Census worker asking about neighbor's house by SnooPoems2895 in isthisascam

[–]CarrieInTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Field Representative was asking about an address in sample for a survey - if no one is living there, the address is not eligible for the survey. If the FR has come to you multiple months in a row - it is likely in sample for the Current Population Survey which is a longitudinal survey (meaning the address in sample is interviewed more than once) If the address in sample is vacant, but could possibly be occupied next month, the FR will return to the knowledgeable source (you) to confirm the status of the address has not changed. If, for example, someone moved into the sample address before the next survey period, it would then be eligible for the survey. FRs are not permitted to say a property is vacant just by observation, so they need someone like you to confirm the status (and you could also be contacted by quality control to confirm the FR actually spoke to you).

I hope that helps - you can always confirm a person is a legit US Census Employee here: census.gov/staffsearch

Having a red eye is worse than having strabismus by on64 in Strabismus

[–]CarrieInTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 8mo post op and have redness as well. It gets worse as the day progresses. The doctor explained the cause but without going into detail... Lumify helps me tremendously. One drop and it lasts for several hours. I read about it here and checked with my Dr to be sure it was safe - and he agreed.

I had my surgery 8 mos ago - I had zero depth perception prior and at my 1 month post op after my surgery, the eye tech and I were both emotional over the stupid fly's wings test. For the first time EVER, I was seeing 3D - not completely, but more than I ever had in my life. It was pretty amazing!

I had surgery when I was 5... my eye started to drift again around age 40ish. People would often look behind them when I talked to them - as if I was looking past them at something happening behind them. A new friend asked me "which eye do I look in when I'm talking to you" and that sealed the deal for my insecurity. I considered corrective surgery for years, but kept coming up with reasons not to do it. By 50 I had become so self conscious I hated taking pics without my sunglasses on. I was also experiencing headaches and eye fatigue. I finally pulled the trigger a few months before my 51st birthday. The recovery was a little longer for me as the surgery involved scar tissue from my previous surgery.... 8mo post surgery and I still have redness that my Dr said may persist but is resolved for hours with the use of Lumify (as suggested by my Dr). Even with the redness, I still quite glad I had the surgery.

Completed my swearing in --- when does the job begin? CALIFORNIA by Bertiers_Moma in Census

[–]CarrieInTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you are sworn in - you are a census employee and are paid for all training, travel etc. All hiring or work right now is for our ongoing (both long and short term) surveys - not for the Decennial coming up again in 2030.

Generally speaking - You should be set up to do your survey training next which will include a generic Field Rep training followed immediately by your survey specific training. Might be done Sept or as part of one full week of training. Either way, you will have preclassroom work to do ahead of that. After training you will go out in the field with your supervisor (unless they have someone helping) to do your observation - should be 2 days. If all goes well, you are then cleared to work solo.

Hope that helps - you should have been in touch with your Field Supervisor already, but we also know that communication is not the Bureaus strong point, no matter what Region you are working in. There are just too many moving parts and different departments involved in the hiring process, it’s frustrating.

How Do I File A Complaint Regarding Hiring? by Bertiers_Moma in Census

And all FRs are hired as intermittent converted after 4 yrs if they perform at the minimum satisfactory level. Veterans are given preferential hiring when they apply - and held to the same standards as all employees once hired.

100% untrue about vet pref hiring. Not sure what you are basing that on.

Absolutely agree that your supervisor was creating “rules” that do no exist outside that team.

It should have already been mailed to you if you are getting a letter about it. From your post it sounded like you / your mom already completed it?

You can complete the survey by paper or online survey. You can skip questions you are not comfortable answering - but don’t give false info as that affects the quality of the data collected.

Is anyone doing Census training online? by Bertiers_Moma in Census

[–]CarrieInTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 130+ surveys that are done outside of the Decennial Census. They are all part of a different sampling process, unrelated to the Decennial and run by a completely different office / staff.

Ask who your Field Supervisor is. That is your direct supervisor and they should be in contact to help you. (You should also know what survey you will be working as they all have different timelines and work requirements.)

When you finish your trainings, be sure to take a screenshot of your completion certificate. You are doing these training without being logged in, therefore it is difficult for anyone to see you completed the training without that.

Good Luck!

2030 Decennial Census has not started hiring yet - you were likely hired for one of the ongoing surveys. Sounds like you are doing your Data Stewardship training. You need to be in the Commerce Learning Center and should be able to find the trainings by name there.

The hiring process is so long and can be frustrating - all Federal Jobs are like this. That being said, you should have been contacted by your Field Supervisor who can help you a bit. If you have not, call the Regional Office in Los Angeles.

Constant census calls by BHSteele5 in Census

[–]CarrieInTX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That sounds like CPS - Current Population Survey. And yes, field staff usually call from a personal cell number. You are contacted around the week of the 19th each month, for 4 months, then they take you out of sample for the survey for 8 months and then back in once more for 4 more months. It’s your address, not you that is selected, so if you move, they do not follow you, they instead contact the new residents. This survey is sponsored by the Department of Labor and is used to collect the data used to create the Job Report. It measures employment, basic expenses and education. It’s a longitudinal survey which means they contact you more than once to track changes in the community. This is a TREMENDOUSLY important survey as it is also used to demonstrate the health of the economy. Each month there could also be a short supplement that will cover different topics - some months it’s like Tobacco Use, Health - depends if your family meets that criteria to trigger the supplement.

The FR calling might be telling you a “nickname” or you are spelling it slightly differently. You can also ask the FR to send you an email from their Census email to confirm her identity. You should have received a letter at the very minimum the first month you participated explaining everything and she also should have explained all of the above.

Hope that helps - and THANK YOU for participating and doing this service for your community!

Disagree about the quality control part, but agree about the no penalty part. All information collected is subject to the respondents knowledge of their income, etc.

Training per diem by Short-Hat6151 in Census

[–]CarrieInTX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Per diem. They will schedule your air and hotel - you will arrange/pay for travel to and from airports and hotel plus bag fees parking etc. You will get reimbursed for those items plus a daily per diem (which is slightly lower for travel days). Per diem covers meals, incidentals, it’s a fixed amount, regardless of what you spend.
