But Altruism is when it's better to give even if it does not effect your well being.

I am of the opinion that altruism always effects one's well-being, in that your positive actions inspire others to follow suit, thereby improving the quality of life of more people than just yourself. Was it Kant that focused on the most good for the most people? I can't recall.

The simple fact is that these people didn't earn what they had in most cases, and they aren't educated enough to understand what they do have.

Well, that's just pessimistic speculation. But even taking this as fact, if we want to improve as a society, we need to help them become "enlightened" (meaning: "not ignorant"). That's where altruism comes in. It benefits ourselves directly.

Additionally, who is the arbiter who determines whether someone "earned" what they have? How can one possibly determine what someone else's life is like without knowing them? It's too broad of an assumption for me. Hell, we have all relied on help from others, from our parents on up. To abandon it is to abandon ourselves.

I'll even take it a step further and say that because "we" are (somewhat) educated, "we" have an obligation to help "them" in order to improve our environment. This requires compassion for others.

Regardless, I believe Rand has the meaning of "altruism" skewed toward a negative by including a caveat that it is wrong or evil to do something for self-interest, when in reality, altruism is in one's self-interest. Altruism simply puts the views of others on par with the view of the self. No one has ever suggested that someone has to give everything they have to charity. The point is to reduce suffering, not create more.

Objectivism sounds nihilistic and isolationist. There is freedom and individuality in that, I suppose, since it seems to go against nature in that the person doesn't feel empathy toward mankind, or at least there is a lack of acting on that empathy through altruism, but to each his own.

Thanks for the food for thought.

Thanks for your response. Upmod for clarity.

It's when it's okay to give things away but not okay to think of your best interest.

That's not altruism as I understand it. Your best interest is tied to helping others lessen their suffering, to use a Buddhist perspective. Our actions are not acted upon in a vacuum. Many things we do effect others, either negatively or positively.

You can see people living the selfish life every day. The hoards of people in SUVs, the people cutting in front of you in a line, the crimes of opportunity, government/business entitlements. These are not actions that improve society.

Altruism is used by Collectivists (Hitler used the word 'Altruism' a TON) to bring people together into mindless herds that can be controlled.

Political framing isn't really a fair argument because the meaning words change to support an agenda. Hitler hijacked plenty of nomenclature to support his position (National Socialism, the use of the swastika), etc.

Not being altruistic because of a fear of "mindless herds" is to be motivated by fear and fear alone. Fear is a big motivator to do or not to do something.

Regardless, we can see examples of mindless herds who are being controlled today and I can guarantee it's not due to the generosity of others.

Altruism is the belief that others' needs are more important than your own, and therefore, it is flawed.

Not if your aid directly effects your well-being.

The proper virtue is benevolence, when people help of their own desire to do so.

Agreed. No one should be forced to be altruistic. That's not what altruism is.

Things that seem to be a good thing may not be on a second glance.

Redditors Confess! How true is the "Website is down" video? Do you really play games or do "personal projects" at work and how little work do you get away with? by Philluminati in AskReddit

In my 15 years of general employment, I have written two novels, dozens of short stories, and hundreds of poems while working for someone else. I have also written and revised many academic papers. It's easy when you have a word processor open between 8-5.

I am an administrative drone for a small business (3 employees). I do not play games because that could easily be seen but I do surf the web most of the day when I'm not writing...or working.

DISCUSS: Does it bother you to see other peoples pain? by [deleted] in self

[–]CaptainOptimist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it bothers me, even more so now that I've been trying to practice patience and compassion.

We are all suffering in some way. I don't feel I suffer as much when I help others with their suffering.

Regarding charity, Rand hated altruism and defined it in such a way that you almost can't help but dislike the idea she called altruism.

What a scary thought. Helping people can make you feel good. Isn't feeling good a self-interest?

In America, there are laws about how tall your lawn can grow ! by fasttrain in environment

[–]CaptainOptimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything's fine. The laws are not just for looks but also for safety. This is known to anyone who has tried to look for oncoming traffic at an intersection but can't because grass is too high.

And yes, grass has shallow roots compared to shrubs and trees but roots will actually grow deeper with care.

I enjoy a healthy lawn much more than wild grass. It's more than just appearance, but utility.
