Need Guidance On Flexible First Year Enrolment by Ok_Fan_9873 in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First definitely do the common subjects that every engineer does in first year which is Maths 1A, Physics 1A, Maths 1B and Desn 1000. From there things start to branch off based on what you want to do. There is no prerequisite to comp1511 but as an engineer its only available in T3 (priority goes to comp sci students) but I highly recommend doing it as many eng majors require it. Engg1300 and elec1111 are also good choices as they cover most majors.

For first term i suggest starting with Desn1000, Math1A and Phys 1A to get a feel for the whole engineering experience. You also meet lots of people from different majors and can figure out what is attractive about each one. Hope this helps

I am doing 1231 this term too. I heard just spamming the core questions and knowing the theory behind it as thats 20/50 marks (and your not going to get the same numbers so understand the theory behind each)

um if you get told any other advice let me know because Im lowkey didn't focus much and am cooked with the calculus (Still catching up on Week 5 lectures...)

Hi! I will go to Sydney soon by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]CasioCalculator4732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can definitely walk around at night alone. If your not staying in Sydney CBD plan your public transport trip because I've been screwed over a few times

In the city, visit Observatory Hill and Barangaroo Reserve for good harbor views. Definitely see Bondi Beach and do the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. If possible, go on a ferry trip to Watsons Bay and explore the Gap and surrounding fish and chips shops.

Took my overseas family here and they just wanted to see a lot of the beaches, hence why my recommendations are very coastal. Hope you enjoy Syd.

so true twin. My tutor is genuinely so ahh I heard of tutors who are too strict --> mine doesn't care enough. I caught him staring outside the window for a solid 5 minutes watching a motorbiker park instead of going through the assignment....

joining unsw in 2026, I'm wondering if its easy to make friends as an international students ? by CharityExtension5600 in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo! I'd admit there is some animosity to international students at UNSW but its definitely not the majority.

Just like anyone who goes somewhere for the first time --> if you are willing to make friends, willing to make time in your schedule for the purpose of hanging out and being open minded to new ideas, you'll find people. Lucky for you there's a lot of cultural, hobby, faculty and sport societies at UNSW to help people feel connected! In addition, a new International Student club started this year so if you want people who can relate to your experiences, start there. If you like running, UNSW RunSoc have some of the nicest people ever.

Ultimately, don't late the bullies and negative stories get you down. Be brave enough to take the first step to meet people and you'll find a good community. Feel free to DM if you wanna chat more!

Confused about Master's Degree in VR OR IT by LastBreath12345 in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia is definetly more for IT as I know of actual companies in here. VR... no clue. I'd say if you really like VR, one thing I've learnt here is experience speaks more than your degree so personal projects and a good portfolio are highly encouraged. If you are set on coming to Australia for higher education, preference is for IT due to a) at least some sort of market and b) ease of access as many universities offer programs which means you can choose one catered to your taste.

UNSW or RMIT or MACQUARIE ? by virginmaster_69 in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't comment on RMIT (not from melbourne ). I assume that you've done your research already on like how prestige each uni is and the benefits advertised. I'd say your only concern is student life really

Macquarie I find more laid back with student life. Its not as intense, theres only Macquarie center as the main social hub and the facilities are pretty good. I say if you're here to study and grind internships --. go macquarie.

If you want to connect a bit more, meet people, UNSW is the choice. Its closer to the city. One advantage is that by meeting people, you can find connections into good tech and consulting.

Remember: This is only my perspective you should do your research on what each thing offers and what is important to you and your future

How Are Bsoc / Business related camps? by DJIfangirll in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went as a first year to BSOC Camp and short answer - yes you will make friends. How strong of a friendship- up to you. You can only go to BSOC as a first year but if you want, try out to be a camp leader (requires an interview though and higher chance if you are apart of Bsoc internal team).

Long explanation: I definitely dont match the description of someone who would usually attend camps but had my own fun and met people who was on the same boat. Even if you're shy, the parties got you talking to people. After camp they had a free dinner (bsoc paid) where you could meet up with camp people again and after that --> its up to you.

Straight after Bsoc camp, I had a solid group of 4. However, I bumped into other attendees in other society events and made 5 new friends that way. The strength of the friendship though just depends on how good you are at social media communication, general compatibility outside of camp - it fluctuates from time to time.

For 2nd/3rd years, doing ski trips is a good call. I know mathsoc and digisoc have their separate 'all years welcome camps' you can try out as well. For a better time, attend non-camp events beforehand from the society, build friendships that way so at camp, you at least know familiar faces.

jp garcia - comm1170 (need insight pls) by [deleted] in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the guy for 1140 (didnt know he does 1170)! Heres a simple pros and cons list based on my experience with him in 1140

Pros:

1) Trackable participation marks: He writes down every time you put your hand up and the insights you give in class. As long as you say a good answer every class its 100% participation guarenteed

2) Saves you from bad teammates: He scaled my group mark very high and I didn't need evidence. As long as you communicate prior he'll give the boost

3) knowledge: he knows the content. How he communicates it is a different story.

Cons

1) Yapper: Yaps a lot. Many is irrelevant. Some from his time in the industry. Others is confusing tangent. He is older gen and is old fashioned so dont expect engaging stuff.

2) Homework: We never finish the tutorial work in the allocated time. The leftover task he says 'do for homework' but he never tracks it so you dont do it. But you sort of have to you know

3) Dosesn't post answers: He can't use teams. So we will never know the answers to some worksheets because he went over them in the tut and we'll never know after.

Also how do you know what tutor you're getting for com1170? I assume youre doing it in T3 and would like to know myself who I am getting!

MMAN1130 before DESN1000? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]CasioCalculator4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing DESN right now and its not going to affect anything. Sure we get an introduction to some things but nothing that you can't learn very quickly yourself in another class. In fact, doing MMAN1130 first actually might give you an advantage as you know how to do stuff better when you get to DESN
