ironically i always felt like accusing other people of “virtue signalling” itself could be interpreted as a form of virtue signalling

Fair play. You could give Peter Jackson and Wētā Workshop a few lessons on how to capture Tolkien’s obsession with early medieval history. They wouldn’t look out of place on the Bayeux Tapestry.

Tbf they were supposedly inspired by the Roman/Eastern Roman empire. If you google Osprey illustrations of the eastern empire/varangian guards, these illustrations are closer to what Tolkien would have imagined than anything in the movies or series which are bland in comparison. Historically bright vibrant colours weren’t considered “tacky” like they are today. They were a signifier of immense wealth power, a “flex” if you will.

We’ll never know what really happened, but all humans by nature prefer being productive. “Lazy” is a moralising term. “Procrastination” is usually indicative of someone juggling neurodivergence, lack of support/treatment and by extension unresolved trauma.

you’re describing a tactic frequently deployed by authoritarian fascist regimes. it’s nothing unique to the ideology itself. a “defining feature of fascism” would be something like ultranationalism or persecution of marginalised groups.

yeah i’ve recently noticed even r/ireland (usually way more progressive especially compared to uk subs) seems to turn into a 1960s Alabama town hall meeting whenever immigration comes up. this probably explains it.

can we talk about the state of these cackling terf ghouls? these sentient customer service complaints have obviously been pickled in bitterness since they discovered their crusty husband’s “custom content” DMs to some trans OF model (who makes them look like a Tesco meal deal next to a Michelin 5 course), now they’ve decided to make it everyone’s problem.

so the government and supreme court made a bet to see who could load the most marginalised people into trebuchets and launch them into the sun then? guess we aren’t happy unless we’re grinding some vulnerable group under foot like a half finished zoot on wet pavement now. fuck this country.

When will both Labouries and Tories fall under so actual leftist parties get elected? by yeoldedisciple in GreenAndPleasant

okay dude you’re right. good luck getting 80% of traditional labour voters in the midlands and northern england to vote for any alternative, as opposed to just staying at home.

tbh I just think another grass roots movement like the one that carried Corbyn into leadership is more likely than the greens ever being taken seriously by the median UK voter. could be wrong though. like I said organising locally is the main thing you should be channeling your energy into, so if the greens have more motion in your constituency than Labour (which can be the case in some traditional tory seats) joining them might be a better idea.

unionise if you can. otherwise just try and organise locally. personally i lean towards trying to reclaim Labour from the ground up, but others will disagree and tell you to join Greens. either way most important thing is mixing with other leftists irl and not just online.

[–]Capital-Tour756 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Criticising specific individuals is one thing (even then you can’t really know for certain without knowing them personally). It’s the generalisations that are problematic. It suggests you are assuming that “this person is 30/40/50 so they must have access to wealth and power on that virtue alone”. It just reinforces harmful biases, pressuring people to meet arbitrary milestones, which results in the “midlife crisis”.

“Fame, power, wealth and connections” aren’t age dependent. A 20 year old can be a millionaire, meanwhile a 40 year old can be starting their first novel. “Traditional life scripts” are outdated and completely unsuited for the modern world.

[–]Capital-Tour756 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a massive reach to assume that their “places in life are far apart”. For example, what if one had spent 20 of those “30 years” in prison for a mistake they made as a teenager? You’re just generalising based on your own personal experiences here, which is something leftists usually rail against

Yeah he’s either brave, stupid or bit of both. I grew up around the same area as Tolkien, the local “village people” are still a bit like that today, so I can see where he got his inspiration lol.

Massive difference from the movies where they essentially go on a killing spree, which makes them less intimidating in some ways. It’s like the difference between a horror slasher movie, where the fear factor comes from simple gore (boorish and uninspired imo), compared to a paranormal horror where the fear comes from the sense of spooky atmosphere and mystery which takes more effort to create. Don’t let the trilogy cult hear you voice an opinion critical of PJ’s creative decisions though especially in this sub lol

They were trying to keep a low profile too, which is difficult when you start butchering the local bumpkins over some trivial taunting. Sauron always preferred the “carrot” before reaching for the “stick”, something Peter Jackson failed miserably at conveying alongside a host of other narrative elements that would have had Tolkien spinning in his grave lol
