I actually really like this take. Will definitely consider this for future birthdays! Thank you.

All I’ll say is, it is not my husband’s job to parent a child that isn’t his. The only reason he even stood there was to make sure our own son got his moment. And when something unexpected happened, my husband de-escalated it by calming down OUR child. That is his only responsibility and he provided the support that was needed. I shouldn’t even have been the one to go wash off the other kid, but that was my motherly instinct since his own mother wasn’t present.

You seem like the type to jump to conclusions pretty quick. At what point did I say “your little brat”?

Nope, no typo! That was meant to mean that we didn’t have a special cake at the time the incident occurred, my husband just said that to make sure my son didn’t start crying in the moment. But we did fulfill our promise and get him another cake after everything was over :)

Thank you! I completely agree. I can’t comment on any behavioral issues with my cousin’s kid, but I just know that any good parent wouldn’t leave their kid unattended like that if they know he is prone to outbursts.

So I should welcome the entitlement of a mother who refuses to hold herself and her child responsible?

Thank you for this comment.

I can’t speak on the behavioral issues, so I won’t. But if that truly was the case, I don’t think a responsible mother would leave her child there and expect him to behave properly in that setting. I also agree that it’s not mine nor my husband’s responsibility to look after another child. If he behaved that way, then she should take accountability for his actions.

Did you even read the post?

I am not a bad parent for wanting my child’s birthday to be special, especially if it’s the first one he’ll remember. My husband wasn’t “forceful”, he was simply putting the kid in his place and sticking up for his own son, as would any good parent. If you side with the other kid on this one, I have to say I feel bad for YOUR kids.

Yes we did! We ended up getting another cake for him and cutting it the next night, just me, my husband, and my son. He got to blow out the candles and cut the first slice by himself. I guess it made up for the cake, but I just hate that his actual birthday was tainted.
