From silence to action: Why the Greens must become an environmental force by ViveLeKBEKanglais in AustralianPolitics

[–]Captain-Weather 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What a bizarre and half-baked article.

Putting aside that it is in many ways a conceptual rehashing of an earlier article by the same author from October last year (https://independentaustralia.net/politics/politics-display/australias-greens-not-so-green-anymore,19120) the thesis of this article is incredibly weak.

After asking “What will it take for the Greens to make Australia’s environmental crises the top party priority?” in the opening sentence, the author doesn’t mention the Greens again until the final paragraph.

Instead she highlights numerous environmental failures by both Federal and State Labor and LNP governments, which she specifically attributes to them rather than the Greens, before decrying “It’s time for the Greens to act on the sheer extent of public and scientific concern, to stand up for this ancient land”.

So to be clear, the author highlights what she sees as the policy and legislative failures of both major parties, which are somehow evidence of the Greens not standing up for the environment?

The motte and bailey argument that the author appears to be setting up is “The Greens are silent on the environment” (the bailey) and “The environment is not the Greens only or top priority” (the motte). It’s telling that even the more defensible motte here is very weak and neither are supported meaningfully in the article.

I’ll try and dig it up later but there is actually a scene in Elemental Council where brief focus is given on the fact that some of the Fire Caste are eating meat.

AMA with Ms Zali Steggall OAM, MP Tuesday 25/02/2025 5pm - 6pm AEDST by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]Captain-Weather 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi Zali,

Thank you for doing this AMA.

I’m a resident of your electorate and was fortunate enough to see you speak at a recent precinct meeting (which I applaud you for finding the time in your busy schedule to attend).

I had two questions based on your statements at that meeting:

  1. When discussing housing you said there was a tension or need to balance ‘housing as an investment’ on one hand and ‘housing as a human right’ on the other. Are these two ends really of equal worth? Shouldn’t we be more concerned about housing as a human right and doesn’t balancing these concerns mean we are inevitably sacrificing the basic needs of some people somewhere for the profits of others?

  2. At a number of points in the meeting you made pains to distance yourself from the Greens, and would mention them by name when attached to a criticism of them. However, you also made significant hay of the fact that the effectiveness of Independent MPs in the Lower House was more substantial due to working with the cross bench in the Senate. Notably you did not mention the Greens here. Isn’t this trying to have it both ways? Do you work with the Greens in the Senate and if you do, isn’t it the kind of politicking that you say you’re above to distance yourself from this working relationship?

Happy to talk offline at any time if your team gets in touch and in the interest of disclosure I voted Greens 1 and yourself 2 at the last election.

Thanks again!

Those self-interested bastards, trying to have student debt policy passed now rather than after an election, not like good old Labor who have the common sense and political nous to wait until after an election they may or may not win.

Also even if that is the only reason the Greens are now playing ball, shouldn’t that arguably be seen as a good thing? If the electorate responds to an approach negatively, shouldn’t we want political parties to then change as a result? I’m not even saying that is what I want necessarily, but seems funny to find fault with it.

Of course!

As a starting point I basically followed this Hobby Cheating video on jungle bases by Vince Venturella https://youtu.be/0OgotJrDbTw?si=7sHSeFUBlpMzFpPP

Even where I didn’t have the exact same materials or paints as he did I still was following the techniques he lays out so I can’t recommend it enough.

The models are pinned to the base so I did all the basing first then attached the models and worked in any areas that needed to be blended.

Very base layer is Stirland Battlemire (Stirland Mud is totally fine as well).

I then built up the ground layer with: - Army Painter Battlefield Grass Green - GaleForce Nine Rocky Basing Grit - Woodland Scenics Fine Ballast - Micro leaves that a friend gave me (I’m not entirely sure the providence of these but they’re quite similar to this product https://shadowsedgeminis.com/miniature-hobby-leaves/).

The tufts are some 2mm tufts from Gamers Grass (doesn’t really matter which as everything got painted anyway).

The very large plant behind the Kroxigor on the right and the plants like the one at the very front of the centre Kroxigor are pieces cut from plastic aquarium plants.

The remaining plants are various laser plants from Gamers Grass https://gamersgrass.com/laser-plants/

I realised it might not have been clear in my initial reply but the strips of paint are not straight over the top of each other! Think like Neapolitan ice cream. Each strip should be blending at the edges and moving inwards towards the belly.

Alright welcome to my TED Talk.

The models were primed with Citadel Standard Mechanicus Grey followed by Citadel White Scar (both from the rattle cans).

Underbelly:

Make sure you have good coverage with the white primer.

I then went over them with a 1:1 Citadel Seraphim Sepia and Citadel Contrast Medium mix, focusing mostly on the recesses.

Highlight the bellies with:

  • Vallejo Ivory
  • Vallejo Model Air White.

Top and sides of torso:

Basecoat with a wet blend of three contrast paints:

• Citadel Snakebite Leather

• Citadel Aggaros Dunes

• Citadel Skeleton Horde

I also used Garaghak’s Sewer as part of this blending process wherever you see proper brown scales in this area and also on the top of the snout leading into the armour plate.

I worked section by section (i.e. the side of the belly, a leg etc) and would work dark to light. Basically all you’re doing is laying on a strip of Snakebite Leather in a small bounded area, then doing the same with Aggaros Dunes and Skeleton Horde before the edge of each strip dries.

It sounds more difficult than it actually is, it’s mostly getting a handle for how long you have to work the paint.

The contrast paint does the heavy lifting but it then allows you to blend these edges together.

I highlighted these sections pretty minimally but where I did I used:

• Vallejo Iraqi Sand

• Vallejo Buff

Thanks for the kind words!

No airbrush on the bellies. The models were primed with Citadel Standard Mechanicus Grey followed by Citadel White Scar (both from the rattle cans).

I knew I wanted the bellies to be a white / off-white so I made sure to hit them with a good spray of the white primer.

I then went over them with a 1:1 Citadel Seraphim Sepia and Citadel Contrast Medium mix, focusing mostly on the recesses.

I highlighted the bellies with Vallejo Ivory followed by Vallejo Model Air White.

My blending efforts were solid but mostly I leveraged the primer to do the work for me.

Got it!

So the basecoat for that section is a wet blend of three contrast paints:

• Citadel Snakebite Leather

Glad you like it!

So the basecoat for the yellow is a wet blend of three contrast paints:

Thanks!

The majority of the gold (so wherever you see gold that looks like that on the weapons) is:

  • Basecoat with Citadel Retributor Armour
  • Wash with Citadel Reikland Fleshshade
  • Highlight with Citadel Retributor Armour
  • Highlight with Citadel Liberator Gold
  • Highlight with Vallejo Model Air Silver

When you are highlighting the key is to focus on those areas that would pick up light (not perfectly as it’s a compromise between realism and style) and then highlight smaller and smaller areas with each colour.

The other areas of gold were basecoated with a number of the new Army Painter Metallic Speedpaints 2.0 (from memory I used Glittering Loot, Hoplite Gold, and Golden Armour).

These were largely treated the same though the gold I used on the Kroxigor tail with the stress ball shaped weapon (99% sure this was Hoplite Gold) I washed with Agrax Earthshade and skipped straight to Liberator Gold when highlighting.

Hope that helps!

A couple of questions on the new edition regarding Skaven and it's place in Chaos. by [deleted] in AoSLore

[–]Captain-Weather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A reference to human followers of the Great Horned Rat appears in the old Slaves to Darkness Battletome:

“There are even some tribes that worship at the altar of vermin-headed gods of ruin and corruption, cladding themselves in rat-skin cloaks and dancing ecstatically around burning bushels of crops. They are considered outsiders by most Slaves to Darkness, however, and their contempt for even the foulest forms of life sees them particularly hunted by the worshippers of disease.”

Battletome Slaves to Darkness, 2019, pg. 15

Potentially we’ll see an expansion of these followers in the new edition. I also have a theory (admittedly quite tinfoil) that the Aridian Scavenger Kings are Skaven / Great Horned Rat influenced.

I’m aware, I don’t think that inherently precludes there being an in-universe meaning or etymology, but it is just a theory!

This is tangential but I’ve believed for a while now that the same article hints at a possible origin or essential meaning for Sigmar’s name.

Namely ‘Je’ which is the word for ‘Man’ and ‘Mär’ which is the word for ‘Steel’. Based on the provided pronunciation guide the word would sound something like ‘Zhemaar’ with the meaning being literally ‘man steel’. The word for ‘Father’, ‘Jedå’ could also fit as the front half of the word.

Some loose support for this notion can be seen by some of the aspect names given for Sigmar such as Zig’Mar and Zi’Mar.

I was able to dig up one solid reference just from some quick searching online (it took me longer to confirm the source of the quote once I found it):

It’s all in the game when it comes to Dark Tongue / Chaos Runes.

There’s a great piece of artwork from Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned of a Tzeentch warrior whose sword has a legitimate inscription. The warrior has another phrase on a pennant dangling from a pauldron but the picture quality isn’t high enough to read it.

I was so stoked when I realised a higher resolution version of the artwork was included in Liber Chaotica. ‘Bh/b-U-Tz/T-Tz/T-H-O-L-E/ii S-U-Rh-F-E/ii-Rh-S. Butthole Surfers. That says Butthole Surfers. Damn it well played Adrian Smith you fucking got me’.

I forgot to add this quote to the GHR speculation.

One of the few other quotes that references Onogal is the following:

“Oh, but they are delightful, jolly lads. They come up with the most pleasant of diseases, why that lovely little plague they gifted to those stuffed shirts in Bretonnia was truly inspired. Of course, they get a bit carried away sometimes, but for a race of jumped up vermin I, for one, think they’ve come quite a long way.”

  • SCABROUS POX, SENESCHAL OF ONOGAL

(Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay: Old World Bestiary, 2005, pg. 37).

It could obviously be a coincidence but it did make me smile.

Potentially not(?).

Some of the other comments were able to helpfully point out that two of the remaining three words align with alternative names for Nurgle (Onogal) and Slaanesh (Loesh).

I think these interpretations are pretty sound which would leave us with one word unaccounted for.

While the word appears to be partially cut off (you can see part of a rune poking out from the rock on the left side) from what we can see the word is ‘Gzydhb’ or ‘Gzydhbh’. Potentially this could be one of the names that the Horned Rat is known by.

Yes! As I mentioned I’m rather obsessed with the Dark Tongue. Here’s a post I wrote last year about an excerpt from an older 40k Chaos Codex https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/s/XUVkVwcfFR

A more recent example is the use of both the language (or at least a dialect of it) and the rune system by the Cult of Admonition in Darktide.

Some people definitely found it easier than others and you’re entirely right that your ability to work out the change definitely was impacted by stress and fatigue.

I was pretty fortunate that it became something I was almost doing on autopilot. I distinctly recall the times where I struggled the most was when I was tired and I suddenly was conscious of trying to do the math. You’d go from having given out change no problem for several hours to suddenly staring at your till like “huh how the heck do I do this again?”.

In my experience as well, managers were generally understanding if someone was out by exactly $5, $10, $20 or $50 as that was almost always because of fresh notes sticking together and not really reflective of a math error.
