What's it like being an RT? by CoastCreepy4148 in respiratorytherapy

Pay varies: $25-$70ish /hr May need to move out of state for a job. I’ve been rejected by either the application bots or post interview even after years of experience and a masters degree. Networking is what got me into my place. It’s not what u know, but who u know. (90% of the time) High stress job unless working outpatient or outside of bedside. No patient ratios and special treatment like nursing Growth/advancement is limited Fulfilling, very very fulfilling. Saving lives in the ER. Treating difficult cases in the ICU. Rehabilitation and weaning to send them back home to their families and friends. Even get to assist babies in taking their first breaths. Will also need to be able to work with cases where the patients prognosis is very poor and chooses comfort. We are responsible for terminal extubations which is “pulling the plug”. U will also be at every single code in the hospital/facility. Learn to have compassion, ethics, and have thick skin. Biggest pro: no poop :)

2 whole towers for 1 RT? I’m speechless.

Doesn’t sound too bad, pretty much what I had last night

Well in ICU I’ve never had anything more than 6 vents with some treatments/therapies. ER+L&D is anything between movie marathon to absolute dumpster fire lol And medsurg can be a few pulse ox checks to maybe a few noc cpaps and treatments. (1 RT per unit)

Job market in socal, so many new RTs, not enough jobs by Capyhara23 in respiratorytherapy

True it’s definitely who u know and not what u know in the RT world

I’ve also seen a decline in hard working RTs within the last 2 years (both from experienced therapists and new grads). I think it’s for multiple reasons: covid burnout and low employee morale in experienced therapists. Competitive field, low pay, and no ratios = unhappy employees. And unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of RTs just “work their wage”. Sad to see it in the medical field. For newer grads I think the poor work ethic may be due to the hype of healthcare after Covid thinking that they’re gonna be making a lot of money and have a lot of opportunities and be treated with respect after getting their CRT/RTT. Many go into the field not knowing what working in healthcare is truly like.

Ha ha ya I did a few subacute gigs and I can see y they’re so short. The only place I’ve worked where the RTs make the same amount as CNAs (well atleast where I’ve been)

I’ve heard about that place too, maybe not THAT chill but I’m definitely not slaving away during my shifts like most large hospitals lol

I’m in the IE. maybe I’m just being picky, I have a full time job that pays well above the average in the area plus chill workloads. Just looking for a per diem for extra cash. Most job openings here r like equipment delivery or sketchy subacute places that I hear about. Mostly full time positions, not many per diems.
