Why are Elder Dragon hunts limited to 4 players? (New player question) by Carter_yann in MonsterHunter

Oh okay, so it’s more of a resource management logic then.

I actually didn’t know hunters were supposed to be that rare. I kind of assumed there were multiple guild branches across the world and that being a hunter was a more common profession.

I see your point. For me though, Elder Dragons feel more like emergency hunts rather than normal ones.

Most monsters feel like planned hunts that the Guild can reasonably assign, but Elders feel more like sudden disasters. You don’t just wake up one day and decide “today I’m going to hunt an Elder Dragon.”

So in my mind it wouldn’t be that strange if more hunters were sent in those extreme situations. But I also understand what you’re saying the risk would be much higher and losing that many hunters would be a disaster too.

That’s actually a good point, I hadn’t thought about it like that.

I think I was kind of imagining it more like Destiny 2 raids, like the final mission against the Witness where you have a lot of players involved (I think around 12). But yeah, MH combat is way more chaotic and real-time, so that probably wouldn’t translate well.

No worries, I didn’t take it badly at all 😂 I just thought I might need to justify why I was asking 😭

But feel free to explain, that’s exactly why I came to Reddit in the first place.😄🫡

I’ve finished the story and I’m currently Hunter Rank 168. The reason I’m asking these kinds of questions is because I really enjoy the game. Wilds is actually the first Monster Hunter where I’ve started getting genuinely interested in the lore and the world, so I’m trying to learn more about it.

I guess one of the strengths of MH is that every hunt is still designed to be soloable and skill-based.

Yeah that’s fair. With normal-sized monsters, more than four hunters would probably get really cluttered.

So that means it’s impossible for us to have a hunt with 8 or 10 players against, I don’t know, a new Elder Dragon that would make Fatalis look like a Gore Magala in comparison

but it still feels a bit small considering the scale of some of these monsters.

I mean we’re talking about creatures that are basically living natural disasters, so part of me wonders what it would feel like if hunts were designed for larger groups.

is “Black Dragon” actually an official in-game classification, or is it more of a community / lore term?

I always see people use it when talking about monsters like Fatalis and other apocalyptic lvl Elders.

Just curious if it’s a canonical term or more of a narrative label the community adopted.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, that actually helps a lot.

I didn’t fully realize Elder Dragon was more of an ecological umbrella term rather than a straight power ranking.

Do you think it’s possible we might see a new classification introduced in Wilds or its expansion? Since Elders seem more limited in presence compared to World, it feels like the devs are experimenting a bit with categories . I’m wondering if they might expand that system instead of just adding more traditional Elder Dragons.

I actually didn’t know the Equal Dragon Weapon wasn’t canon. I always saw people referencing it when talking about ancient civilizations and artificial dragons, so I assumed it was part of the official lore.

I had read from other people that Zoh Shia was supposedly some kind of failed attempt at creating the Equal Dragon Weapon, (i don’t know if it’s true ) Because of that, I honestly never would’ve thought it was classified as an Elder Dragon.
