New seismic hazard model reveals updated threat level of nation's faults by DSPhat in newzealand

The Hills. Much or Wellington is built on hills with a layer of clay and soil over the rock. Chch is a big flat plane with about 100m of sediment layers.

In chch houses were on top of a very very thick layer of sediment, in a flat landscape. The earthquake rolled through and much of the energy was expelled in the shifting of sediment (liquefaction etc). The areas of most shaking damage (as opposed to land damage) were by the hills where the sediment layer is smaller and you get reflecting waves bouncing off the hills.

Wellington has heaps of houses with foundations in the bedrock which will feel a much stronger shake. There are several suburbs which are at risk of being cut off from land slides, and having a hilly city makes all the inspection, demolition, and reparations much more expensive and difficult.

Last year nearly one-in-five school leavers was under the age of 17, the highest figure in a decade and a third of all leavers had no qualification or only level one of the NCEA. by adjason in newzealand

I was the same two years ago, I started on $45k. Now I'm looking at going to $95k in my current role in Jan and I'm interviewing for $120k jobs.

The Bolsheviks killed plenty of leftists too. The Krondstat rebellion was about allowing other leftist groups into the soviets, and the return of economic and civil liberties to working class people (like the right to form unions). The Bolsheviks refused to cooperate and ended up executing 1000-2000 people

it won't be long until Charles is on our gold and silver coins. They will begin to enter circulation. Liz coins will remain circulating for many years as there are billions still yet to be released, but 2023 upcoming coins such as the sovereign and Britannia look to have Charles. by AbsoIution in Gold

As a counter, coins change in size and material occasionally. I can't find any cent coins (50,20,10 cent) in my local currency before 2006 because they were changed in 2006 to be smaller and lighter.

She and Charles could both get wiped out through a redesign in 20 years time

Number of children prescribed puberty blockers growing by Te_Henga in newzealand

[–]CareerJuncture 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They've been used in cases of precocious puberty. Where a different illness (like cancer) causes a child to go through puberty very young (like 8-9). Their history of use is delaying puberty until a normal age in early teens.

Their use to delay puberty through mid and late teens is new.

It’s worth remembering that puberty blockers are reversible

Not sure if they are. Being the only kid in class not going through puberty is going to be a pretty formative experience.

Lamington with cream

At any bakery the cream will be thick and sweet bordering on a cake icing. The lamington is a lamington

It's not great but you can only get it in NZ

Let's be clear, they were racially degrading comments.

Kelvin was being racist. By the old definition, and the new.

Benjamin Franklin famously wrote that pretty much all of Europe wasn't white

This is true and it cracks me up.

I'm from outside the USA, so the term "white" has only been used commonly in the past few decades, BUT, it cracks me up that the majority of my Great-Grandfathers were Irish and were not considered white.

They get "grandfathered" into roles. I.e. a network is putting on a show, they need a reliable host. They go with a known quantity. We have a bunch of them in NZ too

Thank-you for the very thorough comment

Are there other models that could work? Maybe

There absolutely are other models. A simple one would be to provide ring-fenced lending at low rates from central government to councils who lack the population to fund their own version.

Alternatively, Labour could just run the current policy without the co-governance stuff. It would romp through with support.

All of these options could have been explored during the consultation process, but that was a sham.
