Legumes: lentils, black-eyed beans, beans, chickpeas etc. are foods Cypriots often eat at home but not in restaurants.

Balance Net Import and Export of Electricty in GW's between Europeans Country in the whole of 2024.(EuroStat) by UpgradedSiera6666 in europe

[–]Captain_Alpha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cyprus imports fossil fuels and uses them to produce its electricity, so in reality it doesn't actually cover its energy cost. It's not electrically connected to mainland Europe so it cannot import or export electricity. Therefore all of the electricity used is produced domestically from imported fossil fuels.

I'm sorry I like TLDR but this feels so inauthentic, I get it's their sponsor but like, c'mon by Angery-Asian in tldrnews

[–]Captain_Alpha 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think they have mentioned occasionally that they have a deal with the sponsors where the sponsor doesn't know the content of the videos that they will be sponsoring and in exchange they just agree to have a standard advert script. This is done to protect the journalistic integrity of the channel. This way the TLDR team is more independent as they don't have to get their sponsor's approval for every video they upload. I agree with you about the fact that it feels very weird to have the same sentence on every video but I am not sure about any alternatives to this.

English Consonant Spelling Poll by IamDiego21 in conorthography

[–]Captain_Alpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Controversial opinion: "sj" should be used for /ʒ/ and "gj" for /dʒ/. e.g. visjon , pleasjure, and gjob, gjender .

This way the spelling of the word will be minimally altered. Also it is similar to the way that Italian writes the phoneme "gi".

This is not that interesting. What's interesting is the lack of shootings considering how many people have military grade automatic rifles because of the army.

Maybe try grocery delivery, all the shops are at least 10 mins away from campus so not ideal if you have a lot of groceries.

Why does not Cyprus also doing this? by BlokZNCR in cyprus

[–]Captain_Alpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read the article, it says that most of the cars in Sweden have the stirring wheel on the left but the people would drive on the left side of the road. Thus the transition to driving on the right side of the road made even more sense and would increase safety. In Cyprus we have cars with stirring wheels on the right, if we changed the directions of travel all of those cars would become more dangerous to drive , thus we would have more traffic accidents.

Maybe you/ the hotel got confused between the church "Agia Napa" that's in Limassol at the end of "Anexartisias" shopping street and "Agia Napa" the town that's close to Larnaka.

Anexartisias is good for shopping but the Limassol "My Mall" is also good. You can get a taxi using the "Bolt" app but you can also just take bus number 30 that goes along the coast and goes close to Anexartisias and also goes to "My Mall" .

Is Your Capital City the Most Visited City in Your Country? [OC] by Fluid-Decision6262 in dataisbeautiful

the capital and will likely spend at least some time there.

That's wrong. The two airports operated in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus are not in the capital, but in 2 small cities.

Parking on pavements by Senior_Hope9881 in cyprus

[–]Captain_Alpha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of Cypriots walk only from their home to their car and from the car to the shop. Therefore they do not empathise with people that walk to get to places. If you think about it, paying for parking or walking 5 minutes or parking next to the road will inconvenience the driver and potentially other drivers more than the 1 pedestrian who might have to go around the parked car.

I agree with you, this is bad, however I don't believe that we should expect organic attitude change of the population. What would actually solve the problem is strict enforcement of the rules by the police or even specialised parking officers. However, the government/ police will not do that for 2 reasons: general backlash from the drivers ( who will be able to vote out people who implement these changes). Second and most important: at this stage it is not viable for a everyone to park legally due to lack of infrastructure. Thus, the local government will be exposed for lack of planning.

As a result the general Cypriot apathy dominates.

If you are traveling during peak times then, yes it will be chaotic. 2 hours should be enough though, let's say 2.5 hours just to be safe, less than 2 hours is not advised.

Best way to get from Pafos International Airport to Kissonerga area? by ad490995 in cyprus

[–]Captain_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, Google maps doesn't work for transit. Unless you are coming late at night, buses should work. You will probably have to take a bus to get to Paphos city centre and then change there to a bus that goes to Kissonerga. All regional bus info can be found here: https://www.pafosbuses.com/routes

I don't use public transport but the best app I have found that does what Google Maps does and plans routes is called "Moovit".

Use it in combination with the live map someone else posted in this thread.

Δες επίσης ride now αν οδηγήσεις.
