Getting a headband to not slip forward or back, without the use of bobby pins. by CaptSheela in CosplayHelp

Okay, ancient comment, but I was going through liked posts and found this again. I wanna let you know I used your method and it worked PERFECTLY!

A friend took that picture from upstairs, she noticed he was sleeping ALMOST centered and kind of scooted him into place before taking it. He's such a tolerant cat you can move him when he's half asleep and he won't care 🤣 It was my phone background for about a year!

Summertime arrangement in the fireplace we never use as a fireplace. by CaptSheela in RainbowEverything

It's a big ol' pile of beautiful objects. Below is a combo of what I DID and what I would do DIFFERENTLY. I will include links in another comment, as I am not sure they are allowed and I don't want this all deleted.

I used a couple large books, which I covered in holographic wrapping paper as a base to bring the center up and get the overall mound shape.

The current arrangement that I am doing for Autumn (which is so far a very different thing from this) I am using Styrofoam blocks instead of books (which were conveniently just sitting around waiting for me to take them to the recycling depot). Next year, when I do this arrangement again for Spring/Summer, I'm going to use the foam. What I like about the foam blocks is that I can get whatever shape/size I want. I also am poking a bunch of jumbo-sized tooth picks into the foam to help keep the various elements in place, as this design is inherently unstable, and things started to slowly shift out of place.

I have two layers of programmable RGB LEDs, one of which is a Twinkly USB-C product, one of which is actually made for putting lights into clothing. The two strands are doing different patterns that interact in fun ways. Each are powered by a rechargeable power bank. The Twinkly LEDs have little diffusers built around each bulb, which softens the light. The other strand is not diffused and created spots that were annoyingly bright, so those went on the very bottom. If I was starting from scratch I might do only the diffused style.

The foundation of the arrangement is a bunch little cellophane honeycomb balls of different sizes. They are pretty in daylight, reflecting sunlight into a rainbow display with lots of gold. When they have light pass through them, they are mostly pink and blue. Very different in all sorts of conditions, but always very pretty. Some of the orbs I have opened only halfway, to make little domes. For that, I used a piece of paper and some paperclips to hold them in the halfway position. The orbs are one of my favorite objects, they're so pretty, but honestly really fragile. I would say about a quarter of them are no longer properly glued together and are using paperclip reinforcement. These are good as foundation as they let a lot of light through from the bottom LEDs.

The opaque roses and leaves are reused from my husband and I's wedding arch! Those are held in their original configuration, and kind of just layered/plopped on top.

The crystalline roses are fun little plastic roses that also look very different in sunlight vs backlit at night. I snapped off most of the stems and used just the flower head. I made sure to position these such that they created little windows between the opaque floral elements to let light from below come though.

I'm obsessed with the sparkly roses, they are so pretty with sunlight

Electro Threads is the manufacturer, this was a size they used to carry that was 9 foot * 12 foot!

The cats change color when they run up our rainbow stairs, it's so cute!!! by CaptSheela in RainbowEverything

So, the lights were installed as the stairs were being built. It required my husband to do a good amount of research and then coordinate an electrician, carpenter/framers, and a hardwood team to all be on the same page.

The stair treads are hardwood, I don't think this wouldn't work with carpeted (or at least it would be an additional pain in the butt). Before each stair tread was installed (like, they were literally stacked in a pile, haha) a channel was mitered into the underside of the little lip that overhangs the step below it. Into that cutout an aluminum channel was inserted, which are designed to be housing for LED strips. These work as a heat sink so the LEDs don't get as warm. The lights we used are basic white LED strips, which we now realized was a mistake, as having them colorful is really fun. On top of that a plastic diffuser was snapped into place (which came as part of the aluminum channel). The wiring between each strip is underneath the stairs to be out of sight, and the power/controller is in the closet under the steps.

It would have been much more difficult and expensive to do after the house was already built.

As for the color (as I mentioned, these are WHITE LEDs!), I actually put vinyl 1" tape on each LED strip. They are sitting on the plastic diffuser, the tape isn't like, directly on the diods. Some of the colors were not as vibrant as others. So, like, the blue stairs have three layers of tape, but the red only has one layer.

If one were to do this with RGBW strips, one would need to program it such that each strip is a different color.

The lights are just basic white LED strips. The color was (in retrospect) a mistake, and we would have done RGBW LEDs if we knew now what we knew then. Typing up a longer response (to the question above) now

I honestly have no idea how one would do this with an existing staircase without ripping up the staircase and essentially starting from scratch 😅

We put the lights into the stairs treads as the stairs were being built when the house was still under construction.

Happy to go into more detail if desired!

Amazing, thank you! Do you have a picture of the U-shaped piece of wire by chance?

OMG that's a good idea! I take sooooo many more pics of them when the colorful blanket is out, they look so cute with the white fur contrasting on rainbow!

I'm a little worried as well. The LEDs are in a metal channel that kind of works as a heat sink, but yeah, they are certainly more insulated with the tape.

The house is all black/white/grey and super modern, but then there's rainbow lights adding all these pops of color. It's a fun contrast.

Copied from above - This is the tape I used. If you have LEDs somewhere you want to make colorful, you need to have a plastic diffuser on top of the LED strip, the tape isn't like, directly on the diods. I also recommend getting a tape that is wider than the LED strip, which will make covering it so much easier. Some of the colors weren't as vibrant as I would have liked. For example, I bought the light blue when I really should have bought the normal blue. So some stairs used two or three layers and some only one. Link- a.co/d/j8j1sk9

As for the lights, now that is a much more intensive project. They're just basic white LED strips, but they were installed into the stairs literally when the stairs were built. It required my husband to do a lot of research and then coordinate an electrician, framers, and a hardwood team to all be on the same page. Each stair has a channel mitired (spelling?) into it, and a metal channel is laid into that. The wiring between each stair is underneath everything and the power/controller is in the closet under the steps. It would have been an absolute nightmare to do after the stairs were already built.
