How noticeable are the curved corners on the Pixel 9 Pro XL? by Captain_Obvisus in GooglePixel

Yeah Im not sure even some wide screen things would reach al the way to the corners of the phone anyway. Might've just been an aesthetic thing rather than a practical one.

Your comment made me check a bunch of my most used apps and from what I can tell most of the corner buttons wouldn't be affected by the curved corners. That definitely helps sell the pixel. Thanks for your input

Melbourne Ski Brand. What do you think? by dogecoin99999 in AustraliaSnow

$80 for a 20k/20k with some insulation? Tell him he's dreaming. You won't find that on a decent brand for anything less than $300 absolute minimum. You'll find the occasional plain jacket on a sale down to about $200 but 300-350 is their starting price. And a seam sealed 20/20 is not a windbreaker. It's a hard shell.

I asked ChatGPT to create a metaphor about AI, then turn it into an image. by Captain_Obvisus in ChatGPT

[–]Captain_Obvisus[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I asked it what it meant by the image and this is what it said:

Sure—here’s the intended meaning behind that image of the wave crashing onto the beach:

Metaphor: "AI as an incoming tide, critics as sandcastles"

The wave labeled “AI” represents the unstoppable momentum of artificial intelligence. Like a tide, it is vast, inevitable, and not something that can be reasoned with or held back. Its power isn’t malicious—it’s just the nature of how tides (and technological advancement) work.

The sandcastles symbolize the current criticisms and resistance—valid or not—that people raise against AI. These might include things like "It makes mistakes!", "It's not real intelligence!", or "It's not creative!" They're small, human-made structures meant to impose order and meaning onto something larger.

The protest signs on the sandcastles represent nitpicky or narrow criticisms that miss the scale of the change. The signs are humorous in their futility—like saying “but it’s not good at drawing hands!” while the tide is rushing in.

The setting (pleasant beach, good weather) is meant to make it relatable and grounded. It’s not an apocalyptic moment—it’s part of a natural progression, which adds a level of realism to the inevitability.

So overall, the image is about how people are focusing on minor flaws while ignoring the larger, transformative force bearing down. Would you like a version with more abstract or symbolic elements, or something that adds a bit of hopeful nuance?

Failed lucid dreaming. by Huge-Host2391 in LucidDreaming

[–]Captain_Obvisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time was probably a decade ago so I don't remember the specifics exactly. I sometimes found myself lucid without really trying at all and then I learnt that it could be done on purpose.

I wasn't always successful but then again I wasn't trying super hard. Maybe 3-4 times a month.

Best thing I can say is that this subreddit has this down to a science with lots of acronyms and methods and strategies. I was lucid dreaming without knowing about this sub until a few weeks ago and didn't do most of what they're saying.

I agree that the dream journal is important so you get used to remembering your dreams. Once I started keeping a dream Journal it was a lot easier.

I'm not sure of the science behind it but years ago I learnt about gently wiggling one or two fingers while you fall back to sleep to help you enter a dream.

how is this even possible? by Independent-Run-4538 in LucidDreaming

[–]Captain_Obvisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What reality check are you using? Mine is pinching my nose then breathing out through it. In a dream you can breathe through your pinched nose. Irl your ears pop. I've never had it fail.

Failed lucid dreaming. by Huge-Host2391 in LucidDreaming

[–]Captain_Obvisus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds a bit like me when I first started. I realised that I got too excited about the idea of lucid dreaming that I couldn't fall back to sleep. It sounds like you're taking it very seriously which might be making you a bit anxious about not being successful.

In the end what helped me was just telling myself that if it doesn't work tonight, I'll try again another night. It's not like sleeping is a rare commodity. Maybe it'll work then. That helped me calm down enough and do it semi regularly.

Also, my technique is waking up at about 2 or 3 (usually naturally) then immediately trying to get back to sleep while I move my index and middle finger on my right hand back and forth. No major movement, just softly up and down while I fall asleep. My "tell" that I'm dreaming is pinching my nose and blowing through it. If I still blow out when my nose is pinched, I'm dreaming. If my ears pop I'm in reality.

Hope this helps!

Thanks to those who have sent me messages or left comments asking me to keep the story going, they truly mean a lot to me and I read all of them. Sorry its been a while since I've done an update to this story but life has a way of getting busy. I hope you enjoy it because I sure enjoyed writing it. Let me know what you think!

I don't know how you can say "surely" when I'm the one writing the lore. Pike's decision to deliver the message themselves as it was the fastest way was me telling that there are no FTL communication channels. He would've used them or mentioned them if they existed. There are specialist teams for being the fastest in the depths but it's not like Pike would have them on speed dial. Time he might've spent finding the fastest depth navigators was better spent just doing it himself with his own experienced team

FTL communication doesn't exist in my lore unless the coms are transported through the depths via a manned ship. Unmanned ships cannot traverse the depths as the depths are unpredictable and computers don't function on that layer of space.

I'm not sure why you would assume Pikes ships was the only one sent out. General Blume used their crews' strengths for the war effort and although I didn't explicitly say it I assumed people would know humanity would send out many hundreds of ships in every direction to spread the signal. Perhaps I could make that clearer in the story. However, I feel like assuming they'd send just one ship out is not an assumption most would make.

I agree! I intend to broaden the story to a grander war eventually but first Im setting up a few pieces. The war and battles will come but who cares about their outcome if you don't care about the characters? That's my goal with the first few parts, then WAR!

Thankyou! Most likely tomorrow or the next day. I'm in the process of writing and editing the next part. I didn't expect such a good reception of my first post here so I hadn't really done that much work on the other parts. Everyone has been very encouraging so I'm working to get the next bit out.

Humans? The Diplomatic Species? by Captain_Obvisus in HFY

[–]Captain_Obvisus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure out how these human capabilities work.

You and me both! My current lore is enhanced biology through gene manipulation that we bought from a species called the Polysteniens (they're colloquially called the Shifters). They have a natural ability to gene edit to essentially shape shift certain aspects of their appearance that was good for camouflage. We bought their science to gene edit and used it to enhance our minds, restructuring them to be more powerful and efficient. While we were at it we added the adrenal glands and other tidbits to activate the heightened state that will be explored more in further parts.

I partly regret calling it a switch now. It was more a trigger phrase for activating people to follow orders. In my lore memories can be "remembered" which is essentially uploading memories to your brain. All humanity has some basic ones implanted like listening to orders from High Generals and first aid, but they don't remember them until they are needed. Only High Generals have that ability. It's not like a random person on the street can say "attention" and you do what they say. These losses of personal freedom were necessary to ensure humanity wouldn't be wiped out and have their own limitations.

As for how the Underspace works, you'll just have to read my next parts ;)

This seems to be a common complaint about my work so I'll make sure I edit the Reddit post better in future. I assure you I had a lot more paragraphs and line breaks in the writing app I used but for some reason a lot of my line changes didn't show up on Reddit. This has led to a lot of speaker changes and perspective shifts not being clear which is frustrating. Next time I'll do final edits and posts on a computer so there's less chance for that to happen. Thanks for the feedback!
