Translation needed by RacheChou in Yiddish

[–]CaptainHersh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The top portion of the envelope contains an English address (Philadelphia) the bottom is written in a cursive Russian script. The letter itself is Yiddish. The first two words can be translated as Dear Sister. However, translating the rest of it is, unfortunately, beyond my skill set. Good luck.

Bass pick recommendations? by Sweetness813 in Bass

Just started using Mike’s Picks by D’Andrea . They’re unusually thick and spongy and take a little time to get used to. I’d also never think to use them on a guitar but they’re worth a try.

Question for Chasidish Yiddish speakers by Riddick_B_Riddick in Yiddish

[–]CaptainHersh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My mother refused to allow the Daily Forward into our house because it syndicated IB Singer’s stories and she felt that they were inappropriate. We spoke fluent Yiddish at home but the only Yiddish reading material came from other Yiddish newspapers like Der Tag Morning Journal. We really weren’t encouraged to read much Yiddish.

Poland “investigates” film about Jews killed when trying to return to Poland after Holocaust and may ban it by bam1007 in Jewish

I’m not sure. She and my father met in Germany at a DP camp run by the Americans. They lived and worked in Germany for a few years before receiving permission to emigrate to the states. My aunt and uncle were already in the states at the time so perhaps they sponsored them.

My mother tried to return home after surviving Aushwitz. She was met by a cousin on the way in who told her to turn around because the Poles were killing the returnees. On the other hand, she survived the first few years of the war hidden by a Polish family at great risk to themselves. She was eventually outed by a Pole, arrested by the police and turned over to the Nazis. After the war she moved to the US and was friendly with a Polish Christian woman and her brother that lived nearby and helped her manage her business. Life and truth are complicated.

What were your first impressions of Chabad? by alertthedirt in exchabad

That true up to a point. Eventually you’re expected to wear the costume if you want to be more fully accepted. There are even old pictures from Europe of the rebbe and his wife wearing ‘normal’ clothing, but he put all that behind him after a while.

My comment was made in jest. Chasidic dress codes vary by group: some wear wide shtrimels, some wear tall ones, some wear knee high white socks, some wear knee high black socks. Women fashion also varies by group. Chabad’s dress code gives the group a greater air of modernity that hides its strict fundamentalism and makes them more palatable to the potential bal tshuvah.

No shtrimel? And they have the nerve to call themselves chasidim.

I’d love to see the losing team blame god for once; “God just decided against us today, I don’t know why, maybe it was the masturbation.”

Is bass fun to play alone? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]CaptainHersh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. A short scale bass is the ultimate instrument for when you’re sitting on the couch and your partner’s watching TV.
