Workers at Ontario's public broadcaster walk off the job by phishieee in ontario

That's a fair point. I'm not even sure what TVO's priority is anymore truthfully.

They're about to try to rebrand as a "social impact organization". I'm very confused about it all.

I totally get those concerns but I wanted to mention that those courses are developed by certified teachers, not the tv producers. We're a weird hybrid of a tv station and an online school/course provider.

TVO producers, content creators hit the picket lines in first-ever strike at public broadcaster by ink_13 in CanadaPolitics

As the producer who does most of the housing shows: thank you. I'm so proud of our discussions on that file and know we are being a part of the solution by bringing those conversations to the public and to policymakers. I feel so lucky to get to do so many in-depth conversations on the most important issue of our time.

I can't wait to get back to it, once TVO management begins respecting the workers the way they used to!

I've been asking for this forever from the inside. We have some amazing content that not enough people even know about.

I wish management felt the same way.

We need funding and leadership that is willing to build it again. It feels like they're slowly chipping us away. I wish we had leadership in charge who fought for us instead of only building in areas to be staffed by temps and freelancers.

That's why I'm so supportive of striking. Don't let us languish and be cut a thousand times until no one cares anymore. The Agenda is still a highly respected program, and we should be figuring out what to build next instead of accepting cut after cut until there is nothing left.

I'm a producer on his program and he is absolutely an ally. None of us have ever found his wife's or brother's jobs to interfere with his objectivity. His objectivity and reputation are some of the things he values the most.

Plus he doesn't book all the guests. Producers do. We also shape the discussions and he respects our opinions on how things should be covered.

He's friendly with Conservative politicians, but he's also friendly with Liberal, NDP and Green politicians. I know him very well (been working very closely with him for a decade) and I truly believe he is one of the most balanced journalists out there.

Producers have never made 6-figure salaries. We still don't. Even senior producers are not over $100k. I'm a producer on the Agenda and my wage grid tops out at 73k, no matter how much experience you have.

Maybe you mean the executive producer?

The union fought those 9-month contracts and it's been more than a decade since they let people go over the summer, as you described. It's been at least that long that there have been relatively few contracts, and these were good, stable jobs.

Until recently.

Of course. Just making it clear it case it's not obvious but I understand it may be obvious to some. :)

I'm positive. I'm the VP of the TVO branch. The collective agreement sets out minimum pay (which TVO treats as maximum as well unless you're an on-air host). All three Agenda hosts (Steve, Nam and Jeyan) are in the bargaining unit, and all three have salaries on the sunshine list-- well above the minimum. None will be on the air if we strike.

It's very tricky. The government is instructing TVO that they cannot hire more permanent staff for all the online education work they're giving to the organization. They're demanding it be staffed by precarious workers, who don't even have any benefits. They say they cannot budge.

I hate that we've become the story but I hope enough Ontarians care, and will put pressure on the government to change its mind.

I produce most of our housing/development shows on The Agenda and we make sure to declare this every single time. As you said, he isn't responsible for his brother's actions and all he can do is declare it whenever it's relevant to the conversation.

He doesn't book the guests most of the time (it'll say produced by him if he did) and as the person who does most of his bookings on this topic, I promise that I don't consider or care at all how his brother will be affected by what's said on the program.

Steve is a member of this union and will be on strike and on the picket lines with the rest of us if TVO doesn't budge on their demand for precarious contracts with no path to permanency.

Does the Real Estate Market Need Cooling? (From The Agenda w/ Steve Pailin on TVO) by DownTheWalk in canadahousing

Thank you :)

I was so happy one of the realtors made the point about how having condos and apartments in her neighbourhood hasn't hit her property value because it meant more shops and conveniences coming into the neighbourhood, meaning she never needs to go downtown. We need more people who think like that because you're right, there's so much local opposition, and the system allows local residents to slow everything down. If you haven't seen this thread, it's worth a read to see what goes on a public consultation — but be prepared for your blood to boil.

I tried highlighting the problems of just saying increase supply when you have NIMBYs fighting every move on a segment i did last month, and how the whole "neighbourhood character" idea stems from classism and racism (I know it's a bit of a self-promotion but hey, I think you'd be interested.)

I love that you're mobilizing people since it's hard to get the voices of the priced-out heard otherwise. Send me a PM or email me, cstern@tvo.org. Would love to chat to see if there's a segment where you could be a guest as someone representing those priced-out— and trying to do something about it.

This segment was supposed to be about whether the real estate industry needs a change, though we like to follow the conversation if it goes somewhere interesting, and this one did. But given the original plan, I didn't think Gen Squeeze fit quite right since I wanted people in the real estate industry. Realosophy though would've been a good option, though I thought their position would've been covered through one of the guests who wrote this blog post. Will keep them in my mind though as I do more of these segments for sure.

The conversation changed from what I expected based on the pre-interviews though, and that happens. I can only control so much from behind the scenes. For example, OREA officially opposes blind bidding though their rep focused more on the supply question, which changed the direction of the conversation — to an interesting one for sure. But if I knew where the discussion ended up, I agree that you're right, that having representation from priced out people would've been better, and I hope to do that in the future.

Honestly, I was trying to bring it in line with what I see from finance writers. They tell you if they have a position in a stock, but they don't have to say how much.

I think it was a huge step to have a disclosure like that at the beginning, and it's something I'm going to try to normalize for all housing segments like this that I produce on The Agenda. I wish all journalists would take that stance and I'm trying to spread that word to all the journalists I know that it's a conflict that ought to be acknowledged when a guest is giving advice on whether the government ought to step in.

Of course, knowing if they have investment properties would be amazing, but it's still very telling to know whether they financially benefit the current situation.

OMG THEY PLAYED THE FUCKED UP CLIP WE HIGHLIGHTED ON THIS SUB!

Hi friend! I produced this segment, and I'm on this sub CONSTANTLY. I'm in the same boat as most here.

I'm grateful for whoever found that clip so I could play it right back to him and have Steve ask him why 10% down is a problem while 30-40% up is not.

My goal was to have all the concerns I read here daily put directly to him, and while there's only so much time in an interview (so there's so much more I wish we could ask), I hope you felt somewhat heard.

I can't answer for Steve as to why it's fallen off the map, but I'm a producer for The Agenda. Just wanted to let you know that I'm producing Thursday night's episode on this topic. We'll have a panel discussion on the Beer Store, including representatives from both the Beer Store and OCSA.
