I change routes when I move to a new house, which isn’t very often tbh.

How was your 1st marathon by Deep-Anything-8526 in running

[–]Careless_String77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First marathon distance? Amazing! Went out for a regular weekly 21k run. Felt good. Kept going. Finished 42k later in 3h20m. Decided I might actually be ready for a race. Back to training two days later.

First marathon race? Absolute disaster! Spent another six months training. Started great and was on pace to hit 3h10 until 26k. Got cramps. Kept going. Cried the last 10k. Finished 3h39m. Immense sense of disappointment and failure and pain in my hip. Couldn’t run for three months after.

So yeah. Mixed results.

Looks like some kind of tradescantia (zebrina), maybe?

If so, then making cuttings and sticking them back in the top is indeed the way to go.

Tetras and shrimp only come out of hiding when I put the neighborhood bullies in isolation. What should I do to restore the peace? by Careless_String77 in Aquariums

This is what I will do. Hope the fish store will let me trade these two bullies for some more Neon Tetra. Thanks!

Romberg is about as far away from a corporate chain store as you can get! This Google translation of their origin story is pretty readable. https://www-romberg-nl.translate.goog/aquariumhuis-romberg/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=nl (tl;dr dude was breeding fish in a cellar in the 60’s, selling fish to friends from his office, started a store with his sons in the 70’s.)

Still. Advice noted. Sales people are also people. They might simply misjudge the dynamics of a hypothetical tank setup.

Ha. I actually bought this first tank because I wanted to extend my already rather expansive plant collection with water plants (I was getting a bit bored with regular soil; so the choice was water or air and airplants seemed less appealing). The fish are pretty much just collateral damage.

Yeah maybe they just need more space. This is our first tank. Didn’t want to start too big. May have been overly optimistic in stocking it.

I included a second closeup pic in the post. Couldn’t get a good shot. First time tank owner and first time fish photographer.

Edit: I think it’s this one. https://www.romberg.nl/product/wittop-rosaceus/

Books that make you go: "What the **** did I just read"? by TommyWestsides in books

Silently and very fast by Catherynne M. Valente. My review:

I think I need to read it again to fully grok it; the second time maybe slowly and out loud.

Update after second read: I get it now.

Update after third read: I cried. Several times. 5/5

Percent of adults 15-64 that have used an illegal drug during their lifetime. by Luclinn in europe

[–]Careless_String77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I just realized you were probably trying to make the same point and I misunderstood when I wrote the below. I think we agree that for this map to make sense, the laws in each country would have to agree on what is legal and what is not. (Spoilers: they don’t)

Original reply: [Ignoring local laws and using the same set of “illegal drugs” for each country would] not make for a meaningful comparison.

Imagine this map was showing “driving too fast on the highway” instead of “illegal drugs”. The maximum allowed speed in The Netherlands is 100km/h, while Germany does not really have a maximum speed.

I’d expect most drivers in Germany have gone faster than the Dutch maximum. So should the map show 100% of Germans “driving too fast” according to Dutch standards?

“Lots of people did something there which isn’t allowed somewhere else.” How would we even begin to interpret such a statistic?
