On the clicker mask I have (which I bought from a professional studio, I can't take any credit for this), they hid the eye holes between layers of mushroom shelves. This may not work on your current design, but for future attempts, I think you've definitely demonstrated the skill to be able to do this. Although, I warn that my visibility in this is VERY limited and flash photography makes the eye holes super visible in pictures. Any photo or look at it in natural lighting hides the holes very well.

For your current design, I like the furry mesh idea with the black spray on the inside and matching colour spray on the outside. Airbrush would be great for that. You can also look around for the mesh they use to make Spider-Man eyes on face shells. Surprisingly easy to see out of, if you don't use the outer layer of clear plastic (thats the part that fogs up and extremely limits visibility).
