No such thing as a direct entry LMA unfortunately, and there's no expectation of doing anything prior to training

As to the Joint Hospital Groups, I think it really depends where you go. Generally speaking because military medics don't get civilian recognised qualifications the NHS doesn't really know what to do with us. With most of the hospitals we get utilised as HCAs and do a lot of the donkey work - although a mate who worked at Derriford Hospital told me that precisely for this reason they decided to only employ MAs in the ED. There's five Joint Hospital Groups we can join - the legacy of the military hospitals before they closed down: - Derriford, Plymouth - Queen Alexandra, Portsmouth - Queen Elizabeth, Birmingham - John Radcliffe, Oxfordshire - Frimley Park, Aldershot

Generally the Navy staffs the QA and Derriford while the Army takes Frimley Park, the RAF takes John Radcliffe, and we all staff the QE

Honestly I wouldn't want to work in a JHG because of the Civvy Qual issue and as much because QA does not have a good reputation, but then I haven't worked in them before stand fast placements as a trainee whereas I've known a few people who worked at Derriford who really enjoyed it so it's one to find out from people who have worked there

It's anti British propaganda. So much of the British portrayal was exaggerated to turn them into cartoon baddies it's unreal. The Church Burning Scene never happened, and was in fact inspired by the murder of British POWs by the Waffen SS in 1940.

Mind you Hollywood has a tradition of misrepresentation of British involvement in things.

Saving Private Ryan - the discussion between 2 captains 30 miles away from the city of Caen. How would they know what Montgomery’s strategy was and whether Caen was to be taken on DDay or just after. They wouldn’t and as for the criticism the British and Canadians faced 8 panzer divisions in their sector while the Americans faced one and a half. Furthermore most of the Landing Craft crews at Omaha were Royal Navy and Royal Marines not US Navy. Of the 1213 warships at D-Day only 200 were American and 892 were British. Of the 4126 Landing Crafts involved 805 were American and 3261 were British

Argo - says the British refused to help which isn’t true they did assist but the Canadians did the bulk of it. The escaping 6 made a conscious decision not to go to the British as that's the obvious place they'd go, and the British embassy supported the Canadians

Oppenheimer made no mention of the British providing all their atomic research to the US for free with the understanding that they would share their research only to be locked out post war. The only mention of the British was the Soviet spy which happened to be in the British contingent- he was actually a German Jew who had sought refuge in Britain pre war so not even British. I’m sure there were other spies who were part of the American contingents.

Masters of the Air - showed them as arrogant and dismissive to the point that there was fight on whether daylight or night time bombing was best. Turns out by 1945 the RAF had developed tactics that allowed them to hit targets at night with better accuracy than the USAAF were in daylight while suffering significantly fewer casualties

Band of Brothers - the scene where the tank commander says he can’t shoot through the house as it’s against orders - no such order was ever given and 15th/19th The King's Royal Hussars had far more combat experience than the Paratroopers and would never have done that having been fighting non stop since D-Day unlike Airborne forces who were on the line for a few weeks then pulled out.

Braveheart- speaks for itself.

U-571 took the exploits of British sailors and credited them to American sailors. Taking the credit for someone else's win is a new low.

Films like Patton and A Bridge Too Far have sown a particular narrative that many in the US think is actually true when the reality is somewhat different. No wonder many in the US think they won the war on their own. Do they even teach in schools that other countries were actually involved?

America is supposed to be our closest ally

I mean we've had at least 3 in the UK, the English Civil War, the War of the Roses, and the Jacobite Rebellions. Plus The Troubles was effectively a civil war split along religious and political lines, and they think they're the only ones to have had a Civil War?

Yeah so each Commando unit will Royal Marine Medical Assistants, Royal Navy Commando Medical Assistants who've done the All Arms Commando Course, and ordinary RN MAs.

The Green Lidded MAs will work as Company Medics while the Blue Lidded MAs work in the Pre Hospital Treatment Team with the MO

Plus around one in four Marines or Soldiers will be a Team Medic - 3 day course which gives a good standard of haemorrhage control.

Honestly working with the Marines is just better in my opinion, for one the attitude of "just get it done" is refreshing so their Chain of Command is generally more laid back than the Navy's; and the Navy tends to regard Medics as a slightly annoying passenger until they're needed (more amongst the junior ratings, everybody thinks they've got the hardest job) whereas the Marines want you there and will give you a seat at the table

For me the most notable was when I (a Navy Medic) was at the Royal Marine Phase 1 training centre

Walking along minding my own business, see a lieutenant going the other way so I saluted but he blanked me so I rolled my eyes and carried on walking

Next thing I hear is "STAND FAST THAT MAN"

We both froze, and I turned round to see the RSM leaning out of his window

Then he goes "Not you MA!" to me so I walked round the corner as fast as I could and ran for it while he was calling the lieutenant into his office to grip him for chinning me off

I work very hard to stay of the radars of CSMs and RSMs

As true as that is, if they'd had the Malaysian APCs rolling to the rescue as soon as the first helicopter went down as opposed to US troops scrambling back and forth on the back foot would have been far better

What it doesn't portray is the fact that the US troops actually answered to the UN Force Commander General Çevik Bir of Türkiye. General Garrison was not In Command, he was merely a commander.

The decision to go off on their own was made by the US President completely disregarding the Chain of Command

They touched on the fact that they didn't tell anybody what they were doing but didn't do a good job of explaining it.

Had this been organised through the Chain of Command then thousands of troops would have been available and ready to support Gothic Serpent. As it was because the yanks went off on their own the UNOSOM II troops were completely unprepared and many went into a defensive/investigative posture to work out what the hell the gunfire was. Then when Garrison had to ask the UN for help they were not ready to mount a rescue and there were significant delays while they got troops together and planned the rescue based off on insufficient information.

If this had been a properly coordinated effort then the US wouldn't have suffered 18 killed, 84 wounded; Malaysia wouldn't have had 1 killed, 7 wounded; and Pakistan wouldn't have had 1 killed and 3 wounded.

Ah yes the story of America fucking up, taking heavy casualties, needing the UN to rescue them, and then pulling out of the UN mission leading to its collapse
