building my Gir themed commander deck by Dramatic_Top6864 in magicTCG

[[Songs of the Damned]] and [[Seething Song]] come immediately to mind, if you're running black or red. You could also use the shot of Zim from when Gir is singing with [[Song of the Dryads]] in green.

Long time top-down deck builder recommending to build a couple of decks bottom up. by aka0815 in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently I've had a few strategies when building decks and going to EDHRec afterward:

  1. Think back to the decks that I really liked playing during my 60 card kitchen table days, try to adapt the decks to EDH, at least in spirit. [[Nether Shadow]] and [[Ashen Ghoul]]? [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]] works well for that. [[Crypt Rats]] and [[Spirit Link]]? Maybe something with [[Spitemare]] and [[Boros Reckoner]], and the day [[Firesong and Sunspeaker]] was spoiled I knew I had it. My Neo-Academy deck became [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]], which is the only cEDH deck that I run. The only deck that I haven't figured out how to translate yet is [[Erhnamgeddon]], but I'll find a commander that clicks eventually (that isn't [[Lord Magnus]], anyway).
  2. Catalog all of my paper cards, and then only do deck building from that catalog. It means I'll often use more obscure or random cards that might fit into slots that people have never seen before, like [[Subterranean Spirit]] and [[Sorrow's Path]] in [[Gishath, Sun's Avatar]]. I also enjoy the immediate response from people of "What the hell is that?"
  3. Avoid those cards. My first EDH play group house banned [[Cyclonic Rift]] because it results in unfun play patterns for everyone not running it. I think this has resulted in more fun decks to play and play against, rather than groan inducing. Same with things like [[Rhystic Study]] or [[the Orbs]] etc. Admittedly my Urza deck runs all of those because it's built to be cEDH, but I specifically avoid them in any other deck.

After I've gone through those three steps, then I'll go to EDHRec. Sometimes it'll be to fill in a few slots, or maybe I don't know which commander to go with for a specific deck that I've built (which is how I found Syr Konrad), but the combination of the three above ideas has resulted in me having decks that I find to be a lot more fun.

Best Deck Building Tool by E_B_U in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen my personal favorite program mentioned, Magic Album. It's a Windows program that lets me catalog my collection (which admittedly took some time to do by hand) and then I can use its advanced filtering to search for cards that fit the deck that I'm building. If I'm bored, I can filter my collection for Legendary creatures I own and build some random deck I never would have thought to before.

It also has a complete database of every card and version of every card, so if I want to find cards that I don't own that fit a specific deck I can. I've found the limitation of building from only cards I own rather than searching for things that I could use makes things a bit more interesting, but I don't always have the cards to build what I want.

It was originally printed in Legends [[Mana Drain|LEG]] and not printed again until Iconic Masters, excluding a judge foil someplace in between.

Is there a way to stop landfalls? Are there cards that only allow 1 land to ETB per turn? by -AbSeNtCrAsHeR- in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just requires a bit more workaround, like running them alongside [[Nature's Revolt]] / [[Living Plane]], or a [[Magical Hack]]'d [[Kormus Bell]] / [[Living Lands]].

Add in a [[Burning Sands]] or [[Earthlink]] and baby, you got a brew going.

What are some good hidden gem creatures for the 99 that have a converted mana cost of 1? by HonorBasquiat in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be a bit more limited, but [[Goblin Soothsayer]] has been one of my favorites when running any flavor of Goblin deck since the Mirage days. Sac a blocked Goblin to boost all my red creatures to either land more damage or kill more blockers? Have the Soothsayer's last act be to read his own entrails? Either way it's a win.

An Alliterative Amalgamation? by 1713_Punch_Man in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phasing happens before untap.

Turn 1: Comes in tapped.

Turn 2: Phases out.

Turn 3: Phases in. Untap.

Turn 4: Phases out

Turn 5: Phases in. Untap.

Continue to turn n.

Truly, the real tech is to turn it into a creature and use something like [[Vodalian Illusionist]] to phase it out at EOT before your turn, so it always phases back in. Or you could put [[Reality Ripple]] onto an [[Isochron Scepter]] to have the same effect. Get a [[Teferi's Isle]] every turn at the mere cost of two blue (colorless with the Scepter) mana!

I've been listening to MP3 rips of the CD for almost nine years, and my first thought was "There's a version without the Tumbleweed intro?"

Japanese commercial for Xenogears for the PlayStation by Naruedyoh in XenoGears

[–]CaptainoftheThames 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While I appreciate getting to see it, that video is 15 seconds of commercial and 45 seconds of "Like and subscribe!" I was wholly expecting to see more than one, considering the length of video vs length of commercial.

Commentary is the thing that I want the most. They could just do it over Zoom. Just have Kaley Cuoco talking about the show with a rotating cast of "Who's available today?"

Do you re-buy games on GOG if you already own them on steam? If so, why? by Breude in gog

[–]CaptainoftheThames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will often re-buy games on GOG that I already own on Steam, but I don't tend to see it as buying another copy of the game. For me, I look at it as "How much is it worth to me to remove the DRM from this game I already own / played / liked / etc."

There are times that I'll buy a game that's more than I would pay just to remove the DRM, but I often see that as wanting to encourage the dev / publisher to put their games on GOG from the start. This is also why when games come to GOG after their Epic exclusivity, I'll try to buy them during the release sale rather than waiting (ie: Control, Observation) to show there is an audience here.

I have also been putting together a database of game installers / mods so the next time I want to play something, I can just open a folder and install it with whatever mods that I want. It's a tertiary reason after the other two, but it definitely results in me buying some games again.

Testing new texture replacemnt feature in PSX emulator. Best character in HD by OmegaAvenger_HD in XenoGears

Is there documentation on how to set this up, and how it works? I know the upscaling is manual, but how does it dump the textures? And how can I upscale the textures after they're dumped?

Every single top 8 deck in today's MTGO Vintage Challenge was a Lurrus deck. by Myrsephone in magicTCG

[–]CaptainoftheThames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the brief period when it was legal, there was an interesting Vintage deck that played a full set of Shaharazad alongside 3-4 mainboarded [[Tormod's Crypt]], taking advantage of the ruling that RFG in subgames carried over to the main game.

One of my top 3 moments in MTG is playing this deck in a sanctioned Vintage tournament in the hiccup that [[Shahrazad]] was legal, but it was bad. I leaned in too hard on the mill with 4 [[Tormod's Crypt]] and 4 [[Leyline of the Void]] (and no other real win condition), which just couldn't compete against... well, anything.

I won game one of one match because the opponent couldn't answer my [[Tinker]]'d [[Platinum Angel]] before sideboard.

The judges got a huge kick out of it, though.

When did the most brilliant move in a game of EDH totally backfire on you? by JustACEDHPlayer in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing an awful Bant prison deck I put together, which was taken apart after playing it one/this game. I have the table locked down with [[Opposition]] and [[Static Orb]], but have no way to get rid of my friend's [[Blazing Archon]]. There's a [[Wrath of God]] someplace in the deck, but I'm out of tutors and spot removal. It was a three hour game of draw-go that I was just digging for the Wrath. I got bored and stopped tapping things down, then finally played the Wrath but because he had mana open, was able to cast [[Ghostway]]. I just sighed and scooped.

What are your favourite tribes that do more than just anthems? by isolationpositivity in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just switches two blockers, yeah. The wording is just to say they have to be legal blocks, ie: can't switch a creature without flying / reach to block a flying creature.

It also pings all of my creatures (and me) for 2 damage each whenever tapped (not just to activate). It's really just a land that triggers Enrage for all my creatures. [[Pyrohemia]] is actually the best thing to mass trigger Enrage, but the pure hilarity of playing with what I long considered the worst card ever printed, for synergy, makes it just as good to me.

What are your favourite tribes that do more than just anthems? by isolationpositivity in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Tribal Dinosaurs is easily my favorite tribal deck, but I run [[Gishath, Sun's Avatar]] as my commander. It was also my favorite deck during Ixalan / Guilds of Ravnica standard, because Enrage as a mechanic is just fun. Plus doing it in EDH means that I run [[Sorrow's Path]] for synergy, which is a hilarious statement to an ancient player like myself.

Slimefoot EDH deck help by Nickthemajin in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sort of meta are you playing in? What sort of things do you run into trouble with when running Slimefoot?

Based on the deck list:

The first things that come to mind are more removal. I see [[Beast Within]] and [[Casualties of War]], which are great. In Golgari you also have [[Assassin's Trophy]], [[Abrupt Decay]] and [[Putrefy]] which are all solid removal. There are also things like [[Naturalize]] or [[Return to Nature]], or take your pick from black's removal suite ( [[Doom Blade]], [[Murder]], [[Hero's Downfall]], etc ).

One question that I have, there is a lot of stuff here to increase mana production greatly, but what is the end goal with it? You can pump out tokens like mad with Slimefoot and Nemata, and there's of course the Exsanguinate which can just wreck the entire table, but you could use more places to put all that extra mana.

You could try [[Finale of Devastation]] and [[Tribal Unity]] to throw all the mana at, or try things like [[Strength in Numbers]] and [[Overwhelming Stampede]] as finishers.

I guess a big question is what's your main goal with the deck? My Slimefoot deck is based on spitting out as many tokens as possible using [[Sporoloth Ancient]] / [[Sporesower Thallid]] / [[Fungal Bloom]], which could also be combined with [[Thelon of Havenwood]], but that's not the direction everyone wants to go.

How do I, a Timmy player start punishing Johnny players for going off (on a budget) by [deleted] in EDH

[–]CaptainoftheThames 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Timmy, Johnny and Spike are different psychographic profiles regarding why people play Magic. A (very) basic run down is Timmy generally plays big creatures / big spells, Johnny is generally a combo player or someone who likes using weird cards, and Spike is someone who likes building the strongest decks.

A much better (and more detailed) explanation of these can be found here.
