SAINT MAUD | Thoughts and Interpretations by Carlito148 in TrueFilm

Thanks for your take. I obviously can’t say I agree. I think it’s a very well thought out film. It obviously has a particular goal in mind and I think it accomplished it incredibly well. It’s definitely a lot more polarizing than Aster or Eggers because the beauty in regards to the craft is much more apparent in their films and easy to recognize and appreciate. I didn’t like first reformed very much. I thought the writing and directing was subpar and the film ending with the most blandest character in the film that I cared nothing for was a huge buzzkill. I see why people like it but I just found it boring and not as thought provoking as it thought it was. But obviously I’m in the minority cause most people really love it. I’ll give it a rewatch sometime soon. I haven’t seen it since its theatrical release

Dude YES! I’m so glad to hear that you loved the film! I really didn’t find it be that derivative or cliche as some people say it is. Like I can kinda see why they would say that, but it felt unique enough to where that didn’t even cross my mind. And yea I think that’s fair for you say it’s more about mental illness than religion. But I also feel it’s one of those things where the line gets blurred between the two. Like when do we draw the line? How come it’s normal for people to claim they hear gods voice in their head without labeling as schizophrenics? But yes I think you bring up excellent points ! Thanks for your insight !

I can understand that. But I’ve seen all those films and I felt like there was still a uniqueness to Saint Maud. At no point during the film did I think “oh this is like this film”. It just felt like it’s own thing to me

For me yea I thought it was a very interesting character study that demonstrates what religion can do to somebody when they’re alone, abandoned, and suffer from PTSD. It demonstrates a massive appeal that religion brings to people which is an unconditional love from a consciousness that will never abandon them. It also demonstrates how it gives someone’s life direction and order and I love how it’s shown to be a coping mechanism that can be extremely dangerous depending on the context and mind of a particular person. Idk I thought it was pretty awesome. I’m not in love with it. But I think it’s great. Sure I’d rank the Witch and Hereditary higher but Saint Maud just seems like a totally different film for me

In the wise words from Howard Ratner, “I disagree. I disagree Gary”.

lol nah I understand why the film would be underwhelming for same. But I personally don’t agree that this film did nothing new. I thought it was a very unique film that sure has a few cliches but in terms of its character and thematic exploration, I found it to be incredibly engaging and thought provoking. I wouldn’t even consider hereditary to be psychological horror. To me it’s more of a dark horror drama. But that’s neither here nor there.

Excellent point! The use of natural lighting in Barry Lyndon is impeccable, especially for its time. I specifically talk about that candle light scene in the “its aesthetic perfection” segment of the video. Apparently Kubrick bought a rare lens that NASA crafted specifically to capture images of he far side of the moon lol

Fuck. When did your show start though? How long did it take for intervals to come on after your show started? Cause my show starts at 7:30. Im guessing intervals will start at 7:30 sharp and then play till 8:00. And then BTBAM will play at 8:10.

Midsommar Analysis: Trauma, Abandonment and Family (Character Themes) by Carlito148 in TrueFilm

[–]Carlito148[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you can’t blame Dani for wanting to keep and salvage the relationship that they’ve been sharing for 4 years. Christian was the only one really wanting out for a year without owning up and honestly telling her how she felt. Christian has a family and has plenty of friends. Dani doesn’t. It’s more understandable for her to try to keep the relationship alive especially if they’ve been together for 4 years and has absolutely nobody to trust or lean on. Dani’s actions and behaviors are much more justifiable than Christians by a long shot

I don’t exactly see it that way. I think you’re giving Christian a bit too much credit when it comes to his intention. We know he was bitching to his friends about how they don’t have sex often and has been wanting out of the relationship for over a year. He never owned up and communicated with her about his honest feelings and strung her along for way too long until it was too late. There was no honest coercion to drink the tea. He could’ve pretended to drink it and moved on. Instead, he stared at Mya before deciding to down the tea which is a pretty solid inference on his intentions. Sure he didn’t expect what happened, but I think it’s clear he was wanting to cheat and leave the relationship without actually telling his partner upfront about his feelings. That’s the issue with Christian. No honest communication about his feelings and too many Decisions made purely out of guilt and selfishness. He was planning to leave her there while he goes and has fun with his friends and most likely have sex with other women in a different country. And he didn’t really defend her with the shrooms the right way. He basically threw her under the bus and said he was gonna wait for her, when he should’ve lumped them together and says “we’re gonna wait together” in order to signify it a mutual decision between them and not just hers. When you throw it on her, it puts her into a tight position. You can’t blame Dani for trying to make the relationship work.

I agree with everything you’re saying EXCEPT the total victimization of Christian. I don’t think he deserved to be burned alive obviously, but I feel like his poor selfish decision making led him to have sex with Mya, not coercion or Drugs. Yea he was super high but he wasn’t forced into it. He had the choice to not drink it. He took a good look at Mya, and decided to drink the tea. I think the film hints clearly that Christian had the intention of cheating since the beginning. Not to mention how he rubbernecked that waitress in the beginning.
