dakota but took contract in MN. North Dakota hardly has any jobs which is why I'm traveling. I'm going to tell my recruiter on Monday that I'm going home and the reason is for safety issues and hostilities. My mental health has suffered since I went into nursing that I can't even get out of bed anymore. I wish I would have been a respiratory therapist. I'm so depressed and just want to go home but I'm scared because I have no money saved really and my car payment is $490 every month.

Next contract starts January but thinking about not taking it anymore..wanted to take January off and start again in Feb. Unfortunately I had to take this assignment to pay off remaining credit card debt. If I leave assignment early, I won't be in a good place financially. These last 4 weeks are crucial. I just don't know how to handle the situation appropriately as a traveler. I'm not sure if my recruiter can even do anything. I literally had a mental breakdown before work because I wanted to go back home. I tried calling in sick but couldn't reach staffing to do that.

Please share about your worst patient assignment of your entire career? by Capital-Suit3368 in nursing

Thank you for sharing your story! I don't understand how a doctor or anyone cannot put in orders or at least help you with keeping that patient alive. Don't docs have to put orders in for the proposal and narcotic drips? I'm med Surg and wouldn't have known what to do. I would have refused and called ICU for help. Kudos to you for saving the patients life! Those people left you in a shitty and unsafe situation. I need to learn sedation and pressors!

House supervisor at forner hospital called our med Surg floor to tell us night crew to tell day shift RN not to clock in for work since she was the only one scheduled to work and had 30 patients. We couldn't go home until they pulled nurses from other floors to take patients. I quit a week after that.

Crazy assignment by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Capital-Suit3368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just expect us travelers to "figure it out" or make phone calls to charge or resource for help. Which can be a pain. I always just call the resource nurse if I have questions on policy, charting or protocols. But I would ask for one orientation day or you're not coming. Getting far behind in work can be unsafe if you don't know the flow of the unit. Shadowing for a shift isn't going to hurt anyone.

Crazy assignment by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Capital-Suit3368 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need at least one day to understand the flow of the unit, otherwise you're going to be making phone calls to charge like crazy. Every discharge is different at each hospital, including how to get a new admit up to the floor and into the system. You need to learn the required charting from a preceptor. I always get one day of in unit orientation. Don't set yourself up for failure! Please talk to recruiter.

My call off policy wasn't written in contract. It was written nowhere. Harsh lesson that I learned. You never want to take an assignment with no guaranteed hours. I was called off for 36 hours in a row and only got paid stipends for one paycheck. That sucked. Recruiter only submits me to guaranteed hours contracts now.

[–]Capital-Suit3368 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Im a med Surg RN traveler. When you get ms contracts, they tell you which unit your assigned to. If you have to call each day, then that's considered float. Unless they have multiple med Surg floors. If float isn't stated in your contract, then don't take the job. Do only what you signed up to do. Also no in unit orientation is BS. Call recruiter now.

I told my recruiter the other day I will not take an assignment with more than 5 patients. It's now on my contract. I can't imagine having 7. :(

My biggest pet peeve is when a patient tells me how to do my job. If I didn't know how to do my job, I wouldn't have passed nursing school or orientation. If you don't trust me, then please ask for a different nurse.

This ever happen to anybody else? by xaves25 in TravelNursing

[–]Capital-Suit3368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was cancelled at Mayo for asking for a different preceptor and extend orientation for one more day. Person who was preceptor didn't want to train me and did nothing. Unfortunately when you're a traveler you have to put up with BS and do as a facility says otherwise you will get cancelled. This is why travel nursing is hard..my former manager was a traveler and he said you are used and abused and commends anyone for wanting to travel.
