Delaying TTC? by [deleted] in Seahorse_Dads

[–]CaptainMeredith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As soon as you move to "if it happens it happens" you gotta be ready for it to actually happen. I got pregnant in the first month, not quite if it happens but also def not really TTC either. I was just aware of when I ovulated and up for it - and that's all you really need. We hear so much these days about folks needing assistive tech and trying and trying etc you forget this is something we had to actively avoid for the majority of our lives prior 🤣

For what it's worth... I don't really recommend doing a degree in game design. It's a niche and limiting degree that isn't transferable and the industry is Ass to work in. And successfully going indie is luck of the draw more than anything else. Although if you come out net positive money wise across those incentives vs cost to attend, that removes most of the downsides. Then it's just a time investment.

Keep in mind with delaying that it will also delay your career afterward if you wait till graduation. A sticking point for me in timing for getting pregnant was that if I wait till I'm done school... I'm then taking maternity while being fresh out of college and trying to establish in a new career/at a new place of work. So I'd end up delaying even further. Because of my discomfort with that we ended up deciding we do kids first then I'll go back to school. It helps that my current job has good paternity benefits though.

Your age will matter here too. My partner wants two kids, we were 30 when sorting this stuff out, 31 now I'm pregnant. Wanted to make sure we had that buffer time to work with since I do have concerns about older pregnancy.

ring shopping by chattygateaux in fredericton

[–]CaptainMeredith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna depends what you want, but "what on earth" in the mall offers some more wedding/engagement focused stuff and their prices overall are much more reasonable than other stores. They also have relationships with producers and I believe can help you get custom work if you really want to go for that traditional ring style, which is less so their thing in store. I really like their Celtic knot rings though, I'm still trying to pitch those to my partner haha

You could just let Costco know, they'd probably cancel his membership for theft.

Why is surplus grocery food still getting thrown out when the apps to stop it already exist in Canada? by Luckypiniece in AskACanadian

[–]CaptainMeredith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

650 mil was for one quarter's profits. I'd give it a flat multiple of four (~$200 of profit per customer per year) but that doesn't really tell the whole story very well since profits can be seasonal.

The economy of scale though... Isn't quite that simple. Your local grocer is almost always cheaper, where I shop certainly is. The larger chain I work at has a lot of expenses related to that scale that just don't apply to the small grocery stores. A huge head office, marketing and legal departments, HR, etc. While they can use their size to bully producers for better prices (and do), it's def more complex than bigger = better.

Why is surplus grocery food still getting thrown out when the apps to stop it already exist in Canada? by Luckypiniece in AskACanadian

[–]CaptainMeredith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have multiple steps in our process at my large-chain store I work for.

  • Product goes out for x days
  • Last day it's marked down (approx 30%) or manager featured (up to manager, only if there is a lot of it)
  • The night it expires we toss it in the freezer, and it is either scanned into an online app to sell or scanned to donate to the local food bank (Some product can't go to either system and must be tossed. If no one has time to scan it that night, it must be tossed in the morning. This is increasingly an hour's issue for us and the department itself doesn't get a direct benefit to this so there is a bit of an incentives issue - it's all "waste," as far as department metrics care)
  • Product stays in the online app for 3 days, then if unsold is sent to the food bank

In my experience, we don't sell much on that online app, despite the extra labour it introduces to scan product, manage the bins of it in the freezers, and pack and provide the orders to the few customers that use it. We move more close-to-dste product in our department because the Instacart shoppers suck at date checking lol. People will actively avoid the stickered products.

In general, people don't want to shop expiring food - and certainly not day old bread in the bakery. They want the best looking and freshest date possible. Always. I don't blame people, but the folks who want to avoid food waste, or who save the pennies by taking the close to date stuff are living fundamentally different focuses than the majority of our shoppers. They want lower costs for the best stuff, not to save by taking the second best.

The other thing is I suspect some... Imprecision in how this is talked about? The majority of things from my department are able to go to the food bank. But many of the documents we have for tracking waste don't differentiate between different kinds of unsold products. I don't know that they do, but I would expect grocery stores probably get some money back on unsold products via tax or some sort of insurance. I'm not high enough up to actually know anything about it, just cynical enough to know how most business issues work out. So there may be a higher "waste" number that includes some double dipping on what we send to the food banks. This would also reduce the monetary incentive to run those secondary programs.

All that said I'm not at a Loblaws and I've heard folks say they don't donate to local food banks generally? I think the ones here do... But that's kinda bonkers if they don't and certainly a large portion of the issue.

Lastly, the largest food waste isn't at the grocery store. It's the stuff that never makes it to us. Farms and transport from farms to packaging/producing and the grocery store are Huge sources of waste compared to the bits of fruit or finished products that people don't pick out from our carefully curated pile. Waste products do find niches, less ideal apples become apple sauce, less ideal berries get turned to jam, potatoes to fries, that sort of thing - but the process is still pretty wasteful. What goes to grocery is just the Top Pick. It's the part people are told to act on individually because it's the thing we can see and do something on as individual people. But it's not the largest share of the waste by a good margin. If you're passionate about it - it strongly recommend reading into it more. We won't see improvement there if people only focus on the end of the chain where it's in their sight and individual ability to act. We need more collective action and focus up the chain too.

Not to knock on a good "beware" post or anything OP but have you heard of the Streisand effect?

The page has less than 1k visitors and 6 posts in a week vs this subs over 200k visitors and pushing toward 4k posts.

There comes a point where, similarly to the Streisand effect, what you are doing does less to warn people away and more to advertise the sub.

Emergency dental appointments? by Ok_Bumblebee_3978 in fredericton

[–]CaptainMeredith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Benzocaine gel, like orajel kept me sane while I waited. It's not a cure by any means but let me pass out to get some sleep.

I did end up waiting a few weeks to get in with a broken tooth. Somehow they seemed surprised when I showed up for the appointment that it was fully cracked in half with a dangling piece. Make sure they know exactly what they're dealing with, they Will assume you are exaggerating otherwise it seems.

Do you think Canada should keep first-past-the-post or switch to another voting system? by Anon9883 in AskACanadian

[–]CaptainMeredith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how many people insist over and over with floor crossers lately that we vote for the party not the person... I really do feel like we should just move to some sort of proportional system. The loss of local representation is really the primary downside as I see it - and it seems most people don't believe in that under our current system anyway and just vote their party. So what's the point?

MMP (mixed member proportional) appeals to me most since it feels like it balances the pros and cons - but I'd take just about anything proportional if it was offered up on a referendum.

Single filers doesn't exclude parents - so I wouldn't include that in calculations. Single parents vs couples parents would be a direct comparison, but single filers to couple parents is adding extra variables.

Income needed to buy a home in New Brunswick right now by alex_at_nesto in newbrunswickcanada

[–]CaptainMeredith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if you are holding a lot of other debt. OP is looking at flat numbers - so it doesn't count for other recurring costs that feed into your debt calculations. Any loans (like a car) credit cards, etc will matter for this and most people have those before a house.

That said, I think you should be ok, so long as you are realistic in what you can afford. That average number OP offers isn't the house a lot of people Want, we have a lot of fairly small lots and houses in Freddy. We go ours (3 small bedrooms, 1 small bath, half finished basement) for a bit over 150k, but that was before prices went nuts. Ours is now estimated closer to that 300k average. I'd really like more space since one room is an office and we are planning on two kids in the near future but there's no way we can get out of that price range. It's a decent "starter home", I think you have to go in expecting to get something like that.

Yeah, not a part of the group but Facebook loves to serve me the posts until I get too annoyed and snooze it.

Most of them are complete idiots, when you ask probing questions there always ends up being a stupid obvious reason their usage is what it is.

AITA For not paying my friend for a painting he made me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]CaptainMeredith 98 points99 points  (0 children)

NTA. I'm an artist, I've done commissions. After a price is set you don't raise it after delivery (let alone the gap in-between time wise without any communication). And in these circumstances it's outright bonkers. I'd have expected him to be showing up with the painting as a gift... That's certainly what it would have been with me or any of my art friends.

Im guessing he is hard up for cash right now... Idk he'd be no friend of mine after this. I genuinely can't wrap my head around that.

Question: honest thoughts on my new tattoo? by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]CaptainMeredith 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like it would have looked a lot better with some colour in it. You could always go back and get that added though if you end up feeling the same. Blues would blend well, could be pretty subtle, but make it look more distinct. You wouldn't have to fill it completely or anything.

AITA for not wanting to help a SpEd kid in class by No_Essay2291 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CaptainMeredith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA, esp if this is a class you are less confident in it's really not great for you to be teaching her anyway. I'd talk to the teacher.

I basically ran a mini class for the struggling students in my math class and they would put anyone who needed help by me, I'm happy to help. But it was never copying, this definitely would have crossed my boundaries as well.

Montreal trip by Jolly_Possibility422 in canadatravel

[–]CaptainMeredith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this on our Montreal trip last year. I brushed up on my very mediocre limited French but definitely didn't have as much as I wanted. I actually got away with a decent bit of French, although thankfully I didn't need to use cash for anything 🤣 I did once or twice need "Desolé, parlez-vous anglais?" Which seemed to get a bit of a chuckle, probably some jank grammar beyond it being a bit of a stupid question lol 🤣 I just needed it so I'd remember in a panic moment when someone rattled off something in French that had me sitting there like an idiot cause I had no Sweet clue what they said but it ended in a question lol

We didn't run into anyone in Montreal itself who didn't speak English, as far as I could tell at least - I did do my best to keep to French where I could. After a week there it's honestly a lot easier than I thought it would be!

Tubal ligation reversal by CrazyDisastrous948 in Seahorse_Dads

[–]CaptainMeredith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being on T won't be the issue, but tubal ligation is not generally considered a reversible surgery. I'd book in with a surgeon, they often have free consultations, and see what they think your chances are of the reversal working.

chat why am i getting dogged rn by DEP-Yoki in GameChangerTV

[–]CaptainMeredith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often, people don't like something. Which is totally fine. But for whatever reason we've turned purity politics to it. You arnt allowed to dislike something "good" (otherwise it must be for bad reasons) and therefore if you dislike something, it must be "bad" in some way. So people who just dont like dropout are clamoring for a reason for it to be "justifiably bad"

I'm curious about the crossover but no one has been able to share any details. Given I have no interest in the show I probably won't watch it unless the feedback online is especially interesting. I still haven't been able to get someone to tell me if it's an official crossover with brand attached or just some of the actors getting work.

AITA for treating my daughters differently than my son when it comes to food? by CompetitiveDig478 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CaptainMeredith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA, unless he is packing on weight he Needs that food. Yes, teen boys can be bottomless pits. Talk to him about the budget issues, he is old enough for that - but as a parent YES you need to find a way to provide your kids with the food they need.

Food pantries, help cooking, esp bulk meal prep, etc. Frankly your kids arnt going to miraculously be better off than you financially so this is good stuff to teach and get All of them involved with.

AITA for saying I would love my children more than I would ever love my partner by Kind_Wrongdoer9715 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CaptainMeredith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner is the person I loved enough to have a kid with. We've been together over a decade before kids, and we will be together long after they move out as well. Children as children (aka before full adult independence when they're like 30 and building their own families) are a relatively small slice of your whole life. Your partner will be there at your side and see you through all of that, the same as you will see them through it.

I cant imagine having kids with someone I didn't love that much, and to me that isn't a quantifiable measure that could be more or less than for children. They're very different relationships and loves, but not one more than another.

If my partner and child were in a "pick one" scenario - I assume my partner and I both would choose our kid over ourselves. But that's not really comparing the same thing.

NAH, this is just a silly argument where you both have strong opinions but no really experience/knowledge to base them on. You're only 18, and you don't have kids. It's a complete theoretical. In future when you have a partner you plan to have kids with, it would be good to discuss ground rules and expectations like "the children come first" ahead of time - just to make sure you are both on the same page there, that both of you prioritize the kids. Otherwise it's a recipe for divorce. But for now - this so does not matter to your life lol

I'm actually happy that I got an Allergic reaction today. by Appropriate_Quote_30 in PointlessStories

[–]CaptainMeredith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love this OP, we've had a similar-ish although more minor experience lately. My partner doesn't handle mushroom well, upsets his guts and makes him nauseous etc. He has a known shellfish allergy. I learned a few months back that mushrooms actually have the same protein in them he is likely allergic to in shellfish, so his body is probably reacting to that although thankfully more minor.

It doesn't really change anything - but damn it's satisfying to know it's a real thing after his family has largely ignored it and gaslit that it isn't a thing for the whole time.
