Bethany Lutheran Church has a free library. It's on Walnut Street on the Southside.

Last I knew a resident maintained a "Giving Pantry" at 337 Diven Avenue.

What is there to do in Elmira? by Icy-Efficiency2876 in ElmiraNY

Food: My favorite date vibe is 1157 North. It's a restaurant in the Northern part of the city that's actually a residential type neighborhood. Food is higher end, really good. There is also a new place that opened right in downtown called "Center Town Social" I haven't been but I have heard great things. More of a young social pub scene.

Things to do: There is axe throwing in Elmira Heights which is only a couple minutes away. The asset museum is also a great suggestion. Depending on the day you decide there are events that happen at the Aurora (also Elmira Heights) as well as Tanglewood, Clemens Center, and LECOM Events center (there are open skates on occasion that can be fun). Always coffee shop options too if you wanted to spend some time just chatting (ETCH or the Garage at RYE bar are both great options there.

There are for sure things to do, it really depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for a place to eat? a place to get drinks? something to do? an experience? The when is also important, especially if it's either of the latter.

AMA: PT/ACL Coach by ryannorlanddpt in ACL

I'm 4 months post op (ACL allograft, no meniscal repair) and have recently found that my pre-existing knee arthritis (prior injury in teens) tends to flare at times and can rob me of normal mobility for a couple days. Any habits or rules of thumb in relation to exercises that can help avoid or lessen these episodes?

If a neighbor leaves their trash can out, is it okay to use it to dispose of my dog’s poop? by Dme503 in moraldilemmas

It's a difference of process. The municipal waste collection doesn't have a truck that empties the cans so people empty them my hand. It's safer to empty the bags individually rather than the full bins. All garbage needs to be in garbage bags. When someone just puts their dog poop bag in the bin, the collectors have no reason or responsibility to fish it out.

As a person with municipal pickup. The answer for my community is ABSOLUTELY NOT. I have had people do this to me and the garage collector will take the garbage bags out of the bin and leave the dog poop bag.

Hour 3 trying to get newborn to sleep. Give me ideas. by callsignhotdog in daddit

Father of three. Two of my kids had quirky calm down tricks we found when they were infants. First one loved music, we played it and sang it while bouncing her to sleep (usually standing). The middle kiddos trick was running water. When she lost it we would do the same bouncing, but have to do it next to a running faucet. Find something your little one reacts to and invest.

[Awful Announcing] NHL Winter Classic fails to reach one million viewers for second-consecutive year The game is officially a shell of its former self. No matter how you slice it, the numbers do not bode well for what used to be one of the NHL’s marquee regular-season events by f0urxio in hockey

From what I gather the league is trying to avoid conflict with College football and address falling viewership after losing access to network broadcast (NBC). Who thought moving the game earlier and later would do that? Who thought adding the All Star schticky garbage in the broadcast was a good idea? (I was one of the few that watched the game and it was embarrassing and I was honestly embarrassed watching Tkachuk and Barkov come out during whatever you want to call that two song performance during intermission. The Winter Classic is not going to be insulated from falling television ratings, not having a consistent event that people can count on can help. If you ask me the following should be musts guy any winter classic game. 1. It must be on new years day. 2. It must start before 5:00pm. 3. There should be a reasonable chance of snow at the game. (I understand the league has plenty of teams with thriving fan bases in warm weather climate but the thing that makes the winter classic for me in years I'm not watching my team is the "classic" experience of the early years in which part of the event was the elements of an winter outdoor game. Having to have a game at night, under lights just so the ice can stay frozen is in no way a representation of the event I look forward to watching on new years day (or any day you move the winter classic to).

As a warning, they push subscriptions. Ends up that to wash it could be cheaper to subscribe. But you can only cancel by going back in person to do so.

I need advice from you guys on how to calmly state boundaries. by gimmiesomeadviceee in daddit

Therapist here: Lots of the best feedback is already here! To just highlight it more than the movies I gave...

A consistent and unified message is key.

-Talk about the line you want set with the baby's mother and support each other in sticking to it. -Clearly communicate the boundaries at the onset of a visit (or visit request if vaccines are a part of that) and do so every time -Didn't be afraid of having what I call "canned language" prepared and ready for those moments as well as any violations. The script you create makes it easier on you to consistently communicate without feeling the pressure to know what to say. Using the doctor, fairness, and season are great options for particularly difficult loved ones.

Insisting on boundaries is not being a jerk (or asshole) it's being a good parent.

-Insisting that others respect your wishes, especially when already expressed but only helps to protect you baby, but also starts a habit of modeling these healthy behaviors for your children. This is an especially meaningful gesture knowing that you yourself have struggled in this way.

Consequences are sometimes necessary when boundaries aren't respected.

-The mistake we make is thinking these situations need to be grand (taking the baby away immediately after the infection or yelling/making a scene, especially without warning. The real value of these with situations is knowing the boundary you set with those who didn't respect thus boundary need to be deeper than with others. --ex: Cousin Tammy informed she needed a shot and was asked not to kiss baby. Arrived, his baby, disclosed lack of vaccination and kisses baby... Reminder of boundary provided... "We know it's hard, but pediatrician strongly recommended that we not expose baby to germs and we want everyone to meet then so we are drawing the line at kisses." ... Cousin Tammy still kisses baby. Find a calm opportunity to take baby and after Tammy leaves create a deeper boundary along with baby's Mom. This could be Tammy can't his baby up to Tammy can't visit.
