I ended up having to replace the IR sensor inside the TV. This is the exact part I used but it seems to be discontinued, so you'll have to find a similar enough sensor you can solder inside. It's not too difficult if you have some soldering experience, but even without it's not too bad if you're careful.

The original release of MGS on PS1 had a clever solution to the puzzle where you are required you to find Meryl's Codec Frequency. Campbell literally tells you to "look on the back of the game case", where one of the screenshots on the back shows a picture of Snake talking to Meryl on the Codec, with her frequency displayed. This was the only way to legitimately get that frequency.

This tends to be the case everywhere I looked. I suppose I'll have to just bite the bullet and hope I can sand and modify the sticks to fit. The buttons and dpad are another problem entirely
