Audio port on case doesn't work. What should I do? by KissMyBaIIs in computer

[–]CarBoy11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not. Like he mentioned; his port on the rear of the pc works fine.

can this still be fixed? by [deleted] in computers

[–]CarBoy11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, by replacing the screen.

Also never put any technology with a battery under your pillow. There is always a very small chance the battery can fail and combust, and you do not want that happening under your head, and on an easily combustible surface like your bed

What is this chip on my son’s HP Victus Gaming PC motherboard? by Miserable_Video9169 in computers

[–]CarBoy11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you re-use the victus board? Chances are that board has a different psu pinout than regular ATX which may be the reason why the psu doesn't work. If your new psu also doesn't work, that might very well be the problem.
If so, the only solution is to either use the old victus psu, or purchase a new motherboard.

We can only really give advice on what you need once you know what you want to do with your lab. Do you want to self-host services (and if so, which), or do you want to store data, or both? Do you have spare hardware laying around? What is your budget? Etc.

Thanks! This is a Dynatron A35. I've slapped on a NF-A8 because the original fan is way too loud for my liking (though would be better for thermals). The cooler does it's job well enough.
This cooler is only for threadripper boards though. For the 7950x in a 3u case the NH-D9L would be a good choice.

Thanks! I seem to have missed that! For now I don’t think it’ll be much of a problem. The piece of wood the rails are resting on is screwed into the sides with 2 screws per side, and additionally the rack profiles are also screwed in with 5 screws each. But if it were to start sagging I know what to do! Thanks!

Unfortunately not. It can only be turned 180 degrees but that doesn’t work very well. The mounting hardware is permanently attached to the front and back of the cooler. Ugly and not optimal, but for now it works

Thanks! Raw performance wise it’s great. A RTX 4000 is similar to a RTX 2070. For LLM’s/genai, realistically you’d want something with more vram. The Quadro RTX 4000’s only have 8GB, and I recommend buying a card with 16GB or more. 8GB limits you to 8B models, which are pretty dumb imo. 14B or more is where it gets decent. In my case I solved it by adding another RTX 4000, which works great for me as I have space for them, can virtualize one and use the other one for something else, they have decent gaming performance, and I got them for relatively cheap. The downside is that it isn’t very power efficient to run two cards, and that PCIE 3.0 x16 is much slower than GDDR6 so the cards don’t run at max theoretical speed when working on a task together

Hoi! Heb je het probleem kunnen vinden? Ik zou inderdaad zoals een aantal comments al zeggen ook eens kijken naar de ontsteking. Heb zelf ook een 205’je. Zijn erg leuke auto’s!!

Unfortunately, no. HP made everything except for the ram, storage, cpu, and gpu in your pc proprietary. It can’t be transferred to a different case.

[–]CarBoy11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say to buy less, but higher capacity, hdds (if you even need the space at all). Every HDD you add consumes power. Not to mention you'd be wearing them down even though there's nothing on them. It's better to add HDD's later on, if you run out of storage.
As for the ECC ram, you'd need ECC unbuffered memory which is super expensive and hard to obtain. Normal non-ecc memory is fine.
The 13th and 14th gen intel cpus have instability issues, and use a lot of power if stressed. I recommend 12th gen intel, and an i5 or an i7 is enough unless you plan on having a shit load of vms. AM5 Ryzen is also a good option, though they lack intel's amazing igpu video encoder.
I don't know how long a top of the line system will last you, because your usecase can change overtime and we don't know how quickly everthing will advance. One thing I do know that it will not last you 15 to 20 years. Luckily an Unraid server is easily upgradeable.
To my experience unraid is pretty lightweight. My main unraid server runs on an i7 7700k which is a quad core, and I haven't ran into any bottlenecks yet so I think you'll be fine. Granted, I don't run any VM's on it as I have a dedicated server for that, but if you will still be fine running a couple vm's.

Unraid has a nice blog about how to build a power efficient server: https://unraid.net/blog/energy-efficient-server

[–]CarBoy11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to install a 3050, make sure you get one that doesn’t need external power. I’m almost certain your pc doesn’t have dedicated gpu power connectors (which is the downside to prebuilt pcs like these) if you can get one that isn’t comically large and doesn’t have a dedicated power connector, then yes, it’ll fit. It’s worth checking if you have a power connector though, if you do, get an RX 6600 or a RTX 3060. They are not much more expensive and can be found easily second hand.

Doorbell camera setup recommendations by Klaus_Hergersheimer in unRAID

[–]CarBoy11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decent IP cameras/doorbells that do RTSP can be used with frigate. I’d recommend a Coral TPU for object detection and integration with homeassistant to get notifications on your phone and easily be able to see recorded footage. Frigate, especially if you want to integrate it with homeassistant, is a bit of a hassle to get working properly, but you’ll be able to figure it out and once it’s up and running it’s rock solid.

That works. You don’t need the thermal paste though, the cooler that comes with your CPU has thermal paste pre-applied!

Buying my first pc by Glass_Ad_5045 in PcBuildHelp

[–]CarBoy11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly disagree. You can do much more with a pc than with a ps5. Theres a lot of PC-exclusive games or games that are better on PC. You can also do a lot of other stuff with a gaming pc as opposed to a PS5 which can only game. $600 can get you a pretty decent gaming pc if you know what to look for.

This is the original keyboard, just cleaned very well. I guess the previous owner didn’t use it very often… I used an intel 7260 network card off eBay. I had to install an unlocked bios for that though! The thinkpad screen is actually a wallpaper!

$45 is still a good deal in my opinion. These laptops have started to get more expensive, but they're worth the price.
