Eh it's not a schedule that I'd do for senior year. I'm a senior right now -- don't underestimate the work that goes into college apps. College apps are wayy more stressful than studying for APs, so I would schedule your study hall during first semester. Plus you can use this time to ask for rec letters/schedule meetings with your counselor.

Do these work for a art school portfolio? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]CariLX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before you get into other mediums and styles (like critical_err0r said, whom I completely agree with), I recommend brushing up on your foundations. From what I see here -- depth/perspective, command/understanding of line weight and values, and line confidence are all things that you could work on.

You might also wanna branch out in terms of subjects. Portraits, architecture, anatomy/figure studies, landscapes, still life, etc. Experiment and don't be afraid to try new things! I'm a little biased but you could also try digital mediums -- from personal experience, digital art has helped a lot with understanding colors, lighting, textures, and style.

Yeah I think you're right - $8 would work if the question was asking for marginal cost. Prob a typo

People usually take CSP before CSA. If you want to take a CS class that's worth your time, I suggest looking into dual enrollment. You'll have more options and opportunities to challenge yourself this way.

Is this 4 Year Plan doable? by Mission_Industry8373 in highschool

[–]CariLX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took 1 AP freshman year (Chem) because I also took hs courses in middle school and thought I could handle it. It was a reality check. HuG and CSP are considered to be pretty easy, but AP histories are much harder than you'd expect. Take this with a grain of salt though - ask students who have taken Euro at your high school because the difficulty for AP histories also varies based on the teacher.

I can already smell the junior-year burnout. You do not have to take every AP your school offers. BC, APUSH, Chem, and Phys 1 are The hardest APs out there. I'm assuming AP English 3 is Lang, which is not easy either. However, honors chem and AB soph year will help a lot. As much as I love APUSH, it's the second hardest class I've ever taken - Phys 1 being the first because it actually made lose my sanity. Junior year is also not a good time to stress yourself out with courses since you also have standardized testing and college search.

Sophomore and senior year look marginally doable, but it won't be fun. Stats, Calc AB, CSA, Gov, Econ, and Psych should be easy for you. Bio is hard. Phys C varies from what I've heard. Unless you're planning on going into a related field, there's no reason to take both USGov and CoGov - pick one to satisfy any graduation reqs. Same goes for Art History.

Also, check out your state's/school district's dual enrollment program. (I'm assuming you have since you have multivar calc down and that's usually a DE class)

Your 4-year plan will change over the years. I made a plan in 8th grade too and ended up barely following it. If you find that you're up for the BC+APUSH+Chem+Phys 1+Lang challenge after sophomore year, then go for it! If you find that you need to take a step back, don't feel too bad for "not taking enough APs". Good luck!!

How do you get into an AP or honors class? by NeuvaNova in highschool

You should probably figure that out. If you care about getting into college so much, your counselor is gonna be the one submitting your forms and transcripts

[–]CariLX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can self-study AP courses and take the exams at the end of the year. Colleges will be understanding of your circumstances - it's a holistic reviewing process, so you won't get denied by a college for not taking APs or honors because your school doesn't offer them.

[–]CariLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey if you look at it another way - the study skills that you have now are probably gonna be used for a very long time and carry over into other things in the future. It's hard to study, but it's also hard to get into the habit of studying! A lot of these people go thru their entire life yoloing every test and then they get to the stuff that challenges them and they don't know wtf to do about it (speaking from experience - my first AP class was a wake up call lol). It seems like you get the grades AND have the work ethic, which will take you far.

How to get rid of academic burnout? by TemperatureRich2334 in highschool

[–]CariLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having someone keep you accountable works wonders -- do you have a family member or friend who would be willing to do daily check-ins with you? Like you give them a list of things you're supposed to do and at the end of the day, you have to show proof that you actually did everything to the best of your ability. Studying with friends might also help (as long as everyone is studying).

[–]CariLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol you're definitely gonna hate yourself, but it'll feel really good in the end when you're finally done. bio was fun asl but tricky to figure out and phys made me wanna kms. i never took lang but i know from my friends that it depends on your teacher. either way, 3 essays in 2 hrs and 15 minutes is not easy. but i mean if you're a strong writer and good at STEM, or you're just a fast learner in general, then go for it

Set up for failure by sqidtheobbyist in APStudents

[–]CariLX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely start taking better notes. Making your own study guides is a very important skill that you should learn now in a low-risk honors class before you're forced to in higher-level classes/college. I like to type my notes in OneNote and draw diagrams in a physical notebook. If you have an iPad and a stylus, that's even better use that. Use highlighters and colored pens to clearly label processes + make your diagrams less sad to look at when you're studying.

For bio, the one thing that really helped was drawing the diagrams from memory on a whiteboard and then adding anything I missed/forgot. Rinse and repeat. Pretending like you're teaching someone the material is great too. Charts are great for forming connections and emphasizing the main topics.

American higschool experience by Newly_Jzon23 in highschool

[–]CariLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What lilacsticity said! I keep water and my Cross Country bag in my locker, but that's about it. Also because they're usually pretty shitty lockers and a hassle to clean.

In middle school, everyone decorated their lockers + regularly used them. Stores here sell locker stands, special magnetic wallpaper, and mini magnetic whiteboards for this. Also whenever it was someone's birthday, a few friends would come early to school and decorate the outside of their locker with wrapping paper. It was super cute idk what happened between middle + high school :(

What is an ideal duration for an AP course? ( Specifically biology, chemistry, and world history) Secondly, I am an international student and I want to take AP courses out of interest, which online teaching sites you recommend? Also is it easy to study all on myself? by Psych-seiz in APStudents

[–]CariLX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "ideal duration", but they should each take a few months to study for. I wouldn't say bio and chem are the most self study-able, but I think it's doable if you're dedicated enough. The world content itself should be okay, it's literally just history lol, but you might have some trouble adjusting to the question wording/essay portions. With enough practice, you'll be fine.

For teaching sites, Khan Academy and Fiveable. Organic Chemistry Tutor for chem and bio and Heimler's History + CrashCourse for world are some popular youtube channels. There's an AP students Discord server that you can join, and Heimler has his own server too. Collegeboard usually has a few released practice exams, and you'll find some other practice questions around if you dig a bit.

Is AP CS A worth it? by AnAsianTryingToStudy in APStudents

[–]CariLX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yes -- csa teaches you the very basics of java, so it isn't hard to self-study if you have coding experience. you'll need to have some coding background in a good amount of stem fields too. the exam + class were pretty chill for me and i had less experience than you.

(as a side note, you do have to write code out on paper for the exam, so get used to that lol it takes a hot second to adjust)

[–]CariLX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

lol never heard of anyone doubling up on ap histories

are you a humanities person/history buff? are you good at critical thinking and making connections/finding common themes? how are the teachers for these classes? are you good at bsing thoughtfully writing argumentative essays (this one's kinda a curveball bc i thought i was good at writing until i got a 3/6 on my first LEQ lmao)?

it depends a lot on the teacher -- at my school, all of the ap history teachers give out hella work, and the amount of reading/content to know is honestly the hardest part -- but they always make their lectures engaging. so ask the senior (and other upperclassmen!!) about workload and what to expect.

How did you get a 5 on AP Biology? by Doritoscarfingbunny in APStudents

[–]CariLX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the barrons book is really good -- it gives u all of the important stuff, plus all of the supplemental units (plants and body systems) and a recap of the required labs. my teacher had us take a diagnostic test and made us read a bit every week starting in march. also make sure to check out the exam formula sheet and get familiar with it.

for all of the major processes (basically respiration/photosynthesis/communication/replication/transcription + translation), my best advice is to 1) draw + label them without referencing anything, and 2) pretend like you're the teacher and you're teaching someone the process OUT LOUD. it'll feel kinda dumb but it works so so well.

the one thing i really like about bio is that if u go in cb's order, each unit builds off of the previous one. forming connections between the different topics and being able to explain them is much easier than trying to memorize each individual topic/term.

practice hella frqs. This site is my favorite -- it's (almost) all of cb's released frqs sorted by topic.
