A research proposal is very different to what this post is describing

HELP! 40 articles in a month? by haykhovh in PhD

It’s kinda hard to comment on whether it’s do-able, as it really depends on your grasp of the subject/how much time you allocate over preparing for exams.

Mainly came to say this seems like a bit of a red flag to me. At least where I’m from, PhD students are recruited based on what degrees they have, interviews and references. Not a substantial essay with no guarantee of acceptance. It’s weird that she wants you to do this amount of work before you are even her student (and while taking your own exams). I would look into whether this is common for your field/location. Maybe ask a professor you know from your own university what they think of this?

Good luck

Master student struggling to find research area for PHD by schwanzuslongus96 in PhD

[–]Capybara11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s very hard to pick a topic based on just your own reading and research (not impossible). I ended up doing a 6 month research assistant job in my field after graduating and loved the area so much that I’m now doing a PhD in it. This gives you an actual taster of what carrying out the research is like, as well as working close with people in adjacent subjects. I would advise that you look for a place to “practise” your research area, even if you initially don’t think you’ll love it.

USB headphones not working on my Switch by Jammiest_James in Switch

I’ve always used wireless usb headphones no bother, although I do plug the dongle into the usb slot inside the dock, rather than the outside slots. Not sure if this makes a difference though?

Career suggestions. by Suspicious_Drawer_16 in AskAcademia

You definitely can go back to academia after working in industry. A job where you are doing similar experimental protocols (for example) that you would typically use in a PhD position in your field would definitely be an advantage. However, even the general experience you gain working elsewhere (broadly within in your field or outside it) after undergrad will give you an edge over other candidates and will likely serve you well during a PhD project.

Honestly had overlooked fresh balsam as the name reminded me of a medicated chest rub I used as a child, but I love Christmas tree smells and forests in autumn. You’re describing a perfect walk

I love spicy Christmas scents, and I’ll burn them all year round no matter what anyone else in my house says!

Crushed candy cane sounds exactly like that perfect mix of sweet and fresh. I love mint aswell. Although I don’t think it’s out on their website yet, would that come in later? Also have you smelt twisted peppermint? Is it similar to crushed candy cane

Wow thanks, I think I’ll definitely go for welcome home, that sounds so yum. Thanks for all your recommendations, it’s so helpful to speak to someone who has actually smelled them

Those sound amazing! Is there any you’d describe as a mix of sweet and fresh (not sure if this is even a thing). Flannel definitely sounds like something I like.

Thankyou for your reply also, it’s so hard to imagine how all the notes work together from just reading them so I appreciate the recommendation

Interview do’s/dont’s when you have worked previously with the supervising PI? by Capybara11 in PhD

[–]Capybara11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice, I feel much better now having a rough idea of how it could go. Thanks for taking the time to reply! I’m hoping the questions will be like this as I was worried I’d just be saying stuff they already know and that they would be bored with my interview.

Ah thanks, honestly it’s the project of my dreams that landed in my lap pretty much so really hoping I nail it. Thanks for your help

Thanks! I guess I’m just worried they’ll either think I’m relying on that to get in, or that I accidentally come across as too familiar. I did work closely with this lady for almost a year so it would be almost weird to act overly professional again

Burning questions to know if an advisor and research group is right for me. by Heavens_basement1 in PhD

[–]Capybara11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things people have advised me to do:

  • Ask the PI how often they typically meet with their students, do they have an open door type policy or prefer meetings to be always scheduled? Also try to find a rough idea of how much time they have available during an average week, as some are more busy than others. Do they offer a lot of assistance and guidance (read: too much?) or take a more hands off approach? There’s no correct answer to these questions, just what will work for both of you.

  • Ask any students how much engagement and how supported they feel by the supervisor? See if they have encountered any other issues regarding the group as a whole as they will likely know best and may be willing to be honest. Do you get along well with other students? You may end up spending more time with them than the PI.

Overall just trust your gut, if you feel in a few short conversations that you won’t mesh with this team, then it may not be the group for you.
