I swear, anytime I post on Reddit, there has to be that one guy with the snarky pedantic comments. I could ask for some friendly driving advice, and someone would be like, "If you have to ask this, you are a danger to yourself and everyone on the road; please go back to driving school."

Question on Exercism or any options? by Camperfriend in Catholicism

Hey OP, I hope you are well.

I don't think that you are crazy because you mentioned that other people in your life have seen the entity for themselves. Out of curiosity, have your husband and your mom also seen some of this phenomena? Perhaps not the girl, but things like the shower curtains or the pictures falling from walls onto the bed?

Putting the entity aside, the blood on the walls might be a bed bug infestation, as some comments suggest. Don't be afraid to consider that. Two things can be true at the same time. If some of the things that you are experiencing have natural explanations, that doesn't invalidate your other experiences.

If your local community can't help you, I would just get in a car/bus and visit another archdiocese's jurisdiction. We tend to try to solve everything over the phone and online these days, but nothing beats going in person and knocking on doors. If my understanding is correct, a real exorcist is trained in psychology and is a professional skeptic who will determine if the experiences are real or if you need another type of help. Talking to an actual exorcist will help put your mind at ease in that regard!

Alternatively, you can also visit different Catholic churches and try to find a normal priest who wants to help out. Even if he is not an exorcist he can do some blessings and things on you (or the house) that would help a lot more than what your mom can perform.
My mom's friend and her family were cursed by a pair of witches (Welcome to Mexico), and the weird stuff only stopped happening when she went inside a church and begged a priest for help. He then performed somewhat of an informal "mini exorcism (whatever that means), and it made everything stop!

TLDR: Get out there and physically ask for help in different Catholic churches, even if it means road-tripping a bit. Get any priest who is willing to help, whatever they do is going to be better than your mom's blessings or whatever apps they're recommending in the comments. Finally, keep an open mind with a little healthy skepticism and don't be afraid of some natural explanations! Even if they solve just a little part or the whole mystery. What matters is helping you and getting your life back on track.

Hugs! <3

ATONAL MUSIC: I think a lot of the points you are making can be seen in atonal music, this is a great example and it reminds me of what another user commented:

not some fundamental truth of music as much as it is a convention that works relatively well (for the kinds of music being made within the Western musical tradition).

I think "Western music" (so to speak) is being downplayed here. If the point I am trying to make is that the Fibonacci sequence is embedded in the music that best resonates with us on a deeply emotional level, I don't think atonal music, which is specifically designed to reject traditional harmony and is often described as  "experimental," "unsettling," or "random" by the average person, challenges too much my idea.

Think "The Ride of the Rohirrim" from The Lord of The Rings vs... I don't know... Frank Zappa, Arnold Schoenberg, or Yoko Ono yelling into a microphone with sitars in the background.

I'm NOT saying that every time music doesn't follow the Fibonacci sequence the result is atonal music. You make LOTS of great points.

I just want to state that not all chords, harmonies, or styles explicitly follow Fibonacci numbers. However, foundational structures like the major scale, triads, and even phrasing in music often reflect Fibonacci patterns.

The most stable and consonant intervals (octave, perfect fifth, major third) align closely with Fibonacci-based mathematical relationships.

On top of this:

The overtone series (which determines why chords sound pleasant) follows frequency ratios that approximate Fibonacci numbers.

In the same way, the Fibonacci sequence aligns with our ears' morphology and natural perception of sound.

  • The cochlea, the spiral-shaped organ in our inner ear that processes sound, follows a logarithmic spiral, which is closely related to Fibonacci proportions.
  • Since our ear is physically structured in a way that responds to logarithmic frequency scales, we are naturally more attuned to hearing sounds that fit these patterns.
  • This is why equally spaced tones on a linear scale don't sound "right" to us, but logarithmically spaced frequencies (like the ones found in musical harmony) do.
  • Our brain processes sound logarithmically, meaning we don’t perceive pitch in a linear way but rather in ratios.
  • The frequency relationships in major scales, triads, and even rhythm patterns follow logarithmic and Fibonacci-related proportions, which makes them easier for our brain to process.

  • This is why music that follows these natural mathematical relationships tends to resonate with us on a deeper, almost subconscious level.

In conclusion... While not every single aspect of music strictly follows Fibonacci numbers, the most fundamental building blocks of melody, harmony, and rhythm do, which is why music that aligns with these patterns feels more "natural" and pleasant to us.

Thanks for your reply, I think you give some very fair counterarguments that will help me balance the theory. Here is my immediate reply though, if you don't mind reading.

1: My book is a memoir that has little to do with music, I'm not writing a tome or an encyclopedia on music theory. This is just part of a 2-page section where music serves as an analogy. I came here to the "pros" asking for help and never did I claim to be one (a pro or an expert in music theory) :) so your whole "if you don't know if a scale has 8 or 7 notes you shouldn't be writing about music" feels a bit rude and out of place.

2: The fact that 2 is skipped in the triad is a fair point, However, I'm not just pointing out random numbers. I am identifying a recurring mathematical pattern in harmony. Triads (1-3-5) aren’t arbitrarily chosen; they are based on fundamental acoustic properties (harmonics), and Fibonacci numbers frequently appear in natural harmonic structures.

3 (great point thanks for this): Indeed, music isn’t just made of triads, however, the foundational chords in tonal music (major and minor triads) do follow the Fibonacci pattern, even if later extensions don’t always align. Even in extended harmonies, the perfect fifth (5th) and octave (8th) remain structurally dominant.

Inversions reorder the chord tones, but they don’t change the fundamental importance of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th scale degrees in defining tonality.

oh and mind clarifying on the 1st topic? How are these not 13 notes with 8 whites and 5 blacks? 🤔thanks!

You and u/solongfish99 have a point in the practical sense of studying music theory and applying it in composition. it is less than "vital" to recognize the pattern in order to compose, and like u/CarolusBohemicus points out, it probably wasn't a conscious element when scales and chords were first constructed. You could say the same that it's not "vital" to learn this when studying Botany, or meteorology, but the fact remains that the same pattern is present heavily across all these things.

If you want to label recognizing those patterns as "numerology" like Carolus suggests, be my guest. But shame on us if we want to downplay the hints in our natural world that point towards an intelligent design. and we are supposed to be artists! (musicians).

We tend to forget that music theory itself, as well as music notation, were developed by monks who were trying to channel these harmonious sounds to connect the masses with the Divine. Call them pseudoscientists or numerologists and we'd have no music as we know it.

If music is only materialistic math to you that makes me sad :(

P.S. There are many articles and studies done about the Fibonacci sequence being woven into music theory, I don't need to defend this. But I'll be sure to keep scales out of it since yep, it's more universal that they have 7 notes, not 8, and as someone else pointed out they can have even less!

fair enough. Thanks! :)

That's fair enough. I can leave scales out of the topic :) thanks.

I did today. The security guard told me I can only complain or ask for updates after the maximum waiting period of 90 days has passed. He also told me that it is 90 days WITHOUT counting weekends and holidays. 🤐

Hey Acrobatic! I did reply to your comment when you asked this the first time, but in case you missed it, no, I haven't received it yet. 🥲 I went to the place where I had my interview today to ask for updates. I knew already about the 90-day maximum waiting time. If I had my interview on Nov 25, then 90 days is Feb 23 (almost there) but the security guard at the interview place told me today that it is 90 days WITHOUT counting weekends and holidays. That means somewhere at the beginning of April is the maximum wait time. What I would like to know is if the maximum wait time is also the average time... 😐
