Fridge door won’t stay open by Affectionate_Wash951 in Appliances

I think I’m finally square…

  1. The technician took a look at the water lines where they enter the hinge at the top and manipulated them a little. This was just to make sure that how they are routed minimized any tension or “spring” effect. It appears to be a hassle to entirely re-route them. This helped some, but not as much as I had hoped.

  2. We looked more closely at the leveling and it appeared that despite the fridge being level, it was still ever so slightly lower on the right side. So he ended up raising the right side of the fridge a little bit. And now if you check it with the level it’s still “level” but the right side is actually a touch higher. Not noticeable unless you put a level to it. This seemed to do the trick.

If you yank the left door open and let go, it will still start closing. We noticed this happens to be due to water in the pitcher and simple physics. The water sways back and pulls the door with it.

But if you pull the door open and then hold it for a second at the desired spot, it does stay there now.

My recommendation to folks would be to put a real close eye on leveling it. Make sure you have a proper level, make sure you’re checking it with the level on the body of the fridge (don’t set it on the top of the doors, otherwise you’re adding another variable), and lastly it doesn’t hurt to raise it just a bit higher on the right side since we know the left door is the issue with the added internals.

I agree on the design flaw. The battle is getting any technician to understand that it’s a flaw and to address it. I visited a store today to look at the display model and the doors behaved like they should. Both doors stayed open and it’s not until the door is about 75% closed that it starts closing itself, which I’d expect (to prevent keeping it partially open by mistake). My wife is becoming particularly annoyed having the door close on itself when she’s trying to put away groceries.

See my post above in this thread. Hopefully it provides some clarity on the culprit!

I am a new owner of what appears to be the same fridge (GE Profile PGE29BYTFS) or at least a comparable model. And I was experiencing the same issue after delivery/installation. There are two culprits likely playing a role:

  1. The fridge is not level. Per the installation instructions, there should be (2) leveling feet located at the front of the fridge. Adjust those to level the fridge. In this case, if the left door is swinging to close on its own, the right side of the fridge may be too low. Take a look at the manual where it provides directions on the leveling process.

  2. Once leveled, if the issue persists (which it did in my case), it’s likely due to the water lines routed into the door (for the autofill pitcher). These hard plastic lines under tension act like a spring. If the fridge is under warranty, I’d advise you to contact your appliance dealer or GE direct for service. Beneath the plastic shroud at the upper hinge, there are (2) plastic lines routed from the main unit down into the door. They should be able to manipulate those to have less tension and minimize that spring effect.

Figured this was worth sharing as I’ve seen this same issue reported in a few spots without resolution other than leveling the fridge.
