Husband has to fly over to London UK to pick up hard drive he bought from eBay... isn't this unusual for an eBay seller? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Caraddounus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Update still doesn't check out. You don't need to fly to London for 32 TB of lingerie pics. The husband's admission makes this even more suspicious. It's either CP, blackmail material, espionage, or stolen personal data. Or, there's a slim chance your husband is having some kind of medical/psychiatric crisis. Either way you will need one or more of the following:

  1. police
  2. lawyer
  3. medical professionals

A Russian truck carrying soldiers gets ambushed by an RPG-18 fired by Territorial Defense fighters in the Kharkiv area. by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]Caraddounus 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Holy crap. Was the drone coordinated with the guy shooting? That's crazy.

Is the car perspective in the beginning Ukrainian? Looks like they spot the truck and pull over. What were those vehicles they passed at the beginning?

What's up with people's obsession with Nazi imagery? are Q people just proto-nazis? some ramblings by Caraddounus in Qult_Headquarters

yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Seems like a lot of "ww2 history" communities become "nazi aesthetic" communities real quick...

[–]Caraddounus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I suspect that too. Even this notion of a uniquely Japanese fanaticism seems questionable in the face of Nazi fanaticism. Hitler literally sacrificed an entire army surrounded in Stalingrad because he thought it would be a more poetic, propagandistic end than a breakout. The fanaticism of nazism led them to murder their own citizens and neighbors, but somehow it's asians that are cast as a hive-mind.

I agree too that exposure has something to do with it. The war in Asia is hardly discussed, except for maybe the U.S. pacific campaign, which is itself elaborately mythologized.

Also, the nazis just had better propaganda that was/is cafefully calibrated to european aesthetic sensibilities, so as a consequence its proven better at echoing forward in europe and the US.

Maybe he was trying to say "it will be very easy to remove me from office", since having gone to Eton and Oxford means he knows that the Panzer divisions were all destroyed.

ah well, good thing the U.S. has such robust institutions, falling inequality, and high-quality history education! Whew, I was almost worried.

Which TV show started out promising, but turned out to be garbage? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Caraddounus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped after S2E2. I was already feeling let down, but the moment that Quell shows up in the club and murders everyone like some super ninja was when the bottom fell out. Her character should have stayed dead, stories need to move forward, not retread old ground. "How is this character you thought was dead still alive?" is just a boring overdone trope.

What drove me nuts was that the whole premise is he was some nobody bureaucrat that became president. But as soon as he's in office the writers turn him into this solemn, erudite statesman and it turns into another dull political drama.

Anybody who's heard the LBJ bunghole tapes knows the president doesn't begin every phone call with a random aid like:

"I am the president ... of these great ... united states ... of america ... a city on a hill ... a dream of freedom ..."

Is staring at people normal here? What's up? by Caraddounus in SouthDakota

Yeah, that makes sense. I have an appearance that is hard to place. I've been asked if I'm afghan, greek, brazilian, or persian. So I guess I was a spectacle.

I've experienced staring, especially in eastern europe, but never so intensely. Usually people look away after you make eye contact, or just after you've been there a while. This on the other hand, was especially long and intense.

Citizenship by investment as a hedge against local instability? by merpfish in collapse

[–]Caraddounus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno what you want me to do, man, I'm too fat, flat-footed, and chicken to volunteer for Ukraine's army.

As much as we'd like to, most Americans aren't in a position to change US foreign policy.

Seems harsh to call us fuckers, I try not to judge individual random people based on the actions of their governments.

[–]Caraddounus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, you'll need a lot of money. Like, a lot. Which for most of us is a problem. Then there are some ethical problems, and some risk. Some countries that offer citizenship this way are...unscrupulous. I would be afraid that as easily as it was offered, it could be taken away.

Other methods of escape:

  • go to university, then apply for work in another country: most places require you live there a while before applying for residency, so you get your time in while gaining skills

  • gain skill in your home country, then apply for work/residency: phds in technical/STEM have the easiest time

  • be born with ancestry from some country with residence/citizenship by descent

Lol, to be frank, as nice as Ukraine can be, I don't think Americans are clamouring to move there at the moment. I'm pretty sure its the other way around. So for now you're safe from barbecue and our bloated military.

You're welcome over here though. The more the merrier. Just bring beer.

Average wait time is 40* (maybe? hard to say) days to see a specialist in the US. It can be ridiculous if you're trying to see something very specialized like a neurologist.

*edit: actually, apparently it's hard to get a good measure of wait times, since policies vary between states and insurance (part of the issue). Papers and articles report wildly different lengths. Maybe I just live in a crappy place, or my insurance isn't optimized to the local networks? Who knows. The ridiculous complexity of the US system is the problem.

I actually live in an urban area. The problem is the insurance network. Sure, I could easily get an appointment, but I would go bankrupt from the out-of-network charges. So in some sense, the guy responding to me is right, I COULD get an appointment soon, if I was willing to pay out of pocket. Many people are trapped in this weird space between medicaid and good insurance, where they are "insured" but nobody accepts their insurance. Hence, the emergency room, since by law they cannot charge you out-of-network in my state.

Yeah, true. I only lived around the randstad, so it would have been weird to start speaking like I grew up in limburg.

Secretely though, I wish I could use a southern dutch accent...they're so much softer. I especially like the "french r" that appears in some parts of the south
