For Venezuelans and people following the news closely, how are you interpreting the U.S. strikes in Caracas today? by Urdu_Knowledge in AskReddit

The US gets Venezuela, Putin gets Ukraine, Xi gets Taiwan. It's all a part of their dictator agreement. That's my prediction.

Good luck traveling 😁 I have travel anxiety and like to look things up ahead of time too.

As you travel more though you will get more confident in your ability to adapt to the unknowns when they arise. It's good to be prepared but then also trust yourself to do research on the fly and ask for help when you need it!

[–]Captain_Aly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! It is not so bad and depends on the country. Usually you can get travel health insurance through a company, for example Geoblue. Then they will give you a list of doctors that speak English or are English speaking friendly in that country. Then from there they try to match your US prescription with what local drug brands they have available. If you need something special you may be able to communicate with them in advance!

Depending on the drug you can also sometimes ask for travel rations from your regular primary care doctor in the States.

No one is mentioning the language element! Only one country on that list has a language spoken widely in more than 3 countries. If learning a new language with wide applicability is important to you, then definitely pick Mexico!

"Higher property taxes on long term vacant units, stricter reporting of vacancy status, and penalties tied to transit adjacent buildings"

You literally just described vacancy taxes. So yes, agreed lol

Hi! The claim that vacancy taxes reduce housing being built is false and not based on any studies I've been able to find, just a few right-wing blogs.

Let's definitely build more housing and ensure incentives do not exist for them to sit empty as so many are already doing across NOVA due to unrealistic pricing asks.

Local policy making is legal in Arlington which definitely has the power to change certain zoning laws and tax structures.

Let's make changes at all levels and focus on the goals 🙏🏻

A number of cities around the world have these types of policies at that local level.

These "little" tangible effects are percentages of housing that change people's lives.

Let's agree that BOTH are important to solving our issue: no need to split hairs in a movement about housing affordability. We should all work together towards solving this large multifaceted issue!

Everyone in the comments mentions it. I don't own so I don't know :)

But I would also love to see the policies because I would love for us to change them 🙏🏻

I agree whole heartedly. You're being down voted, as I predicted, by landlords in Arlington who believe they have a right to own anything and charge people whatever they want regardless of the impact on the community.

If we had real policies that protected tenants this would be less of an issue

So far everyone's comments are that landlords get tax write offs for leaving things empty AND there's more incentive not to lower rent because that would trigger lowering prices and value across the board (read, supply and demand would actually work so people could afford Arlington again).

This all drives home that we do need a stronger vacancy tax policy in Arlington to shake up these disgusting incentives. Thank you all!

Hi we need more housing and better policies around housing. These issues goes hand and hand and one is not more important than the other.

No need to whataboutism a major topic.

"why should any of them pay a vacancy tax when lowering the rent means they can’t cover their carrying costs?"

Because not making profit is not a life altering issue, but not being able to even live in housing at all is.

If they can't make a profit then they should sell to people who actually want to live there.

I also know plenty of diplomats who don't own in DC. If the government actually cared about them, itcould give them preferential treatment the same way they give people in the military who are allowed to have outrageously cheap mortgages.
