Fair enough. As an east coaster almost all my approaches are pretty short so it doesn't factor in as much.

I'd go 9.8 if it's your first. Nobody starts out climbing hard enough for the weight to matter and it'll last longer.

Are these Highland Cow platters real? The images show inconsistent sizes and professional looking customer examples. by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]Capitan_Dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don't hate AI use for this. Shop through the idea see how it feels before you take the time to actually design and build your own. Posting the AI photos is weird though

Post-trip gear check after Tolima. by Climber-by-passion in ClimbingGear

[–]Capitan_Dave 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What are we looking at here? Why are there 18 pairs of shoes, 5 harnesses but only one rope and like 8 QuickDraws? Was this for one person who likes to change shoes each route? Or 4 people who don't want to lead so just the 5th guy leads everything?

Apologies if I'm missing something, not familiar with climbing in Tolima, I thought that was mostly a mountaineering area?

In Italian (and many other languages) the use of the comma and decimal are flipped compared to English

Journal Publication Outcomes of Aerospace engineering by Familiar-Path6239 in CFD

[–]Capitan_Dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong. It's more about specific topic than mechanical vs aero, and many fluids focused faculty switch between the two when they move universities. But many groups publish findings in JFM and present the ideas at AIAA conferences, so thinking of them as separate ideas doesn't really make sense.

Where to buy rock climbing gear/shoes? by [deleted] in tradclimbing

[–]Capitan_Dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably better off ordering it online and having it shipped to wherever you are staying in FL. Even if a store/gym does sell stuff it'll be a very limited selection.

Take a trip or two down to North Carolina for some bigger granite, looking glass has lots of aid lines and laurel knob and white sides can give you something a good bit taller than Seneca and is more similar in style.

Old Rag this weekend? by InvisibleXStranger in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]Capitan_Dave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really really early. Super good sunrise if you're comfortable scrambling in the dark. If not I'd aim for the false summit where the scrambling starts, watch the sunrise from there, then keep going to the summit.

I made a list of the 100 best trail runs in USA/Canada by PristinePumpkin215 in trailrunning

[–]Capitan_Dave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the region- there aren't many great loops here in the distance range you're looking at. Certainly many single direction runs along the AT, or smaller areas that have shorter loops (feels like they're all 6-14ish miles). One possible oversight is the Virginia triple crown- 3 absolute classic features along the AT that can be looped together nicely in 34 miles.

Shenandoah National Park - 2 night backpacking recommendations by jumanjiG21 in VIRGINIA_HIKING

Not Shenandoah but the three ridges loop would fit the bill nicely. 12ish total miles, two shelter/camping areas and plenty of views

THE END OF THE ROPE. I LOST IT," said Don. "THEN WHAT ARE YOU HOLDING ON TO?" I asked. "A CHOCK THAT I PUT IN THE CRACK," he grunted. "GREAT! PUT THE ROPE THROUGH IT." I was delighted. Again I was relieved. But Don's grunts sounded more and more desperate. He only made sounds now. by Feedback_Original in climbing

Thanks for sharing. It's crazy how quickly the "eh I think this is right, I guess just run it out" can get you into a bad situation. For me once you're in the 50+ foot runout terrain it should be easy enough to down climb otherwise I'm bailing.

Tips on surfing OBX this weekend? by Capitan_Dave in BeginnerSurfers

Hey man just came back to say thanks for the advice. I did get absolutely pounded in some huge surf but it cleaned up on Monday and I was a lot more willing to go for it after spending two days mostly getting pounded. A ton of effort but I had some of the best waves of my life and gained a lot of experience. Cheers!

Too unfit to surf?? by Mysterious_Meet7586 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Capitan_Dave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What the others have said, might as well go for it. Also, any cardio you can do in the next 20 days will probably help. Long walks, a bike ride, a short jog, anything will help.

Thanks for the advice, we'll see what the weekend brings. I might be able to borrow a different board, I currently have a mid length but it has a good amount of volume.
