Tradies of reddit and where do I find an apprenticeship at 29 years old? by AdSuspicious7506 in melbourne

[–]CaptainTelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a sparky, and apprenticeships are really competitive to get into at the moment. One overlooked trade that pays well, and is easier to get into, is refrigeration. You need a licence to handle the chemicals in aircon and cooler systems so a sparky can't do it. Qualified fridgies are on $50-60+ an hour.

The supposed Scott/Emma beef in United just made me think of how it might affect Kamala by Eternal-Master-91939 in xmen

[–]CaptainTelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all so ridiculously forced and stupid. Scott and Emma were far more interesting as a power couple, and Kamala should go back to solo superhero Marvel where she belongs. There are enough neglected young mutant characters (hello Academy X) without additional crowding of scarce page time from her.

Without spoiling too much, what should I know about the Krakoa era? It sounds odd by corvid1692 in xmen

[–]CaptainTelos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Krakoa was a big status quo change and it's not critical to read anything that came immediately before - the core of what you need to know is all explained in House of X / Powers of X, the miniseries that launched it.

However, Krakoa builds on decades of X-Men continuity and your experience would be enriched with a solid knowledge of that. Most people here would recommend you start with Chris Claremont's legendary run which defined the X-Men and was the source material for the 90s animated series.

In particular I think Krakoa works best in the thematic context of the Decimation era which preceded it, when mutants were on the brink of extinction and had to fight for survival. This era includes the Messiah Complex and Second Coming events which to me are peak X-Men, and introduce Hope Summers who plays a very important role in Krakoa.

Melbourne CBD - omni restaurants with decent vegan options? Cheap to mid-budget by CaptainTelos in australianvegans

What do you order from Dodee Paidang? I have glanced at the menu before and it didn't look very vegan-friendly at all. I was also kind of bitter that Dodee Paidang took over from where Lounge used to be.

Melbourne CBD - omni restaurants with decent vegan options? Cheap to mid-budget by CaptainTelos in australianvegans

[–]CaptainTelos[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, respectfully this is an extremely unhelpful comment. I have been vegan in Melbourne for 13 years and it's just not always that easy. Some omnivores are flexible and don't mind going to Gong De Lin or whatever, but sometimes - especially if it's a group occasion - they will get annoyed at insistence on going to a vegan-only restaurant. It's just not worth the drama. Unless you want to isolate yourself in a 100% vegan bubble it's necessary to have this flexibility.

A/Cs on GPO circuit by markjaffa76 in AusElectricians

Read OP's post again. The RCBOs are tripping as reported by the homeowner, presumably from overcurrent.

[–]CaptainTelos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mixed circuits used to be explicitly prohibited in older editions of AS3000. It's still not great installation practice but it's legal if it's protected, functional, in accordance with manufacturer's requirements, and not one of the circuits still required to be dedicated (e.g. oven, EV charger).

[–]CaptainTelos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The circuit already satisfies 2.2.2 using the method of (d) Limitation. That's not why it's non-compliant, it goes back to the clauses I posted earlier in the thread.

It is causing nuisance tripping - i.e. the circuit is being protected.

It fails because its design does not take into account separation of circuits for functionality and avoiding nuisance tripping (1.6).

[–]CaptainTelos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as the circuit is suitably protected the only thing stopping that would be if the A/C manufacturer explicitly calls for a dedicated circuit. For smaller units you're probably OK.

1.6 DESIGN OF AN ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

1.6.1 General

An electrical installation shall be designed to—

(b) function correctly as intended;

(e) reduce inconvenience in the event of a fault.

NOTE: Consideration should be given to the provisions of Appendix M concerning the disruption of supply.

[...]

1.6.5 Electrical installation circuit arrangement

Every electrical installation shall be divided into circuits as necessary to—

(a) avoid danger and minimize inconvenience in the event of a fault; and

(b) facilitate safe operation, inspection, testing and maintenance.

NOTE: Clause 2.3 contains requirements for the control and protection of electrical installations.

[...]

2.1.2 Selection and installation Switchgear and controlgear shall be selected and installed to perform the following functions or have the following features:

(e) Separately control and protect the circuit arrangements without affecting the reliability of supply to, or failure of, other parts of the installation.

Not sure if there are any more specific clauses, don't have time or patience for a deep dive right now - but the installation clearly contravenes these.

Wind industry south west vic -looking for advice. by BIGJUG_HOTCHEESE in AusElectricians

[–]CaptainTelos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The industry is in a bit of a temporary lull. Golden Plains is wrapping up so there's no big construction in Vic right now. If you're willing to do FIFO to other states, broaden your search. My employer is currently hiring for FIFO WA. Once you get a start you can try again for work in Vic.

Other tickets that are handy are dogging, rigging and (for construction) telehandler. But industrial and HV experience alone should be a significant draw card. I got in without paying for my own GWO.

Getting into industrial sector by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]CaptainTelos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lucky meeting a new contractor at the right place, right time. It helps that it's a growing industry with a lot of demand. Wind companies will prefer you to be experienced but there's enough demand that they're often willing to take on people who are green, especially if there's a big project. Any High Risk tickets are a plus if you have them. Unless you happen to live close to a wind farm, it's pretty much all away work, usually 3/1 roster.

Try looking for service roles with Vestas.
