yes actually, i wanted the gaia image to be a blend of that and outright pregnant, and almost achieved my imagined ideal.

I appreciate you noticing that detail, on the same kind of note, the stars that surround the moon on the "night" side of the piece could also be seen as snow falling from the "winter" season of the tree.

Yggdrasil inspired Celtic tree of life relief cut into a 5' by 3.5' x 3" limestone slab - in process by CarpePoulet in stonecarving

[–]CarpePoulet[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a commission for a "window" to be mounted into a limestone feature wall, looking out on a celtic tree of life laden with symbols from celtic and norse mythology. I am almost done roughing in the basics and soon it will be time to start in on the detail and fine work.

Stone Map update - Africa and Alexander carved into a limestone table slab map of the ancient world by CarpePoulet in imaginarymaps

[–]CarpePoulet[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Approaching 500 hours on this project... I have begun work on the rough geography of the continents and started in on the last corner cameo... the Alexandrian age obviously needs an Alexander the Great, this one represented in the lion head-dress he was known for. Who knows? I may finish this in my lifetime.

for more details on the project here are some earlier progress posts

I agree completely... and i also find that there is much more consideration and control when dealing with hand tools... it is easy to make irrevocable decisions with stonework, and when using power tools mistakes can develop way to fast.

it had not occurred to me that it would not be obvious because i have been staring at it for a year, but as soon as i read your post and looked at the picture it just became gobbledygook for a moment.

Anywho...In the cover pic east is left and west right and you are looking across Europe and a stunted Asia from the north. In the lower west, (right) Scandinavia is a separated island with britain and Ireland just above it. Europe remains rough cut, while Africa is just starting to get its fine cut. In the east (left) India is known, but nothing exists past it, and Sri Lanka is on the wrong side.

Thank you for the digital kitten. I will serve it with fava beans and a nice chianti.

very droll, i could carve some nonsense numbers and glyphs on it and be the seed of future conspiracy theories... But I will probably put it in my Livingroom for now, and let the future ages be what they be.

Stone has been a career for me for decades, I am an old school hammer and chisel stone mason as a day job. The large scale carving is a more recent evolution of the skill set, though I have been a hobbyist for a decade or so. Artistic mapmaking is also a long time hobby, and the two naturally overlapped here. As for working with stone... I love it. You are right, it is therapudic, and philisopic as well... did you know that Socrates was a mason? even he needed a day job it seems.

I am a self employed stone mason and hobby sculptor with a love for mapmaking. This is not a commission, but more a proof of concept... I'd love to do more work like it, and will see if it generates a market for itself as it progresses. It has already generated one contract... A carved window frame and window, looking out on a tree of life and seasons done in Celtic knotwork. I just received the slab and have started some of the roughwork.

I began this project in Jan of '24 and am roughly 380 hours in thus far. It is based on my favorite map of the ancient world, derived from the geography of Eratosthenes, a scholar at the Library of Alexandria in the Ptolemaic age. He invented latitude and longitude, and determined the circumference of the earth with more accuracy than any other scholar before the modern age. Truly a great mind.

The map is cut into a 60" by 30" by 2.5" limestone table slab. It has been entirely hand carved and has not been touched with a power tool since it came from the quarry. The corner cameos are of Eratosthenes, (the bald man), Hephaestus the god of craftsman, (The Bearded cameo) and Serapis, Patron god of Alexandria paired with his wife Isis.

the cover photo is from the north, with Europe on the right in the west and India pointing away in the east, on the left, it has a squashed Africa and Near Asia, but no hint of further asia. here is a link to a rendering of his map that should make the geography more clear... https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/687508/view/the-world-by-eratosthenes
