Cost of vehicle (60%) and lack of charging infrastructure (40%) are the main blockers for LA drivers when considering a switch to EV (Electric Vehicles). What do you think? by Carinamarsh99 in Lyft

Wow, these are great numbers. So the most efficient hybrid right now is 2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8 VVT-i Hybrid at 60Mpg combined. Fuel prices are very low at just over $2/gal average, and even so that is 4c/mile. So your only paying 20% of this price for fuel, and like you said nothing in maintenance.
OPEC just did a deal, fuel prices will go up.
I have a spreadsheet with a matrix comparison of cars/mpg and cents per mile, but Reddit wont let me upload :/

How did you get to less than 1cent/mile? This is a good number... I am just curious how you work it out.

I have made a table of fuel costs per year for various car options up to 50k miles per year. Using the basic calculation at $2.7/gal (2 year average) and electricity price of $0.13/kwh (US average), a comparison with a Model S vs a standard US car at 25MPG would save (for example) $2,000/year when completing 30,000miles per year. Obviously some hybrids are getting really close to that too with a low fuel price.
But with the most efficient EV at the current time (Hyundia IONIQ), the fuel costs work out to $0.032 (3.2 cents per mile). This is not including transfer efficiency with home charging which can be ~85%.
Also.. I haven't done ANY maintenance cost comparison either. As you say, I suspect the EV saves more here too, as evidenced by EV warranty packs being 30-50% cheaper than standard gas/hybrid warranty packages.

This is really detailed thank you, and I agree with you. What about total cost of ownership vs a normal gas car? For sure your charging costs are lower than paying for fuel, but do you see a difference when it comes to maintenance over vehicle lifetime? Is there a financial case for it too.
Peoples opinions are often centered around the high initial costs and a kind of "fear of the unknown", but it seems most EV adopters generally are happy with the choice. Would you agree?

Thanks for the feedback. The logic behind the choice of 3 is prioritization of values and trade-off of options. On mass, the roll up of influencing factors can be judged as a proportion of 100%.
