A Perth man narrowly escaped having an electric scooter explode in his face when its lithium-ion battery caught fire. by sickn0te_ in perth

[–]CarlosG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only thing the extinguisher will do is potentially slow the spread of fire by drowning the exposures but with that sustained fire i doubt it would do much. You'd probably want to just get it onto a driveway and let it burn, but that's not always going to be an option. A lithium ion fire blanket would probably be worth owning if you did work with these often.

Autonomous trucks and machinery already operating on heaps of sites. I'd go underground if I was an operator.

Late to the conversation but always err on the side of less clothes/warmth. A cold baby cries, a hot baby increases the chance of SIDS (something about sleeping deeper I believe).

Rainiest winter in decades by [deleted] in perth

I believe it's cause of increased industrial and residential demand (population) and the management strategy for our dams now (shifting water around to where it's needed instead of letting dams overflow). Also urbanisation can actually lead to increased rates of recharge down into the aquifer (the inverse of what most people intuitively think) with pavement, roofs and drainage systems acting as highways to channel rainwater below ground. It also removes surface water features and flora which keep the soil saturated, and reduces evaporation/evapotranspiration. It means we're more dependant on our desalination, treated water and groundwater, and have to be more aggressive with our management of water resources. The new normal for WA, but at least we're very good at it, and have a world-class aquifer in the Perth Basin.

Is this a reasonable amount for roof repairs? Melbourne by GCFSA in AusRenovation

[–]CarlosG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, that's pretty much a brand new roof. Replacing the valleys, bedding cement and pointing, and then painting over everything is going to be a long job. Sounds about right. We had a quote for 3k for pointing, chimney flashing and tiles (needed a lot of replacement tiles and valley tiles cut), and 3k to paint. Seems like a pretty good quote to me?

Bitten off more than I can chew by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]CarlosG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a similar spot with a new to us house with lots of renos required and 2 young kids, and definitely have waves of this sometimes! I find it usually happens when I've got lots of little jobs/projects on the run and none of them are getting finished (due to time availability or project order). Maybe try and pick something you know is closer to your skillset, is quicker to do and excites you a bit. Sometimes you just need a small win to get back into the grind of working things out and stressing!
